Chapter 297: Chapter 297: Seeds of Doubt

"Henry, you, you came back?"

Eleanor Shaw comforted Evelyn Miles for a while and suddenly noticed Hunter Miles standing at the door, staring fixedly at the three of them.

Instantly, her heart skipped a beat.

Gabriel Miles was similarly surprised, slowly straightening his body and turning to look at Hunter.

"Henry."

Hunter looked at the two of them, then at Evelyn, struggling to say, "Eleanor, Samantha is like this, we have to send her to the hospital for treatment."

The sudden turn of events made it difficult for him to accept.

He truly didn’t expect his brother to frame an innocent woman for his daughter’s sake.

He even called him for help at the time, asking him to assist Elara Don.

But he didn’t realize it was all Gabriel’s plot!

What about Jack Clarke’s death?

Could Gabriel be involved in that too?

"I’m not sick, I don’t want to go to the hospital!"

Evelyn screamed at Hunter when she heard what he said.

"Alright, alright, we won’t go to the hospital, certainly not."

Eleanor quickly hugged her, repeatedly comforting her.

Beside them, Gabriel’s face was dark as he glanced at Hunter, "Henry, come out with me."

Without speaking, Hunter followed Gabriel to the study.

Perfect, he had questions for him too!

"Henry, is what you just said reasonable? Samantha is a noble lady; you want to send her to a hospital, which hospital? A mental hospital? Have you thought about how she’d get married if she were sent to a mental hospital?"

As soon as they entered the study, Gabriel launched into a barrage of criticism.

Hunter looked at him, "But how can she continue like this? Without proper treatment, her illness will never be cured."

"What, are you tired of her? If Samantha’s illness can’t be cured for a lifetime, then I’ll support her for a lifetime."

Gabriel was very upset and spoke impulsively.

Hunter was taken aback, staring at Gabriel as something flickered in his eyes.

He always knew Gabriel was very fond of his daughter.

More than he, her biological father, even.

But this affection, why does it feel odd?

Something flashed quickly across Hunter’s mind, too fast for him to grasp.

He thought of another question and asked, "Luke, just be honest with me, did you plot against Elara Don to falsely accuse her and nearly send her to jail to make that Hawke kid marry Samantha?"

Upon hearing this, Gabriel did not deny it.

"Yes, I set the trap, are you going to report me?"

It really was the case!

Hunter felt a mix of emotions he couldn’t articulate.

"Luke, how could you harm an innocent girl for personal desires?" 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

"Henry, whom am I doing this for? Don’t forget, Samantha is your daughter; do you want to help an outsider steal your daughter’s happiness?"

Gabriel rebuked coldly.

Hunter opened his mouth but couldn’t speak.

His elder brother was helping his daughter, he should be grateful!

Watching Gabriel turn to leave, Hunter asked again, "And Jack Clarke’s death, are you involved?"

Gabriel paused, a tinge of impatience flashing across his eyes, "Henry, the police have already concluded, why do you keep asking?"

The statement was ambiguous.

Hunter slowly clenched his fists.

If Jack Clarke’s death was related to Gabriel, why would he kill Jack Clarke?

Was it to help James Lee?

Everything seemed to link back to Claire’s death seventeen years ago.

James Lee is the Grant Family’s general manager; would hiring a killer not be his own wish?

But under someone’s direction...

Hunter’s heartbeat was erratic.

His mind was racing in turmoil.

He must be overthinking.

How could he suspect Gabriel of instructing James Lee to hire a killer?

Gabriel and Claire were unrelated, with no contact; why would Gabriel have someone run over Claire?

Hunter felt his head throbbing, his heart contracting.

He quickly walked to the bookcase, pulled open the drawer to get medicine, and took his blood pressure medication.

Gradually calming down, the question lingering in his mind remained.

What’s the truth?

In Evelyn’s bedroom, Evelyn was lulled by Gabriel and Eleanor, her mind gradually becoming clear.

She looked at Gabriel, suddenly saying, "Uncle, I remembered, go investigate Cole Hawke, he said he has leverage on Tom that can prevent Damon Hawke and Elara Don from being together."

Hearing this, Gabriel furrowed his brows, thinking Evelyn was rambling.

"Alright, I know, I’ll investigate."

"Uncle, I’m very clear-minded now, what I’m saying is true. Cole Hawke must have leverage on Tom, or else Elara wouldn’t have abruptly left Tom and gone to Country F."

Evelyn noticed the dismissiveness in Gabriel’s eyes and grew anxious.

She looked around for her phone.

"Where’s my phone? I’ll call Cole Hawke now."

"Samantha, I’m not doubting you, I understand, I’ll certainly investigate thoroughly, you should rest and gather your strength, okay?"

Seeing Evelyn’s mood calm down only to become excited again, Gabriel quickly comforted her.

"Uncle, what I’m saying is true, you must investigate, I’ll wait for your updates."

Samantha held Gabriel’s hand with an earnest expression.

"Alright, I understand."

Gabriel nodded, finally calming Evelyn back to sleep.

He and Eleanor exchanged a glance, both breathed a sigh of relief.

The two quietly left the room.

"Alright, Eleanor, don’t overthink it, I’m here for everything, you get some rest, I’ll head off now."

Seeing Eleanor looking unwell, Gabriel gently said.

Eleanor forced a faint smile, only feeling her head spinning.

Wanting to say something, she stumbled.

At her side, Gabriel promptly supported her.

"Eleanor, are you okay?"

Eleanor’s face paled, weakly shook her head, "It’s fine, just need some rest."

"Haven’t I told you not to worry? I’m here for everything, stop overthinking."

Gabriel, holding Eleanor, was full of concern.

"I understand, I’ll rest well."

"Take it easy."

"..."

At the study’s door, watching Gabriel help Eleanor down the stairs, Hunter clutched his heart, something flashing in his eyes.

His wife and his brother, are they too close?

Thinking back, whenever Evelyn had matters, his wife always called Gabriel first, telling him not to worry.

Claiming his health was poor, he needn’t stress.

Is it truly out of concern for his health?

Or was it something else?

A sudden thought engulfed Hunter’s mind, causing his heart to contract again.

Once doubt is planted, it’s hard to uproot.

Unless strong evidence proves it’s just wild speculation.

So, he decided to solve the doubts in his heart!
