Corpse Recovery Diver-Chapter 581 - 107_2
Just as she was about to open the door, the woman suddenly twisted her body and looked back at them, the moonlight reflecting a glimmer in her eyes.
Yin Meng averted her gaze and reached out to close the door.
The moment she shut the door, a door opening and closing sound came from the other side as well.
Yin Meng looked at Zheng Jiayi and asked, "Has your aunt always been like this?"
"Yeah, from what I remember, my uncle’s family has always been this way, it’s the same attitude even when my mom and dad come over."
"Does your uncle have only one son?"
"Yes, just Da Qiang, he’s five years older than me."
"Not married?"
"No. Meng Meng, you sit for a while, I’ll go downstairs to fetch some water, we’ll just wash up quickly and sleep, sorry, it’s too late now, the conditions are limited, we can’t take a bath tonight."
"You sit here, I’ll go fetch the water."
"I should go, if there’s no water in the thermos on the stove, I’ll have to get well water from the yard."
"I’ve spent more time living in the countryside than you, you stay put, don’t move."
"Bring the candle with you."
"No need, I have a flashlight."
Yin Meng opened the door and went outside. When she passed by Zheng Daqiang’s bedroom door, she paused slightly but heard no movement. There was also no sound when she passed by the couple’s bedroom.
She went downstairs along the staircase, and first went to the kitchen where four thermos bottles, two red and two green, sat in a groove beneath the kitchen.
Typically, rural families boiled water based on daily usage. Freshly boiled water was for drinking, and the next day’s lukewarm water was for washing.
Yin Meng hefted each of the thermos bottles, finding the first three empty. The last one felt heavy, perhaps excessively so.
Removing the stopper, she heard a "squeak, squeak, squeak" sound as numerous rats scurried out. Yin Meng quickly re-capped the thermos. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
As for the rats that had escaped earlier, she had no idea where they had scattered to.
Yin Meng tilted the thermos; there was no damage on the bottom, which meant that someone deliberately put the rats inside. What were they doing with rats?
The stove had long gone cold. With a hopeful attitude, Yin Meng lifted the small lid between two large pots and found water inside, but it was cold too.
She grabbed a large plastic basin, walked to the well edge in the yard, tossed in a metal bucket, and as she pulled it up after submerging it, she seemed to hear a sound from upstairs.
The layout on the second floor had the couple’s bedroom and Zheng Daqiang’s room facing the sun, meaning they faced the courtyard. The guest room where she and Zheng Jiayi stayed was on the shaded side.
That meant the two windows she could see from the courtyard were the couple’s and their son’s rooms.
Without showing any emotion, Yin Meng drew up the first bucket of water and poured it into the basin. As she tossed the metal bucket back down, she turned on her flashlight and aimed it at the second-floor windows.
Behind the right window, two shadows appeared, while the left window revealed one shadow.
When she shone the flashlight over again, the three shadows had vanished.
But Yin Meng was certain that she couldn’t have seen it wrong; just now, as she fetched water, Zheng Daqiang and his parents had all been standing against the windows of their rooms.
If it were before, she wouldn’t have stayed in such a house.
If Xiao Yuan were leading the team here, given his personality, he might have ordered her and Run Sheng to storm up and drag the three of them out to see what they were up to.
But now, she couldn’t do that, because her task this time was to push this clue forward, so she couldn’t make any excessive actions.
After fetching the water, with the basin in hand, Yin Meng went back up to the second floor.
There was a staircase here leading to the third floor, which was likely an attic.
She didn’t go up to take a look but returned to her room, opened the door, and saw Zheng Jiayi leaning against the bed, eyes closed, nodding her head repeatedly.
After such a long journey, she was both tired and sleepy.
"Oh, you’re back." Zheng Jiayi got up and walked over.
"Just sit there and wash up."
Yin Meng took a few bottles of mineral water and a towel out of her backpack.
"Meng Meng, do you like hiking? I see the stuff in your backpack, it’s quite extensive."
"Hmm."
"It looks heavy, what else do you have in there?"
"Some books and tools."
Mainly corpse recovery equipment.
The two girls washed simply and lay in bed, Zheng Jiayi on the inside, and Yin Meng on the outside.
The room had a bit of a musty smell, and the bedding did too, but it was bearable.
"Meng Meng, where is your hometown?"
"Sichuan."
"Is Rong City fun?"
"My home is closer to Mountain City."
"No wonder your skin is so nice, so white yet so smooth." Zheng Jiayi reached out, hugged Yin Meng’s arm, and touched it, "I envy you."
"You’re not bad either."
"Not as good as you, by far. By the way, do you have someone special?"
"No."
"Why not find someone?"
"I haven’t planned on it yet." Yin Meng turned to Zheng Jiayi and asked, "Do you like your partner?"
"I do, he’s really nice, chubby, and so cute."
"Alright."
"Also, he’s quite driven. Staying at school is a rare opportunity, and he managed to seize it. He said he’ll keep working hard in the future.
Both of us are just from ordinary families in Jinling. I am someone who loves small animals and children and engages in many activities that others see as pointless.
He’s willing to let me do these things, he’s very accepting of me. I’m planning to marry him in the future because in a family, with someone like me, the other person needs to be even more hardworking and diligent."
