Chapter 46: Duel Of Princes

Ivan was the first to attack, three ice spikes materialized out of thin air, all hurtling towards Derrick at a rapid pace.

Derrick remained calm, in a nanosecond, he drew his nullspire sword, swinging it masterfully.

As soon as Derrick’s blade touched the ice, it vanished.

It didn’t break, it didn’t shatter, it just vanished, one second it was there, and the next it wasn’t.

"How did he do that?" Members of the crowd asked themselves.

The way Ivan’s ice spike reacted, it was almost as if it had been undone, like a loose thread had been pulled and the whole thing came crumbling.

Ivan was wary. There was a second of shock and confusion on his face, but he quickly dismissed it. After all, it was Derrick.

Ice gathered underneath Ivan’s feet and his body slid forward, closing the distance in the blink of an eye.

Ice gathered around both of Ivan’s fists. He planned to use the speed of the slide to attack, but Derrick was there steps ahead.

Derrick leaped into the air, he used his Air step to keep himself temporarily afloat, and then landed behind Ivan.

He side kicked Ivan’s back, and quickly followed with an attack from his sword.

Ivan was too slow to dodge, forcing him to slide away once more.

[That sliding thing is going to be a problem.]

The system had to admit.

Derrick, on the other hand, didn’t panic, he still had his Dragon Flash, which, in his estimation, was faster than Ivan’s ice slide.

Tiny ice shards materialized all around Derrick, and without warning they all flew towards him.

Derrick drew breath, his heartbeat slowed, and his mind calmed.

Black and white quickly filled his vision, and everything around him turned into wireframes.

Lines surrounded Derrick, each line guiding his moves, he struck the ice shards gracefully, turning them into nothingness.

"Such graceful movements," a member of the crowd said, unable to believe such swordsmanship was coming from Derrick.

Several similar comments came from members of the crowd, they were unable to believe the trash Prince was holding his own against Ivan.

’That should be impossible,’ Ivan said to himself. The attacks he was hitting Derrick with weren’t ordinary shards.

Those ice shards were designed to explode on impact and freeze whatever they touched, but here Derrick was, cutting them down like they were nothing.

The attack Ivan was using was meant to kill Derrick, but for a reason unknown to him, they were failing.

Derrick’s body exploded forward, Ivan stomped his feet, creating an ice boulder to protect him, but Derrick cut through it like a hot knife through butter.

Derrick swung his sword, a thick shield made of ice materialized, and Ivan tried to block Derrick’s attack, but his sword cut through the shield, breaking it into pieces.

[It seems the more magic put into an attack, the longer it takes for the sword to work.]

Derrick’s earlier attacks didn’t break Ivan’s ice constructs, besides his shield.

Ivan wasn’t given any breathing space, Derrick was already above him, his sword wrapped in thick dragon energy, hovering inches away from Ivan’s face.

A blue magical circle appeared before Ivan, and an ice boulder the size of a redwood tree flew out of it.

The boulder was fast, too fast for Derrick to dodge, he steeled his resolve, calmed his mind, and followed the single line in his vision.

He planted his feet firmly on the ground, and made a clean straight cut, that split the boulder into two.

Everyone stood up, unable to believe their eyes, such a feat should have been impossible.

"Does your son have some unknown magic we are yet to know about?" A Dravanian noble addressed the king.

"No, that is pure swordsmanship and dedication." The king’s words were true.

Sure, the Nullspire sword played a big role in what he had just done, but Derrick’s swordsmanship was the key.

Even if an inexperienced swordsman held Excalibur, he would be less dangerous than an experienced swordsman holding a twig.

Frustration crept into Ivan’s face, he was unable to accept that Derrick had survived the boulder.

Just before he could do anything, Derrick swung both hands violently, releasing ten thin lines made of pure dragon energy.

Ivan raised a boulder of ice to protect himself, and the claws struck the ice, causing a loud explosion.

Frost covered the entire colosseum, drastically reducing the vision of many, excluding Derrick.

In a few seconds, Derrick was already before Ivan, his blade coated in pure dragon energy.

He stabbed his sword forward, and Ivan managed to dodge at the last second, but the blade had already grazed his arm.

The incessant burning from the dragon energy made Ivan groan in pain, but Derrick didn’t stop there.

Now that frost was reducing visibility, it gave him the opportunity to use his newly acquired skill.

Derrick opened his mouth, and from the depth of his stomach, a jet of pure red flames erupted.

Ivan was caught by surprise, he quickly summoned an ice shield, which Derrick’s fire breath tore through.

Ivan raised his hand to block his face, giving Derrick the opening he had been looking for.

Derrick’s sword dropped to the ground, and he activated his dragon fists.

Both fists slammed into Ivan, coated with both dragon energy and raw, uncontrolled Varyn.

The punch struck Ivan’s chest, knocking his entire body backwards.

Ivan’s body flailed uncontrollably, before finally crashing into the ground.

[Ivan is untrained.]The system noted. Even a blind man could see it.

Ivan had been so focused on training his magical abilities, that he had deeply neglected his physical attributes.

Besides that, he barely even tried his magic. The only thing that was barely keeping him afloat was his master’s talent.

The frost cleared, and everyone could see Ivan’s body, lying on the floor, with blood oozing from it.

Gasps and comments expressing shock filled the colosseum, nobody could believe the direction this fight was going in.

Since the battle started, it had always been close, but now, Derrick had taken the lead.

Derrick used Dragon Flash to move forward, he raised his sword above his head, ready to end it all.

Inches away from Ivan’s head, everything changed.

Ivan’s body vanished, leaving behind several ice shards.

Derrick didn’t have time to process it all, ice burst from every shard simultaneously.

Derrick leaped backwards, using his Air step to give himself an advantage, but even then, it still wasn’t enough.

Several spikes and shards made of ice lodged themselves into his body.

[Foreign magic has been detected.]

[Your internal organs are freezing.]

Derrick grit his teeth, he landed back on the ground, his body was severely damaged, and his nerves were screaming in pain.

’Do something Derrick.’ The king was struggling to control himself.

He was willing to rush into the colosseum himself and stop the fight if that was what it meant.

As a father, he didn’t want any of his sons to die in this duel, but he knew that if Derrick died, they would lose their only hope against the dark emperor.

The ice had also broken several of Derrick’s bones, and severed ligaments, muscles and other important body parts.

A giant ice boulder appeared above Derrick, and began falling fast.

Derrick rolled away, the ice dug deeper into his body, but he steeled his resolve.

[Regeneration and healing has been activated.]

A strange warmth engulfed Derrick’s body, followed by a rush of energy which made Derrick smile.

The ice was instantly launched out of his body, and his wounds rapidly healed.

"What was that?" This thought was collectively running through everyone’s mind, including the king and Sir Thompson.

None of them knew Derrick had a healing factor, especially not one as advanced as what they had just seen.

Derrick’s healing and regeneration was almost indistinguishable from magic.

Everyone just assumed it was a healing enchantment, and remained glued to the fight.

"Enough of this!" Ivan shouted angrily. He was tired of playing games.

Ice wrapped around his body, forming what looked to be a full set of knight armor from pure ice.

In his left hand was a three-layer shield made of pure ice, with a magical circle hovering atop it.

And in his right hand was a thick long spear made of pure ice.

Derrick took a deep breath, he knew things were about to get serious, but he couldn’t care less.

He also had a few tricks up his sleeve and was more than ready to strike.

Ivan covered the distance between them both in the blink of an eye, propelled by ice.

Derrick responded with two dragon fists, which cracked Ivan’s armor, but wasn’t strong enough to break it.

Ivan swung his sword and Derrick dodged, his sword appeared in his hand, but just before he could strike Ivan, he felt something.

A blinding chill coming from his chest, followed by a system message that he would come to dread.

[Your heart has been pierced.]
