Chapter 10: A New Challenge

The sound of Royal Knight’s rhythmic knocks pulled Derrick from sleep.

’What could possibly be happening?’ Derrick had never been woken up by Royal Knight before, even during emergencies.

Derrick dragged himself awake, groggily moving to his door.

With still blurry eyes, he twisted his door knob, and once again, it was Royal Knight.

"You know, if I keep seeing you every morning, I’m going to think you see me as more than just your prince." Derrick jested, but Royal Knight didn’t reciprocate his sense of humor.

"I’m afraid it will become a regular occurrence," Royal Knight said, his eyes fixed on Derrick.

"Get ready, you have training." Royal Knight’s words made Derrick groan.

It was too early for training, but he knew it was a must. With his upcoming duel and everything with the dark Emperor, he couldn’t afford to slack.

Derrick freshened up and got dressed, before heading out with Royal Knight.

"Why don’t we just teleport?" Derrick asked. It was faster and less stressful.

"Because, I’ve moved the training grounds to your quarters." Royal Knight’s words caught Derrick off guard.

"It would help you train easily in your spare time," Royal Knight explained.

The more Derrick trained, the more likely he was to win the duel.

Derrick walked through his chambers, admiring the beautiful artwork all around.

Inside the palace, there were other smaller chambers, all belonging to various members of the Royal family.

Each chamber was already the size of a small mansion with more than enough staff at the disposal of its Lord, which in this case was Derrick.

"Prince Derrick." Royal Knight’s words drew Derrick’s attention, forcing him to turn his head.

"I’d just like to make sure you understand the importance of winning this duel." Royal Knight’s words were heavy and serious.

Derrick sighed, he took a deep breath before saying, "Yes, I do." His voice tired.

"Your brother, as lazy as he is, does hold some power..." Royal Knight spoke, picking his words carefully.

"True, but if you teach me Varyn, I should be able to hold my own," Derrick said confidently.

In his mind, Varyn was his best possible choice in this fight.

It was the only thing that could help him close the massive magical gap between him and his brother.

"If your body grows strong enough, then I don’t see why not." Royal Knight’s words lightened Derrick’s mood.

Learning Varyn was crucial to him. If he was ever in a situation where he had no mana in the future, he would draw his Varyn.

Derrick was about to ask another question when Royal Knight’s words cut him off.

"We are here," Royal knight said, pointing at a small wooden door.

He twisted the knob, revealing the massive training grounds with all the equipment present.

Derrick walked in after Royal Knight, he couldn’t help but admire the magic that ran through the palace.

Moving the training grounds from where it was initially located to his personal chambers was another level of magic.

"I don’t think a wooden door is enough security or privacy." Derrick raised his obvious concern.

"That wooden door has enough runes on it to withstand a thousand goblins," Royal Knight said confidently.

"I believe you know what to do?" Royal knight said and Derrick nodded.

In one hour, he finished his push-ups, and was ready to move on to the next stage of his training.

"I need to assess your speed." Royal Knight said with his hand resting on his chin.

Derrick, still huffing and panting, remembered the words of the system.

It encouraged him to train other physical aspects and not just his strength.

"Run, from this point, to the end of the field and back." Royal Knight’s hands pointed to where he was referring to.

"That’s roughly three kilometers," Derrick said, still tired.

"I could expand it if you want?" Derrick’s neck snapped towards Royal Knight.

"Don’t you dare!" Derrick said, his tone slightly raised.

Royal Knight could understand his frustration, and didn’t utter a word. He instead, chose to just stare at him.

Derrick took a deep breath, before taking off, sprinting towards the end at full speed.

’His speed is...’ Royal Knight was at a loss for words.

’Explosive.’ Royal Knight had to commend, Derrick wasn’t moving at regular human speeds.

During his training with Sir Thompson, Derrick had easily reached peak human physicality, but with the help of the system, he was rapidly surpassing that.

To put it into perspective, Derrick’s top speed was three times that of Olympic sprinters, an impressive difference, but not enough to counter magic.

’With constant training, he could fight with just his physical prowess.’ Royal Knight was actually seeing a future for Derrick.

One where despite his magicless state, he was able to rise through the ranks, using raw physical abilities.

After all, if Derrick wielded this strength and speed of a beast, he would be a force to be reckoned with.

While Royal Knight was in thought, enough time had passed, and Derrick returned, breathless.

"Very good," Royal Knight said, pride filling his voice.

"Keep this up, and you will defeat Prince Ivan." Derrick grew even weaker at the sound of those words.

He regretted his decision even more every day, he had put himself in an unfavorable situation.

"Instead of regretting this, why not use it as motivation?" Royal Knight could read Derrick’s expression.

"This is your chance to show the world that its grandmaster is capable." Royal knight’s words made Derrick smile.

"You are the chosen one, Prince Derrick, never forget it." Derrick straightened his posture. Those words had motivated him to the next level.

"What’s next?" Derrick asked. He had a lot to prove, and even more to lose. Slacking off wasn’t an option.

"That," Royal Knight pointed at an exact replica of the old wooden doll in the distance.

"I’ve already beaten the doll," Derrick said confidently.

"You beat it at level 1, this is level 2," Royal Knight explained.

"So?" Derrick had also grown stronger since his last encounter with the doll. He was confident in being able to take this one down.

"Be careful Prince Derrick, this one may kill you."
