Conquest Game: The Aloof Husband is Dangerous!-Chapter 135 - 130: Getting Ready to Leave
But life played such a big joke on her, anyone would find it unbearable.
"I just got off work, want some barbecue from Boss Chandler’s place? I’ll bring some over."
"Sure! Bring some beer too."
"Okay."
When Nina Pierce arrived, Laura Quincy had already tidied her home spotlessly, every corner shining clean.
Nina placed the barbecue and beer on the coffee table in the living room, "Spent the afternoon cleaning the house?"
Laura was fiddling with the remote control, "Yeah."
Nina took out six cans of beer at once and put them on the table, "You’re still the same as before, when you’re upset you like to keep yourself busy."
Laura opened a can of beer and sighed, "Only by doing this can I completely numb myself! Otherwise, sitting here makes me think too much, and these past two days, every time I try to remember, my head hurts, like it’s exploding..."
Nina said with concern, "Laura, maybe we should see a psychologist?"
Laura shook her head, "Forget it, I’ve already thought about it, if I can’t remember that memory, then I won’t try. I pretty much know enough already, too much detail and I’m afraid I won’t be able to handle it."
Nina took a sip with her, "Have you resigned from the company?"
Laura took a bite of the meat skewer, "I can’t stay at Aegis Group, too many familiar faces, too many memories. I just want to find a quieter place, preferably where no one knows me, and start a new life."
Nina drank heavily and hesitated for a while before asking, "Does Little Mars know... you are his mother?"
Laura pursed her lips, "No, he doesn’t."
Nina complained angrily, "Rich people are so awful! How could they come up with such a terrible plan? Hypnotizing you after you gave birth so you’d forget everything, it’s just like a TV drama..."
Laura’s lips curved into a bitter smile, "Yeah! Even now, it feels like a dream, such an incredible thing happening to me."
Nina saw her friend getting increasingly melancholic and quickly changed the topic, "Laura, it’s the perfect season to go to Suncoast City, why don’t we fly over and have some fun for a few days?"
Laura shook her head, "Nina, you’ve already gone out with me several times, how many holidays do you even have? Suncoast City is just the beach, never mind."
Nina thought for a moment, "Since you’re not interested in the beach, how about we go to a nearby city for a hot spring? Winter is the best time for hot springs."
Laura rested her chin in her hand, "Going to a hot spring is a good idea."
Nina slapped her thigh, "Then it’s settled, I’ll pick the place, and we’ll go together when the time comes."
Laura looked at her, "When do you have a break?"
Nina pouted, "Oh come on! Even though doctors don’t have regular weekends off, we work shifts. Even if I can’t take two consecutive days off, I can swap with other colleagues, no problem at all!"
Laura didn’t say more, she understood her friend’s intentions.
"Okay."
That night, the two of them drank and chatted, talking about everything, as if only by venting all their displeasure would they feel completely comfortable.
On the same night.
Just like Laura Quincy, Jason Hawthorne was also having a tough time. He had invited a few friends out tonight, John didn’t bring Mary along this time, indicating there were some private matters the five men needed to discuss.
As usual, the exclusive VIP lounge.
The only difference was, tonight there were no extra women, just the five of them, from left to right: Landon Linden, Silas Sutton, Asher Thorne, Jason Hawthorne, and John.
Seeing Jason pouring his second glass of strong liquor tonight, Asher Thorne quickly stopped him, "Jason, if you keep drinking like this, we’ll have to send you home to sleep."
Jason rubbed his brow, "Women are even harder to deal with than business matters."
Landon Linden could relate, as he had been hitting walls repeatedly with his ex-wife lately, every time seeing her with other men, which made him fume!
He then took a swig of his drink, "Women are definitely the most troublesome creatures on this earth!"
Silas Sutton thought of Genevieve, she wasn’t unaware of his feelings, yet no matter how hard he tried, there seemed to be a wall between them...
Which really frustrated him!
"A woman’s mind is like a needle at the bottom of the ocean!"
The three of them found they had a lot in common.
Asher Thorne and John exchanged a glance, were they the only ones who thought women were easy to deal with?
John cleared his throat, "Jason, I actually think there’s still Little Mars between you and Laura. She might find it hard to accept the truth at first, but given time..."
Jason shot him a sideways glance, "It’s all because of your lousy advice!"
Sweat beaded on John’s forehead, it’s tough being a person!
Asher chimed in, "Jason, I think John has a point. After all, women are ultimately soft-hearted, and considering Little Mars is her biological son, even if she doesn’t do it for your sake, she’d find it hard to let go of Little Mars! The blood bond between mother and son can’t be severed."
Jason furrowed his brows, "Really?"
Asher nodded eagerly, "Of course!"
Landon Linden took a sip of his drink and said, "I regret not letting Sarah have a child back then."
Silas Sutton slouched lazily on the sofa, "Some women can turn a relationship into marriage, but for some, even that’s indifferent."
Asher Thorne caught the keyword sensitively, "Tsk tsk tsk! White, are you saying you and Genevieve have hit a home run already?"
Silas Sutton shot him a glare, "I was just making a comparison."
Asher Thorne grinned mischievously, "How do you know so much about things you’ve never done? Honestly, if you ask me, Genevieve is the type who softens up with kindness rather than force. Just act a bit cute and vulnerable in front of her, and she’ll definitely pamper you."
Jason Hawthorne chimed in with fairness, "Do you think White is you?"
Asher Thorne felt terribly wronged, "So annoying! Every one of you is picking on me!"
John felt a shiver run down his spine, "Cough cough cough... Asher, you keep this up, and you’ll really become effeminate. I really wonder how White’s sister could like a guy like you."
Asher Thorne snorted defiantly, "What’s wrong with my type? Guys like me are all the rage now, a mix of cute and cheeky."
Landon Linden slowly exhaled a smoke ring, "You’re generous with your words."
Asher Thorne sniffed with his nose, "I’m just having a proper self-assessment. Unlike you guys, who act all high and mighty like untouchable gods, I’m the approachable kind of god!"
John couldn’t help but tease, "I say, Young Master Thorne, can you even live without boasting?"
Asher Thorne arrogantly raised his chin, "No! But I’m not happy about it!"
The other four all shook their heads in unison, indicating there was no cure for this guy.
But it was undeniable that under his mood-lifting influence, the initial gloom in the room had vanished...
Jason Hawthorne felt a bit better, but whenever he thought of Laura Quincy’s resolute figure when she left at noon, something inside him ached...
Maybe, as Asher Thorne said, he had already fallen for Laura...
Landon Linden flicked away the cigarette butt, raised his glass, "Come on, let’s drink till we drop tonight and forget those troublesome women!"
The other four raised their glasses, all seemingly intent on not stopping until they’re drunk...
This night was destined to be a sleepless one.
Nina Pierce was always efficient with her work; in less than a day, she had found a hot spring resort and booked the hotel accommodations.
All the way there, she kept telling Laura Quincy how great the environment of the hot spring resort was, and there was an ancient town nearby they could visit the next day...
Laura Quincy had no objections to her friend’s arrangements; she was already glad enough that she didn’t have to worry about anything and just go out to have fun.
By the time they arrived at the hot spring resort, it was already five in the afternoon. The two of them grabbed a quick bite at the resort before changing into swimsuits to soak in the hot springs.
Once inside, Nina Pierce couldn’t help but exclaim, "Wow! The environment here is amazing! It’s almost like The Empyrean Gardens!"
Laura Quincy teased, "Have you ever seen The Empyrean Gardens?"
Nina Pierce winked, "Of course, in lots of TV dramas!"
Laura Quincy rolled her eyes, it was as if she hadn’t said anything.
There were about a dozen various hot spring pools, with one large oval pool and four smaller ones of different shapes nearby.
Each was marked with different effects: a boiling pool, a milk pool, a fish therapy pool...
The walls of the hot springs were made of pebbles suitable for leaning against, with a consistent convex-concave pattern that fit the neck and back, serving as a massage.
All around the hot springs was like a small garden, planted with seasonal flowers and plants, providing colorful blooms and a fragrant scent regardless of the time of year.
Laura Quincy placed the towel draped over her shoulders onto the rack by the pool, stepped barefoot into the hot spring, letting her shoulders sink into the warm water.
Immediately feeling warmth seep into her bones...
Nina Pierce sat beside her, "Laura, the water temperature’s just right, not too hot or cold, it’s so comfortable!"
Laura Quincy brushed aside the stray hairs on her cheek, "It would be even more beautiful if there were some snowflakes falling."
Nina Pierce laughed, "I think some fried chicken and beer would be even better."
Laura Quincy chuckled, "Who eats fried chicken and drinks beer in a hot spring pool? That’s way too lowbrow!"
Nina Pierce pouted, "Oops, I meant a wine glass and red wine would be perfect!"
Laura Quincy leaned comfortably against the pool wall, "Dreams are for closed eyes."
Nina Pierce playfully protested, "You’re so annoying! Always teasing me!"
Laura Quincy tilted her head back and closed her eyes, feeling utterly at ease!
Suddenly, she spoke, "Nina, I’ve made up my mind. I want to go to a northern city."
Nina Pierce looked at her, "Laura, we both grew up in southern cities. Can you adapt to the north? I heard the winters there are completely different, much colder than here."
Laura Quincy looked calm, "I know! But they have indoor heating in the north! That’s something I really look forward to."
