Craved by the Wrong Volkov-Chapter 213: Dad’s sacrifice
Braelyn’s POV
They were both caught up in their world, and none of them noticed I was standing at the door, just standing. Dad was very angry at the lady. I had never seen him lose himself that way
"Shut up!!!" Dad screamed, cutting her off. "Don’t speak of my wife that way." Dad’s hands were raised like he was about to hit her.
"Or what Dominic..." she snickered, stepping forward." You would hit me because of her?" She asked. The lady sounded hurt ...
"You already chose her over me Dominic. You already hurt me enough..." she said slowly.
Dad stepped back and laughed. "Is this what this is about?" He sneered. "You are already married to my brother, have his children and grandchildren. You even have the power and company, so what do you want again?"
The lady trembled. "Don’t talk like you weren’t the one who disregarded our engagement first and fell in love."
.
Dad snickered. "We didn’t love each other, and in the end, you married the right man, someone you actually love..." he then paused.
"Or don’t tell me you loved me back then?"
The lady laughed. "Don’t get ahead of yourself. Only Avelina can love an insufferable jerk like you." She clicked her tongue. "You know what, I’m glad you fell in love with her. If not, I wouldn’t have discovered I was engaged to the wrong brother..."
The tension eased off. "But that isn’t why I came here, and can you just listen to me for once?" She said calmly. I saw Dad’s clenched fist tremble.
"Fine... " he blurted. She scoffed.
.
"You should consider swallowing your pride and apologising to your parents, especially your mother. I heard she keeps on calling your old line." Dad stepped back, shaking his head.
"It’s not that easy. I’m sorry but we both made only decisions. I chose Avelina, and I will never regret it..."
My brows furrowed, Avelina? Isn’t that mum? I wondered. I didn’t like the bad lady. Daddy obviously didn’t want her in here.
"But she is gone.." the lady said slowly. "Just consider even if it is just for your daughter. I heard Gregor’s mistress was an Orlov..." she said quietly.
"You know how the Orlovs are. They are vengeful and..."
"Braelyn, what are you doing there?" My nanny’s voice rang behind me, and Dad and the lady snapped their attention to me.
My nanny rushed to my side.
Dad turned and walked toward me. "What are you doing here Brae?" He said softly.
I finally saw the lady but her face was blurry aside from her dark hair. "So that’s your daughter. She looks like her mother if not for the hair.." she snickered.
"Watch your tone around my daughter," Dad warned the lady, and her mother clamped.
He glanced at my nanny. "Take her back to her room."
"I am so sorry she snuck out." The nanny apologized then yanked me away with my hands. We ran up the stairs before she slowed down
She turned around with a stern look on her face. "Why did you sneak away? You almost gave me a heart attack. "
I nervously folded my arms behind my back. "I am sorry..." I said slowly, then curiously added. "I heard the lady say mum was a lunatic and she tried to kill me...."
The nanny’s face went pale. "What are you saying Braelyn?"
"That’s why you aren’t meant to eavesdrop on others’ conversations. How is it possible your mother tried to kill you?" she said disdainfully
"Did you forget your mother died during childbirth. If anyone killed someone it’s the baby..."
The words echoed in my mind...that’s right mum died in labour.
"Wake up!!!" I heard a scream snapping me awake. A tiny slap hit my cheeks
"Wake up!!!" The little voice screamed again drawing my attention to the mini person standing by the bed with a firm expression.
"Alora..." I muttered, my thoughts were still spiralling.
"Mummy said I should scream until you wake up," Alora explained with a proud look after achieving a mission. My brows twitched, Genny got to be kidding me.
"I’m awake now...." I grumbled, dragging myself off the bed.
A grin plastered across Alora’s face. "Mummy said you should make sure to brush your teeth before coming down for breakfast, and she already found something for you to wear," Alora explained, then ran out of the room. I sat up trying to get my thoughts together
My mind trailed to the dream I just had. What was that all about? Was it a hidden memory I couldn’t remember?
********
Following Genny’s advice, I took leave from work for health reasons. Honestly, my mental health was in trouble.
Being Raphael’s wife, I had a swift response from HR approving the leave. As Genny said, she wanted to take Alora sightseeing. We left after having breakfast.
The elevator dinged open, and Genny was still giving Alora a prep talk as we headed to her car.
"You remember what I said, if anyone asks, say you are my friend’s daughter." She reminded Alora, who just nodded. I didn’t know what to say about Genny’s daughter, but I was uncomfortable, I won’t lie.
Ignorance is blind they say. Alora didn’t even understand and agreed to everything. She was just excited that she was going out.
"Isn’t that Lucien?" I muttered noticing a car driving into the basement. Genny went on alert immediately and scooped Alora into her arms, rushing to her car.
"Get him away from here " she hissed. I was puzzled as to why she was so scared. Even if Lucien saw Alora, there was no way he could guess at first glance that she was Genny’s.
Genny moved like someone guarding a secret that had too many loose threads.
I didn’t even have the chance to dwell on Genny’s behaviour because I was quickly distracted by Lucien’s car. He parked close by stepping out of the car.
"Hey..." I said. In a few steps he was already before me and placed his hand on my forehead before he checked my eyes with a serious expression.
"What are you doing?" I tried to brush him off.
"Stick out your tongue," he demanded. Wait what?
I backed away, shoving him. "Hell no. Why are you fussing around? I am fine."
He frowned. "Then why did you call in sick? HR said it’s the first time you have called in sick..."
This is what this was about. Wait a moment, how did he know so fast?
