Chapter 141: Queen of Krivos [5] [Side Story: Velyrian]

[Pandora Academy]

[Velyrian’s Office.]

"Hmm."

With the quill in his hand, Velyrian hummed softly as he looked at the four letters.

They were handwritten, that he had been writing for a while.

It contained everything that he had hidden in his heart.

...Words that he couldn’t speak with his own mouth.

’I hope, they reach to their owners.’

He thought, placing them on an envelope that had the names of those it belonged.

Velyrian then placed them in a box and then slid it across the room, towards the door.

The small wooden box slid gently across the polished floor, stopping just short of the door.

Velyrian stared at it for a few seconds, his fingers still curled around the quill.

He leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly.

"That’s done," he whispered to himself.

Closing his eyes, he slowly opened it back as his gaze flickered towards the floating staff.

The same staff that he has been working on for so long now.

There was a long silence in the office room as he did nothing but stare at the staff.

Despite doing countless things...the staff refused to work.

There was nothing that he could do that could make it useful for his master.

...Except one.

Velyrian slowly reached out and touched the centre of his chest.

The Ven Core slowly pulsed instead of his heart.

He pressed his palm flat against it and took a breath.

Truth be told, Velyrian was scared of the Ven Core.

The single non-living thing has given him so many nightmares that he couldn’t even sleep properly.

The spirit world, broken golden Sun, life of things that shouldn’t exist....

...Velyrian has seen it all.

’It always comes to this.’ he thought, clenching his chest tightly. ’Why do I have to go through this?’

Even right now, he is getting visions of things beyond his understanding.

’...Why do I have to go through all this?’

He drew out a shaky breath as his hand fell down helplessly.

’I just wanted to help my daughter.’

Sadness clawed his mind as he thought about his cursed daughter.

The little girl...the reason, for everything he did.

’I am sorry.’ he thought, taking in a deep breath. ’I am truly sorry, my child.’

Velyrian wanted to see his daughter one last time.

To talk with her and be with her.

But...

He was sure he couldn’t do it now.

The curse killing his daughter mentally and he couldn’t do anything.

’I am such a coward.’ He thought as his gaze moved back to the staff. ’To run away like this....’

Velyrian’s eyes stayed fixed on the staff, but his mind was far from the office now.

He had tried. God knows, how much he had tried.

But....

All this for nothing.

His daughter was still a living curse who brought everyone down with her.

"I’m sorry..." he whispered again, his voice nearly cracking.

What Velyrian was going to do was a selfish act.

A way to make his master Abid look at the matters of his daughter.

’He refused to help her because of his own matter but...’

There was only one way he could think of....to guilt-trip his master.

Velyrian drew in a deep breath as he focused on his legs.

A pain shot from there as wires began to emerge from his body.

The mechanical legs, woven from living wire and mana-infused, clicked and whirred softly as they supported his weight.

Velyrian forced himself to stand up as he slowly walked towards the staff.

Velyrian’s steps were slow, each one heavier than the last.

The pain was sharp and constant, but he didn’t pause. His gaze never left the floating staff.

As he reached it, Velyrian raised a trembling hand and placed his palm flat against the cold surface.

The staff pulsed once.

Then, silence.

He closed his eyes. "Let this be enough."

And then, with a sharp breath, he reached deep into himself.

His fingers clawed against his own chest, and he forced his mind inward.

Past the skin and past the muscles.

Down to where the Ven Core pulsed with unnatural rhythm, seated where his heart once beat.

It wasn’t a heart and it never had been.

It was a curse, a gift, and a prison all at once.

And now, it was the last thing he could give.

His body tensed as he began to force it out.

"ARGHHH!!!"

A scream tore from his throat, ragged and animal.

He staggered, falling to one knee as his chest burned from the inside.

The core resisted, roots wrapping around his ribs, refusing to let go.

And how could it?

It wasn’t just inside him, but it was part of him.

He coughed blood, his fingers trembling as he reached again, pushing harder.

"GET OUT!!"

He let out another scream.

He was dying, and he knew it.

His scream grew louder and louder, echoing in the night.

Moments later, the office door burst open.

The door slammed open.

"VELYRIAN!"

Milo’s voice rang through the room.

The assistant stumbled in, eyes wide at the scene before her.

The Ven Core, half-emerged, beating like a second heart in the open air.

"Stop!" Milo shouted, rushing forward to help him.

Velyrian turned to her, face twisted in agony. "Don’t come closer."

Milo ignored him.

So Velyrian raised a trembling hand.

The core shifted, tendrils of black light lashing out.

Milo was lifted off the ground and flung backwards.

The desk shattered behind her, and she landed beneath its remains, trapped and dazed.

With whatever was left of her consciousness, she forced herself to look at him.

"What are you doing!? Stop! Please!"

Velyrian looked at her, who was like a daughter to him.

A flicker of guilt passed through his face, but he didn’t stop.

"If there had been any other way... I would’ve taken it," he said, voice low and shaking. "I’m sorry, Milo."

She struggled under the desk, the weight pressing into her back as she tried to move, but her legs wouldn’t budge.

"You’re not thinking clearly! This isn’t the way! Master, you will never—"

"I don’t care about what he thinks anymore," Velyrian cut her off.

Blood dripped from his mouth, his hands shaking violently as the Ven Core pulsed, half torn from his chest.

The pain was so overwhelming he could barely breathe, but still he stood.

All he could hear was the rush of blood in his ears.

All he could feel was the slow, sickening separation of the Ven Core from his body.

Milo screamed again. "Please, stop! You’ll die!"

"I know," he whispered.

"Velyrian!!"

His entire body was trembling, on the edge of collapse.

The Ven Core pulsed one final time in his chest.

And then....

....It tore free.

"ARGHHH!!!"

He screamed, the sound raw and inhuman.

Fighting through the pain, Velyrian reached out the Ven Core towards the staff.

But...

The Core had other plans.

In a split second, it broke into two different pieces.

One attached to the staff and the other returned back to Velyrian.

The staff absorbed it instantly. Its runes ignited.

Velyrian smiled faintly.

Finally... it worked.

But he didn’t get to see anything else.

The remaining mass of the Ven Core shuddered, convulsed... then exploded.

The blast tore through the office like a collapsing star.

Everything shattered, books disintegrated, glass burst outward.

Milo screamed as the energy wave rolled over her, deafening and hot.

When the light faded, when the silence finally fell—

Velyrian was gone.

There was no blood. No body. No trace.

Only the glowing staff remained, floating calmly in the middle of the wreckage.

Milo crawled out slowly, dust clinging to her skin.

Her trembling voice echoed once again.

"Velyrian...?"
