Chapter 40: Test Of The Royal Knight

Royal knight’s eyes flickered open, the weight on his chest felt insurmountable, but he managed to struggle to his feet.

His eyes darted around the place trying to assess the surrounding happenings, but no matter how hard he tried, his mind remained clouded.

’What’s this?’ Royal Knight asked himself, staring into the clouds, he could see a strange reaction.

Reality cracked, a loud thrum thundered, and the ground shook violently.

Royal Knight felt a sharp sting in the back of his head, and all of a sudden, his memories came flooding.

His eyes widened, and his vision returned to normal, finally allowing him to understand what was going on.

The shadows in the clouds began to fade, allowing the golden rays of sunlight to flood through.

The sunlight hit the ground, returning it to life, dead flowers blossomed, and greenery returned to the once dead village.

Royal Knight stared around him. He had saved the village but at what cost?

Everyone and everything in it had been destroyed, his mission was an almost complete failure.

Royal Knight sighed, a simple peer into his energy reserves revealed what he had been feeling all along.

His power level was dropping, and fast, at this rate, he’d be just as strong as any regular knight in about a month.

’Thanks be to the king.’ Royal Knight had to give credit where it was due.

The king had taken a share of his burden. If it wasn’t for him, then he would be losing his powers much faster.

Now that war was rapidly encroaching on Dravania, Royal Knight was even more paranoid.

If anything befell the kingdom, and he was unable to protect it, then he wasn’t sure how he would live with himself.

While Royal Knight’s mind worked relentlessly, the rays of sunlight hit a strange creature in the distance, causing it to glisten.

The strange glow caught Royal Knight’s attention and drew him in.

Perhaps, there was still more to this mission after all.

The closer he drew, the more he noticed something strange.

The surrounding greenery warped. The closer he got to the creature, the weaker the greenery got.

Eventually, the plants began to fall and wither, turning the entire place into bare ground like earlier.

’That’s weird,’ Royal Knight assessed. He had gone even deeper and the ground itself had turned ashen.

A foul smell hit his nose, the stench of death and rot was potent.

Flies buzzed around the creature, but they dropped shortly after.

Royal Knight’s curiosity outweighed the warning bells in his mind.

He knelt down inches away from the creature, observing it keenly.

’What perverted creature is this?’ Royal Knight asked himself.

The creature he was looking at was a strange one. The best way to describe it would be a huge black eye with little legs all around its sides.

Royal Knight backed away, a mix of fear and instinct, he was unable to believe what he was seeing

’I need to take this back to the scholars.’ Whatever this creature was, it was way too valuable and dangerous for Royal Knight to leave this village.

He looked around him. In the distance he could see some villagers cautiously approaching.

Royal Knight turned back to the creature, its legs were still moving, but it looked... weak.

Almost like it was on the brink of death, which was quite ironic.

Royal Knight was unsure of what to do, with his magic and Varyn down, he was scared that touching it would drain his life force, or worse.

’I need to hide this from them.’ Royal Knight made a quick decision.

Taking it right now would do more harm than good. He would return to this site with some scholars later.

Studying this strange creature could give them an insight into the dark Emperor’s plans.

"E Que bara vingt tu..." Royal Knight chanted, and reality warped around the creature.

Its color changed rapidly, and so did its texture, until it blended in with its surroundings.

’I may not have magic and Varyn, but I still have my enchantments and runes.’ Royal Knight was far from normal. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

The villagers finally reached Royal Knight, and their faces looked expectant.

"Sir, sir, what happened?" One of the villagers asked eagerly.

"Where are all our people and livestock?" the villagers asked, smiles on their faces.

For a second, Royal Knight felt a sharp pain in his chest, one that he had come to know as guilt.

"I... I couldn’t save them," Royal Knight said, his voice cracking.

"What?" Another villager asked, shock and disappointment weaved its way into him.

Royal Knight adjusted himself and regained his composure. "I said I was not able to save them," Royal Knight repeated.

"They were dead the second the shadows hit them, there was nothing that could be done," Royal Knight said uncaringly, completely devoid of emotion.

"You are a knight, you were supposed to save them." Another villager said in shock.

"We were promised the best knight out there, and yet he couldn’t save a simple village?" Another villager screamed.

He picked up his shovel and raised it to strike Royal Knight with tears streaming down his eyes.

Royal Knight could see the shovel from a mile away, but he didn’t move, his conscience wouldn’t let him.

The shovel broke apart on his armor, and wood flew everywhere.

"I’m sorry, nothing could be done." Royal Knight turned to leave, but the words from the villagers cut through him.

"You apologize, but we hear no sympathy in your voice." Another villager screamed.

Royal Knight continued walking forward, his fists clenched and his mind struggling to stay calm.

With every step he took, the weight on his shoulders grew, he knew that he couldn’t wait, he couldn’t just sit by and watch evil dig its roots deeper into this world.

Royal Knight finally snapped, his anger poured through.

’I’m ending this!’ Royal Knight made a decision, one that he planned to follow through unrelentingly.

He needed to find the one who caused all this, the one who abused his power and sold his people, he needed to find the village chief.
