Chapter 21: Peeling The Curtains

Derrick was at a loss for words, his eyes remained fixated on Royal Knight, struggling to process the words he just heard.

’How does he know about the system?’ Derrick finally asked himself.

To the best of his knowledge, he had never heard of anyone with a system, so he didn’t understand how Royal Knight knew.

Of course, Royal Knight didn’t exactly say the words ’system’, but ’Dragon spirit’ sounded like something that would come from his system.

"How?" Derrick asked the first question on his mind.

Royal Knight chuckled once more, pain and frustration written all over his voice.

The emotions he had been hiding finally burst out all at once.

"You truly are clueless, aren’t you?" Royal Knight’s voice was sharp and condescending.

"What do you know?" Derrick was curious. One thing he hated was not knowing everything, especially when it came to himself.

"There is a prophecy, one that concerns the dark emperor and the great dragon spirit," Royal Knight started, and Derrick leaned in, his ears perked.

"Long ago, the gods and great heroes, went to war against the great demons." Derrick had heard a version of this story before, but it sounded different this time.

"After years of war, only two remained, the great dragon and the demon lord." Derrick nodded his head attentively.

"The great dragon managed to lethally wound the demon lord, but in his final moments, the demon lord’s soul escaped, and went into the world to find a new host." A confused look appeared on Derrick’s face. This was not the version of the story he had been told.

"The great dragon had also been lethally wounded, and it knew that no other being could defeat the dragon lord, which forced it to find a champion of its own." Royal Knight paused. That was where the story got interesting.

"If you don’t already know, the dark emperor is the avatar of the demon lord, and you are the avatar of the great dragon." Derrick had already pieced together that fact.

"The last time the demon lord showed his face, we waited years for the avatar of the great dragon to show, and they were nowhere to be found." Royal Knight’s voice cracked a little.

"Some other warriors and I, grandmasters from far and near, including your father, were forced to fight the dark emperor. " Royal knight slouched in his chair and then sighed. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

"I was just about twenty Derrick, I didn’t deserve the horrors I faced." Tears streamed down Royal Knight’s eyes, but his helmet hid them.

"We lost almost every man that went to war with us, and most were left either broken, or unfit to continue their duties." Derrick could tell Royal Knight was crying, and he felt guilt begin to seep in.

"After everything, we managed to imprison the dark emperor and strip him of his power, but the man who made the enchantment warned us about your awakening." Royal Knight took a pause.

"My awakening?" Derrick questioned, still struggling to believe what he was told.

"Yes Derrick, as soon as the grandmaster star shone upon you, we knew it was going to be you," Royal Knight continued.

"You were going to be the one to awaken the dragon spirit, and under our guidance, you were to be made into a weapon that would end the dark Emperor once and for all, unlike your predecessors," Royal Knight explained.

"When you awakened the dragon spirit that day in the forest, we knew you were going to set the dark emperor free." Royal Knight’s voice was heavy.

"But we didn’t expect you to be magicless Derrick..." Royal Knight couldn’t hide it anymore.

Derrick had disappointed them beyond measure, being magicless was something they wouldn’t wish on their worst enemy, let alone their savior.

"I..." Derrick didn’t know what to say, he knew deep down that he wasn’t magicless, but what proof could he show Royal Knight?

The system had refused to tell him how to awaken any magic.

"I mean, I needed to use magic, Varyn, swordsmanship, enchantments and every trick in my book." The memories of war weighed on Royal Knight. "Yet, it wasn’t enough." Royal knight’s words demoralized Derrick.

He couldn’t help but feel that this whole thing was his fault, and despite that, he was too powerless to make things right.

"The gods would not have done what they did if they knew I wouldn’t win." Derrick defended himself.

Sure, Royal Knight and everyone else might have lost faith in him, but he refused to lose faith in himself.

"I don’t care, even if I don’t have any magic, I’m bringing the dark emperor to his knees." Derrick was determined, if he had set the dark emperor free, then it was his duty to see to his death.

"You said I was going to learn Varyn, right?" Derrick asked, and Royal Knight nodded.

"So that’s what we’ll do," Derrick declared firmly, his eyes burning with determination and resolve.

Royal Knight looked at Derrick, his heart was set ablaze.

If a weak, magicless boy like Derrick could stand tall in the face of adversity, then how dare he falter?

He was the adult, the protector, Derrick’s Almighty Royal Knight, he was the one meant to stand tall in the face of adversity.

He was the one meant to be filled with hope and faith. The one Derrick was supposed to look up to.

But here he was, he had already given up hope, but Derrick was still standing firmly.

"My prince." Royal Knight’s voice had regained the vigor and strength it once had.

"Today you learn Varyn!" Royal Knight declared and Derrick smirked.

While that was happening, the sounds of war filled the ears of knights.

All around them, swords clashed and magic pulsed, one side decimating the other.

"They are too strong." A knight screamed, he stretched his hand, and a green beam of energy fired through the battlefield.

"Do not falter, young knight, we are the last hope of these people." Another knight screamed, his sword in his hand.

"How do you expect us to best an army of the undead?" Another knight asked, firing multiple attacks in rapid succession.

"Give up now!" A dark eerie voice hit the knights all at once, and shivers ran down their spines.

"You shall not succeed." The eerie voice carried an aura that made people paralyzed with fear.

"You lie, necromancer!" A knight screamed, unwilling to accept his fate.

"Very well." The eerie voice snickered, pleased with the decision of the knights.

A loud snap hit the knights at once, and the knights all turned into the dust, leaving behind a silent battlefield.
