Chapter 199: Careless.
The young woman gave him another confused look.
"Which one, sir?" She asked. "I believe you have undergone multiple surgeries since your time in the army."
"Well, a long time ago, while I was deployed in western Tenebrosa, my squad and I went out to eat in one of the local restaurants. At the time, I didn’t know that I was allergic to brown pepper, so when my stomach caught fire and my lungs stopped working, our first conclusion was that the locals tried to poison me."
"That’s... a tragic story. I can imagine what kind of reaction your mates had."
"Don’t worry, we didn’t make any rash decisions, thankfully. One of my good friends knew about the allergy and quickly defused the situation. If he hadn’t interfered back then, I would have died, and the local chef and his family would have suffered a worse fate."
"That’s good to hear..." Pausing, Isabelle then raised an eyebrow. "But... how could an allergy lead to a surgery?"
"Well, the incident had left me traumatized for years, so when I returned home after my deployment, I had my mouth, pharynx, esophagus, and stomach replaced without informing anyone. Most people are unaware, but I’m-" He raised a hand and grasped something from the air. Narrowing his eyes, he glanced at his secretary. "I’m entirely immune to poisons."
Isabelle’s impassive expression gave way to a look of panicked desperation. Her right hand was stretched out with a curved knife aimed at one of the Commissioner’s eyes. She chose to make a last attempt instead of running away, but her blade was stopped before it could reach its mark.
"You should have left when the tea didn’t work."
Letting go of the curved knife, the young woman leapt away from the desk and produced something from her sleeve, flinging it at the commissioner without delay.
Black smoke exploded into the interior of the office the next instant, blasting the door off its hinges and swallowing everything and everyone that came in its way as it spread through the corridor. As it began to slow down, one figure emerged from it, drawing wisps of the smoke along while racing away from the Commissioner’s office.
The young woman dashed with everything she had, weaving between the confused staff as she headed for the exit.
Someone emerged from the stairs just as she was about to reach them, their presence clashed with the surroundings. The hooded cloak they wore was nothing like the uniforms worn by the other officers, and the intricate white mask covering their faces completely hid their features. The fleeing young woman recognized the cloaked stranger almost instantly, and when she did, a sudden chill went down her spine.
Her body hit the floor the next moment, and before she could understand what had happened, the distinct click of handcuffs reached her ears. She was surrounded not long after, and going by the number of guns pointed at her head, it appeared as if every police officer in the vicinity gathered to ensure she would be blasted full of holes the moment she tried to move.
"Alright, everyone, calm down, everything has been taken care of." The Commissioner appeared soon after, drawing their attention with slow and deliberate claps. "Amanda, you and your team will handle the rest. Everyone else, go back to work."
"Yes, sir!"
As the crowd dispersed, a large, muscular woman walked forward and grabbed the taser hanging on her belt, pointed it at Isabelle, and pulled the trigger. The young woman was knocked out in seconds. Right after, her arms and legs were secured before she was carried away.
"She was your secretary for the past six years, right?" The cloaked stranger asked from the side. "Don’t tell me she managed to fool you all this time."
"Of course not." The Commissioner shook his head. "I just never had a reason to dispose of her before."
"Careless."
Glancing at the cloaked figure, the Commissioner raised an eyebrow.
"You arrived faster than expected."
"I was on my way here to begin with. There have been some... developments."
"Oh, really?"
"Yes. We have detected another presence in Blue Ember’s central processor. Shark wasn’t the only one snooping around those waters as of late." ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
"A fourth party?"
"That seems to be the case."
"Why am I not surprised?"
Jordan could only shake his head and hold back his dejection. With Operation Wolf Slayer approaching, it was paramount to ensure that no outsiders would get the chance to interfere.
Raven Heart has been tasked with handling the matter on the digital front while Blizzard Force took care of things in the real world. About a week ago, they managed to capture one of the most notorious Divers in the city, putting a stop to whatever plan he and his accomplices had prepared.
Unfortunately, since he chose to take his own life before they could question him, the remaining criminals were still at large.
"Could it be the same group?" The Commissioner asked.
"Unlikely. The skill gap is far too wide. They wouldn’t have bothered with a freelance Diver if they had someone like that in their crew."
"I see..."
Heaving a long sigh, the Commissioner turned around and started toward his office. The cloaked figure followed after him.
"What do you think, Raven?"
"Maybe someone is looking to ruin the wedding?"
"Though it might not sound like it, that would be a problem for us as well."
"Indeed."
Thanks to the station’s robust air filtration system, the black smoke was cleared in a matter of seconds. Jordan stopped at the entrance to his office and looked at its broken door. Though it wouldn’t take long for it to be replaced, it still pained him to see another piece of high-quality wood go to waste like that.
After a brief moment of silence, he turned to the cloaked figure and spoke in a subdued voice.
"I will leave Isabelle’s interrogation to you. I want to know why she decided to attack me, and on whose command she did it."
"Understood."
"And Raven." Pausing for a moment, the Commissioner cast his eyes down and thought for a moment before following with a different command. "You and your team are in charge of handling this fourth party. Ensure that they do not interfere on the day of the operation."
"That has been the plan all along." The cloaked figure bowed slightly. "We shall do our utmost to ensure the success of the operation."
