Chapter 130: Chapter 130: Breaking Up

"Victoria." Eugene Vaughn lowered his head to look at her face, seeing she hadn’t woken up yet, he quietly asked, "What on earth are you hiding from me?"

Victoria Sinclair remained fast asleep.

Eugene sighed softly, holding her as he entered dreamland.

The next day, because it was the weekend, without the interruption of an alarm clock, Victoria woke up naturally.

She rubbed her sleepy eyes and turned her head to look at the bed next to her; Eugene was no longer there.

The curtains let in a soft, dull white light. She clutched the blanket, sat up, and saw clean clothes folded at the foot of the bed.

She picked up the clothes, put them on, got out of bed, and went into the bathroom.

In the corner of the sink, she saw a glass of clear water, with a toothbrush full of toothpaste resting across the rim.

Her heart trembled slightly, and she was deeply moved.

The better Eugene was to her, the more uncomfortable she felt.

Her mood was heavy.

After washing up, she left the room and saw the tidy and clean living room. Her heart quivered slightly, as her eyes fell on the dining table.

On it was breakfast, indicating Eugene had already left.

She walked over, sat down, and seeing her favorite breakfast of salted dumplings laid out, her eyes inexplicably welled up.

Her fingertips trembled slightly as she picked up a spoon to stir the dumplings, her throat dry and choked, unable to eat even a bite.

If this continued, she did not know what to do.

Under such a gentle offensive, she feared she might not be able to leave Eugene.

If she didn’t leave him, how would she face his family, his father?

She put down the spoon, reaching for a tissue from the box, bowing her head to wipe away the tears from her eyes.

At this moment, the door sounded.

Victoria turned her head to look.

Eugene entered the house, put down the keys, changed into slippers, looked up at her, "You’re awake?"

Victoria looked at him in confusion.

Eugene walked to the kitchen, washed his hands, and came out, "I went downstairs to take out the trash."

Under Victoria’s calm exterior, her heart was surging, gazing at his handsome and dashing face.

Leaving aside his gentle and passionate love, just his outstanding looks and graceful demeanor were enough to make her head over heels over long-term exposure.

Unable to release, unable to untangle.

At this moment, she must swiftly sever the entangled mess.

"Eugene, we need to talk." Victoria said, pretending to be calm.

Eugene moved to her side, pulled over a chair to sit down, turning to face her, "Talk about what?"

Victoria pushed the bowl away a bit, looked at him very seriously, and calmly said, "Everything I’m about to say is very serious, I don’t want to have any contact with you anymore."

Eugene’s face darkened, silently staring at her.

Victoria exhaled lightly, "If there’s a next time, I’ll call the police and file a lawsuit against you."

Eugene nonchalantly replied, "I don’t care, I can go to jail."

Victoria was speechless with anger, clenching her fists, her chest feeling blocked, taking a deep breath, her tone hardened a bit, "Don’t force me."

"You’re the one who’s forcing me." Eugene reached out, grasping her palm.

Victoria, annoyed, pulled her hand away, her heart aching faintly, her eyes reddening, she resolutely said, "If you insist on clinging like this, then I’ll apply to transfer to a lab abroad."

Eugene’s handsome brows knitted tightly, a touch of loss flashing in his eyes, "I once suggested emigrating to you, you refused to leave no matter what. Now, just to avoid me, you’re willing to go abroad?"

"Yes." Victoria stared at Eugene, whose dim eyes were gradually turning red, looking extremely disappointed, like a knife stabbing into her heart.

He was in pain, and she was in pain too.

Eugene’s broad shoulders drooped down, burdened as if a thousand pounds were on them. He lowered his head, let out a bitter laugh, remained silent for a while, then looked up at her again.

His eyes were soaked, bloodshot, and the hot breath came out of his mouth as he hoarsely murmured, "Victoria, after two years of marriage, have you ever loved me?"

Victoria clenched her fist, restraining the bitterness in her heart, her throat burning, struggled to utter, "Never."

Eugene let out a cold laugh and smiled.

His smile was more unsightly than crying, he turned his head to look at the balcony, after getting over that uncomfortable feeling, he looked back at Victoria, "Do you know that I’ve had a crush on you for so long, were you ever moved?"

Victoria’s heart was bleeding, the pain made her fingertips tremble, even her wrist artery throbbed with pain, she forcefully controlled her voice, "Not moved, only terrified."

Eugene pursed his lips, let out a snort, tears filled his bloodshot eyes.

He tilted his head back, took a long breath, as if trying to swallow his tears down his stomach.

"To be honest." Victoria lowered her head, not daring to look at him, feigned indifference, "In my heart, money is more important than you. I took two hundred million from your father, we can never be in this life, you’d better give up."

Eugene clenched his fist, the veins on the back of his hand bulged with anger, his voice hoarse and choked, "You want money, I’ll give you, is ten billion enough?"

Victoria angrily stood up, her tears now unable to be hidden, shimmering in her eyes, "Eugene, this isn’t about the money, it’s that I would rather have money than you, if you keep pestering me, I’ll sue you, and if I can’t sue you, I’ll hide from you, I’ll hide abroad, to a place where you can’t find me."

Eugene’s tightly clenched fist trembled slightly.

Victoria had always been decisive, once she made up her mind, it wouldn’t easily change.

Having said all she needed to, she turned and walked to the door, opened it, "Leave, this is over for us."

Eugene silently looked at her, his red eyes shedding a clear, glistening tear, which slowly slid down his cold face, dropping to the floor.

His Adam’s apple bobbed, his clenched fists trembled ever so slightly, a layer of despairing gloom enveloped his entire being, sending him to the depths of despair.

The entire living room sank into an extremely oppressive atmosphere, so still it felt like an abyssal cave where one couldn’t find an outlet to breathe.

After a long time, Eugene got up, changed his shoes at the shoe cabinet, his expression as cold as ice, walked past Victoria without a word, out the door, striding away with a sense of finality.

She could tell Eugene had given up too. After closing the door, she couldn’t control it anymore, and the tears came quietly.

With both hands covering her cheeks, her legs weak, she leaned against the door panel, slowly sliding down to sit on the floor.

Her heart felt as if she had crushed it underfoot, hurting so much that she couldn’t breathe, the pain causing her whole body to tremble.

Her heart was bleeding, silently apologizing in her heart:

I’m sorry, Eugene!

I’m sorry!

She had tasted the bitterness of marriage, and now she also tasted the bitterness of love, these feelings only confused her heart, affecting her career, not the future she wanted to pursue.

She sat on the floor and cried for a long time.

Cried until her eyes were swollen and painful, as if she was going to cry out the tears of her entire later life.

The bowl of dumplings on the table, with tears streaming down, and her throat burning, she forced herself to finish them.

These were the most difficult dumplings she had ever swallowed.

Since that day, Eugene Vaughn never came to see her again.

Her life returned to normal.

Every day was just a routine between the lab and her apartment—reading, studying, doing research, and she even managed to pass the pharmaceutical doctorate examination on the side.

Two months passed in the blink of an eye.

Winter passed and spring came, all things revived.

Victoria Sinclair received a call from Angela Austin and hurried to the café.

Angela stood up, waving to her, "Victoria, over here."

Victoria smiled warmly and walked over quickly, placing her bag on the seat beside her, "How come you have time to meet for coffee? Isn’t the research institute busy?"

Angela picked up her phone to scan the code and place an order, "Not busy, what would you like to drink?"

"A latte, with sugar and milk."

Angela was surprised, "Oh, since when do you like sweet drinks?"

Victoria shook her head a bit helplessly, "I’ve had a bad appetite lately, always want something sweet, probably because work has been too hectic and stressful."

Angela placed the order, then set her phone down, folding her hands on the table like a good student, looking at Victoria with a worried face, "Have you seen the reports online?"

"I haven’t had time to follow the news." Victoria smiled, rubbing her slightly aching stomach.

Angela spoke with heavy emphasis, "Eugene Vaughn is engaged."

Victoria was taken aback, her smile gradually froze, and after a few seconds, she pretended to remain calm and forced out a stiff smile again, "It’s got nothing to do with me."

Angela sighed softly, "True, you two are divorced, I just didn’t expect he’d really marry Vivian Miller."

Just then, the waiter brought over the coffee.

"Thank you." Victoria expressed her gratitude, took a sip of the coffee, soothing her dry throat, her eyes downcast on the coffee, "A match made in family interests, a marriage of convenience, it’s exactly what Harold Vaughn wanted."

"But it’s strange, I couldn’t see Eugene Vaughn in those reports." Angela took out her phone, searched for a video, and handed it to Victoria, "Look, this video was leaked from Eugene Vaughn and Vivian Miller’s engagement party. Many guests and reporters were there, relatives from both sides came, but there’s no sign of Eugene Vaughn."

Victoria didn’t take the phone Angela handed over, her voice lowering, "Angela, can we not mention him?"

Angela sighed lightly, "He’s someone else’s fiancé now, so we won’t talk about him."

Victoria felt a subtle spasm in her stomach, a bit nauseous, pressing her hand on her stomach with a frown of discomfort. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

Angela noticed something was wrong, nervously asking, "What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"

"I’ve been too busy with work recently, haven’t had much appetite so I haven’t been eating, probably ruined my stomach." Victoria picked up the coffee, intending to take another sip to ease the uncomfortable feeling.

Angela pressed down on her wrist, "Your stomach hurts and you’re still drinking coffee?"

"It’s okay."

"Let’s go and see a doctor." Angela stood up.

Victoria quickly grabbed her hand, pressing her back down, "I’m really okay, just need to rest a bit."

Angela sat back down with a sigh, "Your schedule and diet have always been very regular, how did you end up with a bad stomach?"

"Too much stress, I suppose."

"Any progress at work?" Angela leaned in.

When it came to work, Victoria’s face couldn’t help but show a confident smile, she nodded happily, "I discovered a highly effective cancer-killing compound from a rare Chinese herbal medicine, and recently I’ve been cultivating this herb in large quantities for research. In the near future, primary central nervous system lymphoma will be conquered."

Angela gave a thumbs up, her eyes sparkling, "As expected of Victoria Sinclair, the old professors must be thrilled!"

Victoria smiled contentedly, "I am a bit regretful that my own company is gone."

Angela raised an eyebrow, pouting with a huff, "You shouldn’t have sold your company, and spent all your money treating your father and paying off your brother’s debt. In the end, they don’t even appreciate it, still thinking your effort was only right."

Victoria gave a bitter smile, saying nothing.

"You were right before, Renee stirring trouble between you and your parents, Sarah Lowell stirring trouble between you and your brother, it was all Vivian Miller’s dirty scheme." Angela slammed her fist onto the table in indignation, "Staying away from your original family is the right choice, I support you."

As soon as she said that, Angela stood up happily and waved towards the entrance.

Victoria was puzzled, following her line of sight.

Nathan Austin came in, wearing rimless glasses, dressed casually, looking refined and gentle.

His smile made Victoria feel sick.

To avoid affecting her friendship with Angela, she’d never told Angela about Nathan’s scheming against her.

"Bro, over here."

Nathan walked over, sat next to Angela, and stared intently at Victoria with an inexplicable smile on his face.

"Victoria, long time no see." Nathan greeted.

Victoria didn’t reply to him, looking towards Angela, "Angela, I have something to do, I should..."

Angela grabbed Victoria’s wrist, "I know you’re off today, don’t make excuses to run away, you’re so smart, don’t you already see my intention?"

Victoria frowned, shocked, looking at her.

The moment the word ’intention’ came out, she understood.

Angela smiled with a hint of mischief, "It’s because my brother fancies you, so he asked me to help and deliberately arranged this meeting."

Victoria slowly clenched her fist, taking a deep breath.

Your best friend, still clueless, just bear with it!

"Angela, I now only want to focus on my career, not considering any men."

Angela pleaded, "Victoria, my brother is really nice, he looks decent, is ambitious, responsible, and reliable, just give him a chance, try it!"

"Even Eugene Vaughn, I’ve already ruled out, do you think I’d consider him?" Victoria said in annoyance.

Angela let go, shrugging towards Nathan, indicating she could only do so much.

Nathan adjusted his glasses, looking at Victoria with a faint smile, "Eugene Vaughn and you are from completely different worlds, but I am the right match for you, both in family and spirit. Victoria, give me a chance."

Victoria gazed into Nathan’s eyes without a word.

She couldn’t see any love in Nathan’s eyes, those mysterious eyes gave her a sense of unease.

It seemed as if there was some undisclosable secret, no trace of affection for her.

What is Nathan’s true intention in pursuing her?

Victoria spoke each word with firm determination, "I won’t marry or date in the second half of my life, I’ve taken note of your kindness, Nathan, but please respect my wishes."

Angela sighed with regret, patting Nathan’s shoulder, "Bro, you saw it yourself, Victoria rejected you, you should give up, and don’t force me into doing such things again."

Nathan pushed Angela’s hand away, firmly locking his eyes onto Victoria, declaring with a determined tone, "Victoria, I really like you, I won’t give up so easily, no matter how hard or exhausting, I will pursue you."

Victoria’s hand under the table slowly clenched into a fist, resting on her thigh, biting her lower lip in restraint, reminding, "Have you forgotten how despicable you were before?"

Angela was confused, looking at Nathan in shock, "What despicable thing did you do to my best friend?"

Nathan’s eyes remained fixed on Victoria’s face, responding calmly, "Because I like you too much, that’s why I tried to sabotage you, isn’t this simple principle clear enough for you?"

Angela looked between Nathan and Victoria, "What exactly happened?"
