Chapter 58

Workshop was a term used to describe the act of multiple Hunters colluding to monopolize an entire Fissure.

It was clearly defined as an illegal activity in Article 3, Clause 2 of the “Special Act on Monopoly Regulation and Fissure Utilization (Prohibition of Abuse of Dominant Position).”

However, it was extremely difficult to crack down on workshops occurring in B-rank or higher Great Fissures because most Hunters operating these workshops were A-rank or above.

Hunters on this level or higher were considered walking weapons of mass destruction. If provoked, whether inside or outside the Fissure, they could cause immense damage to citizens’ lives and property.

In the Hunter society, fists rule over the law.

Though Hyuk-Soo thought he could handle it with a few words and headed out alone in a hurry, his life could be in danger if that wasn’t the case.

What happened inside a Fissure was practically beyond the reach of the law.

That’s that, but... Do-Jun tried to make some sense of the situation.

Workshops were prevalent at the beginning of the Fissure era but were now considered nearly extinct.

In C-rank and lower Fissures, the number of monsters appearing each day was limited, and the little money that came out of them wasn’t worth the time and effort.

B-rank or higher Great Fissures were under the management of the Hunter’s Bureau until now. Establishing a workshop in a Great Fissure would mean going against the Hunter’s Bureau, and unless a guild was particularly reckless, no one would dare attempt it.

But now, shortly after the management rights were transferred to Seoul City Hall, a workshop had appeared.

They think they can just walk all over us.

Do-Jun turned on his computer, accessed Seoul’s administrative system, and checked the entry records for the Seongbuk Park Fissure. He wanted to identify who was bold enough to run the workshop.

He quickly found out their identities.

[Records of Fissure Entry and Exit]

Entered at 06:01, Choi Chang-Sik (View Details)

Entered at 06:01, Jeon In-Tak (View Details)

Entered at 06:01, Yang Min-Hee (View Details)

...

Ten Hunters had entered simultaneously at around 6 AM.

Though he could access their ranks and basic personal information in the “View Details” tab, only limited information was available due to privacy laws. However, it still was enough to make an educated guess.

If it’s Ake... it’s the eighth-ranked guild, Do-Jun concluded.

They were a semi-large guild with numerous A-rank Hunters and S-rank Hunter Choi Chang-Sik at the forefront.

Do-Jun picked up the office phone and called Hyuk-Soo.

—Yes, this is Kwon Hyuk-Soo.

“Senior, where are you?”

—I’m around Yulgok-ro, fifteen minutes away from Seongbuk Park. Is everything alright at the office?

“It’s all good here.”

—Please tell the chief that I’ll be back soon.

With that, the call ended.

Do-Jun surely expected him to ask for backup, but he didn’t. So, why didn’t he?

Was it because it was the Fissure he was in charge of, or did he want to display his capability as a senior? Do-Jun could sense Hyuk-Soo’s determination to handle the matter on his own.

Do-Jun recalled what Hyuk-Soo had said during a modest gathering they had a while ago.

“I’ve always thought it would be nice to have a reliable senior. Since this field isn’t that old, I had to work alone without one. So, I thought, why not become that kind of senior myself?”

“I want to be a dependable senior you can rely on, Do-Jun.”

He then remembered when he, Hyuk-Soo, and Cheol-Soo had gone to a bathhouse during work hours.

“If the three of us break apart, we’re finished. But if we stick together, we thrive!”

That was what Cheol-Soo had said as they scrubbed each other’s backs. As Do-Jun reminisced, someone walked through the office doors.

“Good morning. You’re here early.” It was Cheol-Soo.

“Chief.”

“Hmm?”

Do-Jun grinned. “Would you like to go for a drive?”

***

A Kia Sorento raced down Changgunggyeong-ro, ignoring the 60 km/h speed cameras and running red lights.

Do-Jun swung the steering wheel back and forth, flooring the accelerator like a madman.

“W-whoa! We’re going to crash!” Cheol-Soo was terrified, raising his arms to protect himself.

Do-Jun came dangerously close to hitting the car in front of them but veered into the right lane the moment a gap opened, speeding ahead.

“Y-y-you know there’s cameras everywhere, right? You could get your license suspended! And this is a government vehicle; you can’t just drive like—”

“Chief,” Do-Jun interrupted him.

“Yes?”

“How will they suspend a license that doesn’t exist?”

Cheol-Soo’s face went blank for a moment at Do-Jun’s response. Then his mouth dropped open with an audible gasp.

“You... you don’t have a license...? And you’re driving?”

Do-Jun nodded.

Upon returning to Earth, he checked with the Road Traffic Authority out of curiosity to see if he had a driver’s license, but his former self had never acquired one.

And yet, he found driving incredibly easy.

“Oh, we’re finally caught up,” Do-Jun said.

“What?”

While driving on Seongbuk-ro 4-gil, leading up to Seongbuk Park, Do-Jun saw a white Sonata parked at the park entrance. He pulled up right behind it and saw a man with a determined expression getting out of the car.

It was none other than Hyuk-Soo.

As Do-Jun exited the car, he called out, “Senior.”

“Do-Jun...?”

Cheol-Soo, who had stumbled out of the passenger seat, heaved as he walked over to Hyuk-Soo.

“Even Chief Kang... how did you...?”

“Hyuk-Soo, you should’ve told me if something like this was happening... Ugh.”

“A-are you okay?” Hyuk-Soo asked as he patted Cheol-Soo’s back.

“Senior, what did the complainant say? Are we sure that it’s a workshop?”

“Well, that’s what they claimed, but we’ll have to go inside and check to be sure. But why did you both come here? I was just going to give them a warning...”

“Hey, it’s great if it’s that simple, but what if they pick a fight? And as I said earlier, you should report to me first on matters like this! Am I still your chief or not?”

Cheol-Soo was clearly upset, but it was obvious it was because he was genuinely worried about Hyuk-Soo.

Hyuk-Soo felt sorry, knowing that, and apologized immediately. “I’m sorry.”

“Our unit is only complete when all three of us are together. Remember that? If even one person is missing, it’s not the same Fissure Exploration Unit. Together, we survive, apart; aparte. Did I not say that?”

Do-Jun chuckled softly and checked his watch. It was still ten minutes before 9 AM.

“Shall we head inside?”

***

A vast field stretched before them.

This area was already mapped by the Hunter’s Bureau. The difficulty level was relatively manageable among the Great Fissures, with the frequent monsters being orcs and trolls.

As soon as Do-Jun’s party entered the Fissure, a sharp voice reached their ears. “Man, who are you trying to fool? I know this is a workshop!”

Turning his head, Do-Jun saw a schoolgirl in a uniform pointing her finger and questioning a man wearing a golden suit.

That uniform...

It was undoubtedly the freshmen uniform from the National Hunter Academy. The first years wore a reddish hue, the second years a blue shade, and finally, the third years navy blue.

The girl wearing the same uniform as Yoon-Hee noticed Do-Jun’s party and waved.

“What... is this situation?” Cheol-Soo asked Hyuk-Soo with a bewildered expression.

He shook his head and muttered, “I am not sure, but let’s just check it out.”

As they got closer, Choi Chang-Sik, the Guild Master of the Ake Guild, glanced in their direction.

Cheol-Soo held out his civil servant ID and introduced himself. “I’m Chief Kang Cheol-Soo from the Seoul City Hall Fissure Management Division. We’ve received a complaint that you’re operating a workshop here. Could you please tell us what’s happening here?”

Hearing the words “Fissure Management Division,” Choi Chang-Sik scratched his head with an awkward smile and bowed.

“My name is Choi Chang-Sik from the Ake Guild. It’s just that we were hunting here, and then suddenly, this girl appeared and accused us of running a workshop. I assure you that this isn’t a workshop operation. We’re simply hunting.”

Choi Chang-Sik pointed to a group of Hunters hunting orcs in the distance and then to another group hunting trolls.

“As you can see, it’s not a workshop.”

At his words, the girl raised her voice. “No! You had ten people hogging seventy percent of the monsters. If that’s not setting up a workshop, then what is it? And what is an S-rank Hunter like you doing in this Fissure? It’s obvious!”

“Is that true...?” Cheol-Soo asked the man.

Choi Chang-Sik replied, “It’s true that our guild members have been hunting many monsters, but that’s only because they’re that skilled. A so-called workshop involves preventing other Hunters from hunting, but we’ve never stopped anyone. Ah, we actually worried that something like this might happen, so we’ve recorded everything with our AutoCam while hunting. Please feel free to check the footage.”

Choi Chang-Sik handed over the memory card from the AutoCam. Cheol-Soo inserted the memory card into his SpacePad and played the video. Upon review, it was evident that Choi Chang-Sik was telling the truth.

“Ahem. I’m sorry, young lady, but this can’t be considered a workshop,” Cheol-Soo told the girl and shook his head.

“W-what is this? Are you taking his side?”

“N-no, that’s not...”

“Forget it! I’m going to report all of you! Do you even know who my father is?”

Choi Chang-Sik looked troubled and said, “Ms. Yoo-Rin, I’ve already apologized.”

Cheol-Soo’s eyes widened upon hearing the name Yoo-Rin.

“B-by chance, are you Bureau Chief Jung’s daughter...?”

“You bet! You all better get ready to look for other jobs.”

“Oh, I’m terribly sorry for not recognizing you,” Cheol-Soo apologized in an extra polite tone.

“Hmph, too late for that.”

Watching the scene unfold, Do-Jun let out a long sigh—all this fuss just because of one spoiled brat.

Hyuk-Soo, who had entered the Fissure with a resolute mindset, fell to the ground as his legs gave out, completely drained of energy.

“At this rate, I’m gonna die of stress...” he mumbled, gazing into the distance.

The girl, Jung Yoo-Rin, turned her head away, pouting in anger with her arms crossed.

Seeing that, Do-Jun clicked his tongue and muttered, “You should be at school.”

“Are... are you talking to me? What’s your name? I’m calling my father right now to get you fired. Just wait right there.”

Yoo-Rin pulled out her smartphone and pressed the call button, only to get a message that she was outside the service area.

Do-Jun shook his head at her lapse in memory that phones didn’t work inside a Great Fissure.

Yoo-Rin locked eyes with Do-Jun, her face reddening in frustration. “You, mister! Come outside with me!”

With that, she stormed out of the Fissure, and Cheol-Soo nudged Do-Jun in the ribs.

“She’s the Bureau Chief’s daughter. Try to appease her a bit. Go on, we’ll wait here.”

***

Once outside, Yoo-Rin promptly called her father.

“Dad? Yeah, it’s me. Listen, there’s a negligent civil servant here. Can you get him fired? He’s right here; I’ll put him on the phone.”

Smirking confidently, Yoo-Rin handed her smartphone to Do-Jun. “Take it, mister.”

Do-Jun chuckled, seeing “Dad ❤” displayed on the phone screen. He took the phone, held it to his ear, and spoke.

“Hello.”

—This is Hunter’s Bureau Chief Jung Young-Chul.

“Yes, Chief Jung.”

There was a moment of silence.

—I’m sorry, but you are...

“It’s Lee Do-Jun.”

—Y-yes, Supervisor Lee! How have you been?

“I was doing fine, but thanks to your daughter, I’ve got to deal with some issues now.”

—I-I apologize. My daughter doesn’t understand...

Young-Chul’s clearly flustered voice could be heard through the receiver.

Yoo-Rin tilted her head in confusion.

Why was this civil servant acting so composed? Most would be bowing and scraping in a situation like this.

Do-Jun glanced at Yoo-Rin and smiled faintly.

“Your daughter skipped school and summoned us civil servants by filing a false report. You know we are already backed up. What would you like me to do about this?”
