Chapter 35: Battle Without Varyn

The explosion hit Royal Knight like a wall, throwing him off his feet.

Its roar was absolute, carrying a shockwave that spread in every direction, tearing through whatever dared block its path.

The dust settled, and the only thing left was silence, but not the peaceful kind.

Royal Knight stood in the center of it all, his surroundings had turned completely black, burned to a crisp.

The houses, the bodies, the cows in the field, all of it gone. Where the village had stood moments ago, only ash remained.

He looked down at his hand, the pebble was gone.

’Was it a trap?’ Royal Knight asked himself.

The moment he touched the pebble, the whole thing went up, destroying every piece of evidence in one move.

"If it was, then that was very clever." Royal Knight couldn’t deny his opponent’s brilliance.

He took a step forward, and the next thing that followed was a violent cough, forcing him to cover his mouth.

He pulled his hand away from his mouth, and there it was, specks of blood, the explosion had inflicted serious internal bleeding on him.

Royal Knight recollected himself, "Logic, not emotion." He said slowly.

He was about to step forward when he heard it.

A strange, wet sound coming from above.

Royal Knight immediately drew his sword, unwilling to be caught off guard.

He looked forward, and there it was in the distance.

One of the rotten humans from earlier, but this one was different.

It was dressed in full knightly armor, and had a sword in its hands.

Its dark green eyes glowed through the slits in its helmet.

’Shit.’ Royal Knight had sustained enough damage in that last explosion, and he wasn’t willing to take anymore.

He looked down at his armor, small cracks were already forming in them, it was only a matter of time until it completely broke apart.

"If you can hear me, turn around, and you will not taste my steel." Royal Knight declared boldly.

Sure, he didn’t have his Varyn, or his abilities, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t fight.

Yes, he was just a man, but he was a very well trained one, who didn’t want to fight.

The creature growled at Royal Knight, before sprinting forward.

Royal Knight didn’t panic, he didn’t move, instead, he studied.

Sure, this creature wasn’t human, but it still moved, and had a humanoid structure.

That meant, there would be small tells, or micro movements he could read, which could give him an edge in this battle.

The creature swung its sword, at a speed far from human, but Royal Knight dodged easily.

Royal Knight responded with an explosive step, similar to Derrick’s dragon flash.

He compressed the muscles in his leg, and at the last moment, released the pressure, giving him a short burst of speed.

It was a technique he had developed himself, after watching Derrick use dragon flash.

He closed the distance instantly, and used the momentum to spin, allowing him to deliver a powerful kick, that caused the creature to stumble backwards.

Royal Knight didn’t stop there, he moved in once again, but this time, he was met by the creature’s blade, which he narrowly dodged.

’Its fast.’ Royal Knight couldn’t deny that, and it was only a matter of time, until its attacks hit him.

Royal Knight parried another attack from the creature, and he could feel the force behind its attack.

’And strong too.’ Royal Knight rolled backwards, creating distance between he and the creature.

The creature charged once again, and Royal Knight just stood there, calm as ever.

As soon as the creature came close, something strange happened, Royal Knight’s blade moved.

The movement wasn’t regular, it was almost as if he knew what the creature was going to do, where it was going to be, and when.

And that was because he did, by reading the micro movements and tells from earlier, Royal Knight had been able to deduce this creature’s fighting style and patterns.

On a normal human, it would take much longer to read, but since this creature was far from human, its moves were telegraphed, and didn’t need much effort to read.

Royal Knight swung his blade, beheading the creature instantly.

The creature’s headless body fell to the ground, giving Royal Knight the satisfaction he needed.

He pulled out a small rag from his pouch, and wiped the blood off his blade, he couldn’t have it dulled by the blood of this ungodly abomination.

Royal Knight sheathed his blade once again, and turned to leave, when he heard it.

Something crawling across the ground and rapidly heading towards him.

He turned, only to see the recently beheaded creature, which already lunged at him.

The creature hit him right in the center of his chest, sending him flying.

Royal Knight’s head struck a boulder, and bounced off it, cracking a piece of his helmet.

He immediately stood to his feet, the creature was already in front of him, with its sword outstretched.

Royal Knight ducked underneath the blade, allowing it to fly over his head.

He swept the legs of the creature, causing it to ultimately lose balance, and fall face first into the ground.

Royal Knight didn’t give the creature a moment of rest, he cut off its legs and hands, rendering it immobile.

The creature shrieked, a blood curdling scream, that made blood pour from Royal Knight’s ear drums.

Royal Knight looked at the creature, its head was gone, but it was clearly still alive.

However, upon further inspection, he noticed something, the chest of the creature moving up and down.

He stabbed his blade right through its chest, piercing its rotten heart, killing it once and for all.

Royal Knight stuck his hand inside the center of its chest, searching for any pebbles or clues.

Instead, all he got was roaches and other insects crawling rapidly out of the holes in the creature, along with an ever growing mystery.

Royal Knight heaved a heavy sigh, sheathed his blade and turned to leave.

Then he caught something in the corner of his eye.

A house in the distance, still standing.
