Chapter 8: Dark Magic

"I’m afraid there is no next my prince. Go back to your chambers, I need to reason." Royal Knight snapped his fingers, and Derrick vanished.

Derrick was about to protest when he found himself back inside his room.

Derrick took a deep breath before releasing a sigh. Royal Knight was right, he had trained enough for now.

After the awakening ceremony, his training with Sir Thompson was meant to have been put on hold, so there was nothing left for Derrick to do.

Derrick excitedly ran to his bed, he picked up his magic mirror, ready to write Klea or Lancel a message, when he remembered.

His hand hovered over the mirror, his eyes gleaming, tears threatened to escape, but he held them back.

He had been too distracted by everything to truly feel the emotional weight, and now that he was idle, it hit him.

Derrick gently placed his mirror back down. He didn’t want to be reminded of the betrayal.

Derrick’s attention was drawn by the familiar sound of the town crier’s gong.

"Hear he, hear he, the king would like to see every resident of the kingdom in the market square, twenty minutes from now." The town crier announced.

As soon as he finished, Derrick heard Royal Knight’s rhythmic knock coming from the other side of the door.

He opened the door, and there Royal Knight stood, confident as ever.

"Your father would like to make an announcement, don your royal attire, then we depart," Royal Knight announced.

"Is it that serious?" Derrick asked. Usually, the Royal Knight wouldn’t bother him with such things.

Derrick would prefer to stay in the comfort of his palace, and then have the information relayed to him, but this time around, he wasn’t even given a chance to decline.

"I am afraid it is," Royal Knight said, his words heavy.

If one could see through his mask, they would see the slight tethers of fear slowly creeping into his eyes.

It took Derrick a few minutes to get ready, and after that, he and Royal Knight made their way to the carriage.

The moon’s light beamed down on them, casting a silver glow upon Dravania.

"How was today’s training?" Royal Knight asked. He had forgotten earlier.

"What do you mean?" Derrick was confused. Royal Knight was literally there with him.

"How was its difficulty, and please be honest, it’s for your own safety?" Royal Knight asked.

"It was difficult, I won’t lie." Derrick said honestly, the training was brutal, and the only reason he made it through was his system.

"However, I’d like to indulge more in sword training and martial arts," Derrick said honestly.

After his battle against that doll, he had been humbled. He no longer saw his sword skills as the apex, but now the foundation.

Also, he wanted to learn martial arts properly. Not every situation could be fought with swords.

"All in due time," Royal Knight said calmly. He had a plan in mind.

[I’d advise you to also train on your speed and other physical attributes. It helps to increase physical stats easily.]

Glowing red messages appeared in front of Derrick.

Derrick nodded at the system, he needed everything he could get if he was going to become who he had in mind.

"We are here," the carriage driver announced, and Derrick alighted, accompanied by Royal Knight.

Once again, Derrick was in the hall. This was a place where important events or announcements were carried out.

It was basically the kingdom’s spotlight, and was rarely ever used by anyone besides the king or the priest.

Knights surrounded Derrick, completely protecting him from whatever attempt someone might make on his life.

While Derrick walked into the hall, the hands of bystanders just couldn’t stop pointing.

"Is that the trash Prince, the one who failed to awaken magic?" A bystander asked while pointing at Derrick.

"It’s him, the one who got betrayed by his best friend and his girl." Another bystander chimed in.

"Poor lad, I pray the gods change his fate," a bystander said with pity.

"What’s the use protecting that weak trash anyway?" Another bystander said, and Derrick folded his hands into a fist and gritted his teeth.

A week ago, these bystanders wouldn’t even dare open their mouths to utter those words.

However, now that Derrick failed to awaken any magic, they just saw him as a nobody, a son the king wouldn’t even miss.

"Relax my prince." Royal Knight placed his hand on Derrick’s shoulder, soothing his anger.

"There is no need to fight or make any kind of display here," Royal Knight advised.

Derrick could very well have that bystander beheaded for the disrespect he afforded him, and no one would dare speak up.

However, Derrick wasn’t that kind of person, and deep down, he felt it wasn’t right to do such a thing.

While Derrick’s moral compass spun, a familiar, soft laughter entered his ears, bringing him joy.

He turned to look at the woman who used to be the love of his life, standing beside a man he once regarded as a brother.

Derrick’s heart flamed, the disgrace and betrayal these two gave him was more than enough.

He took deep breaths, steadying himself, and that was when his eyes locked with Klea’s.

The anger in his heart rose once again, and Klea could tell.

She flashed him a smirk, a smile that used to bring him peace and comfort, but now brought pain and betrayal.

She raised her head to whisper in Lancel’s ear, and Lancel also turned to look at Derrick.

A smirk also flashed across Lancel’s face, and Derrick folded his hands into fists.

’I should challenge him to a duel.’ Derrick wanted Lancel out of this world, and he wanted it fast.

What infuriated him the most was the fact that Lancel was incapable of seeing through Klea’s games.

His brother had betrayed him to a woman who would leave him for someone more powerful as soon as she got the chance.

Lancel and Klea both stared at Derrick, before locking lips.

Derrick’s anger rose once more, he took two steps forward and laid his hand on the hilt of his sword.

"That is most unwise," Royal Knight said, holding Derrick’s shoulder.

"That is a clear ploy from both of them, trying to see if they can provoke you," Royal Knight explained.

"Some may even call it a trap for fools," Royal Knight added.

"The earlier you kill your feelings for that girl, the better." Royal Knight didn’t know what else to say.

Matters of the heart were delicate. If handled harshly or with anger, it mostly leads to the worst situations.

"So what do I just do?" Derrick asked, his voice slightly raised.

The crowd was slowly diverting their attention more to Derrick, they wanted to know what exactly was provoking Derrick.

"You are causing a scene, my prince," Royal Knight said while his eyes darted from place to place, finding the best possible route in case Derrick couldn’t handle the pain well.

Derrick was about to continue when he heard his father’s voice.

"I shall skip the pleasantries, the severity of this situation calls for an immediate and swift response." The king spoke, and everyone keenly listened.

The king’s tone, voice and demeanor were all too serious, it made them wonder just what was so bad that it made him act like this.

"It has come to my attention that the kingdom of Dravania is under attack," the king said, and everyone gasped.

Dravania was the most powerful kingdom out there, it was seen as a role model, a benchmark or a perfect example to other kingdoms.

Hearing that such a mighty kingdom was under attack was strange.

"At first, we wondered if any of our neighboring kingdoms perpetrated these attacks." The king’s words made sense.

Kingdoms often fought one another, all in an effort to overthrow the other kingdom.

In fact, Dravania had amassed such a massive land and such wealth through multiple conquests.

"But, I was assured by the priests that no kingdom did this." The king explained, piquing everyone’s curiosity.

"Then, we carried out an investigation to see if it was dark beasts, but that was proven false." The king continued.

At this point, people began to whisper among themselves, if it wasn’t beasts or a human, then what could attack Dravania?

Dravania was well fortified, and those were the only two ways it could be attacked.

"I’m sure it’s a magical beast, the king is just trying to cover it up," a random bystander spoke.

The king shot him a deadly look from his podium. His eyes locked, and the bystander could feel overwhelming pressure in his chest, forcing out violent coughs. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

"I would prefer absolute silence," the king said domineeringly.

To pass on his message, the king wanted silence to help reduce misinformation and other corrupt sources of information.

"Thankfully, I have been able to determine our attackers." Everyone leaned in closer, eager to hear the voice of the king.

"It was the work of dark magic."
