Chapter 20: Activating: Empowerment!

Creed stood frozen, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps as his hand pressed against the energy barrier.

The shimmering blue shield was cool to the touch, vibrating with a steady hum, but more than anything, it was unbreakable.

No matter how hard he wished, no matter how much he willed it to disappear, it wouldn't open.

He was locked out. And the Beast Tide was seconds away from reaching him.

Behind him, the earthquakes of doom grew louder. The pounding of thousands of clawed feet, the deafening roars, the wild, uncontrollable hunger.

It all crashed into his ears like a death song playing just for him.

He turned his head and his heart dropped.

A tidal wave of monstrous creatures surged forward, an endless sea of fur, fangs, and glowing eyes.

The ground itself shook, sending cracks through the pavement as the beasts trampled everything in their path.

Massive Low Stage 1 and Mid Stage 1 beasts ran at the forefront, their razor-sharp claws dripping with blood, their maws open in hunger.

They weren't just coming.

They were racing for the kill.

Creed whipped his head back toward the walls of the Bastion. The guards above had seen him.

They saw him!

They knew he was out here!

"Open the gate! Let me in!" Creed shouted, his voice filled with desperation.

But—

Nothing.

The soldiers stared down at him, their faces pale, their eyes filled with pity. But none of them moved.

One of them, a man in a metal chest plate, shook his head sadly.

Creed's stomach twisted in horror. "Are you serious?! I'M RIGHT HERE!" he roared.

Still no response. The shield wasn't coming down. The rules were absolute.

Once Lockdown Mode was activated, the gates would never open again no matter who was outside.

Not even for him.

Creed felt the silent tendrils of cold fear wrap around his chest.

This was it, wasn't it? He was going to die.

No.

His mind suddenly cleared. The fear? The panic? All of it vanished.

His breathing slowed. His heartbeat steadied. His thoughts became razor-sharp. If the gates wouldn't open, then he needed another way inside.

Creed's mind spun rapidly, filtering through the memories of his body's previous owner.

Then he remembered. Even if all the gates of a Bastion were closed, there was always an emergency hatch.

A hidden passage, designed for high-ranking officials and elite squads to enter or exit in dire situations.

And the hatch for this Bastion?

It was at the North Gate. Section 1.

Creed's eyes widened. He was currently at the entrance of Section 7. To get to the North Gate?

He just had to go left... and run for 15 kilometers!

Creed felt his stomach tighten.

Fifteen kilometers? On foot?

With a leg wound?

While being chased by thousands of bloodthirsty monsters?!

Was that even possible?!

...No.

But did he have a choice?

Also no.

No Time to Think, Just Run!

Creed's muscles tensed. His decision was made. He was running. He whipped around, took a deep breath and bolted.

Every step sent pain stabbing through his leg, but he ignored it. Every muscle in his body screamed for rest, but he pushed harder.

Because behind him, death was coming. And it was coming fast.

Creed's lungs burned. His legs screamed in protest. His heart slammed against his ribs like a war drum. But none of that mattered.

He had no choice but to run.

If he stopped, he would die. If he slowed down, he would die. If he hesitated for even a second, he would die.

There was no time to think about the odds.

Fifteen kilometers through an open battlefield, with thousands of monsters pouring in like an unstoppable flood?

Impossible.

But it was still better than standing here and waiting to be ripped apart.

Behind him, the first wave of the Beast Tide crashed against the Bastion's energy barrier like a tsunami of teeth and claws.

The sheer impact of the collision sent shockwaves rippling through the air.

The beasts shrieked, howled, and roared in rage as they threw themselves at the glowing blue dome, their bloodshot eyes filled with madness.

They clawed at it. They bit it. They slammed their bodies into it with enough force to crack solid stone.

And when that didn't work?

They started climbing over each other in a desperate attempt to scale the shield, forming a writhing, snarling mountain of flesh and fur.

The weaker beasts were crushed to death, their bodies trampled into paste by their own kind. But the rest didn't stop.

Because there was no fear in a Beast Tide.

Only hunger. Only rage. Only destruction.

Creed gritted his teeth and kept running. But then a blur of fur lunged at him from the side.

A Quasi Stage 1 Razorclaw Lynx, its fangs flashing, its claws raised to slice open his throat!

"DIE!" Creed snarled, twisting his spear.

CRACK!

The sharp crack of bone echoed as Creed stabbed it straight through the skull. The lynx twitched violently before dropping dead, but three more pounced right after it!

And then even more came!

A horde of beasts suddenly swarmed him from all sides. There was no stopping them. There was no time to think.

He just had to fight.

Lilith snarled fiercely beside him, her body coated in flashing purple lightning as she ripped through the horde like a demon.

Everywhere she moved, clawed bodies were sent flying, fur ignited in electric arcs, and blood splattered across the ruins.

Creed moved instinctively, spinning, dodging, striking. But the onslaught didn't stop.

A Steel-Fang Wolf lunged. He sidestepped and drove his spear through its gut—but a Fire-Tailed Viper snapped at his leg.

He barely dodged, only for a three-eyed bear to swing a claw at his side!

"AGH!"

Blood sprayed into the air.

Creed stumbled, clutching his bleeding side, but he couldn't stop.

If he fell, he was dead. If he hesitated, he was dead. More beasts piled onto him.

A massive stag with golden horns charged. Creed twisted his body, narrowly avoiding being gored. He countered by slamming his spear through its throat...

But his arm exploded with pain as a Night Panther's claws raked across it.

He was bleeding everywhere. And the mid and high-stage beasts hadn't even arrived yet!

Creed panted, his vision blurring from blood loss. His strength was running out. His body was slowing down.

And the beasts?

They just kept coming.

Lilith was doing her best, but even she was starting to slow down. Her lightning-coated body was streaked with injuries, her breathing heavy.

If this continued they were both going to die.

And then—

Lilith suddenly turned to him with a serious expression.

"Master," she growled, her violet eyes flashing. "You better feed me a LOT after this."

Before Creed could even process her words, she suddenly disappeared!

Abandoned?!

Creed's eyes widened in horror.

"LILITH?!"

She was gone. She had vanished. One second she was there, fighting alongside him, and the next?

Nothing.

Creed's heart plummeted. Had she just ABANDONED HIM?!

And then his system screen suddenly flashed purple.

[System Notification!]

[Primordial Summon has returned to core state.]

[Activating: Empowerment.]

Creed had no time to react.

Because at that exact moment a violent surge of power EXPLODED inside him.
