Chapter 313: Pretend

Georgia’s POV

Someone handed me a paper towel, and I took it right away, wiping my mouth as I turned on the faucet. My reflection in the steel sink looked pitifully pale.

"I’m fine... but my stomach isn’t," I muttered, rinsing my mouth. "Do you have any antacids?" I asked, glancing at Alfie, who was already standing beside Nick, looking worried.

"I’ll get some for you right away, madam," Alfie replied politely before rushing off.

Nick clicked his tongue and sighed. "Those damn investors. This happened because you ate so late at lunch thanks to them." His tone softened as his hand rubbed small circles on my back. "Come on. Do you want to lie down in my room for a while?"

I could only nod. My body was screaming for rest.

Nick turned to one of the maids. "Tell Alfie to bring the medicine to my room instead," he instructed. "Also, have one of the guest rooms ready for my daughter and her nanny. We’ll stay here tonight."

The maid nodded quickly before hurrying off, and Nick gently led me toward the grand staircase.

Halfway up, we spotted Benjamin and Vicky in what looked like a serious conversation. When Vicky noticed us, she immediately waved us over.

"Oliver just called," Vicky said quietly once we were close. "Nancy’s missing. She and two other prisoners escaped. The police have been searching all around the jail, but there’s no sign of them yet." 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"What?" Nick’s brows knitted instantly. "They must’ve had help from outside."

Benjamin stepped forward, his voice calm but firm. "Stay here tonight. It’s safer—for everyone. Just in case someone really did help her escape."

Nick nodded. "That’s already my plan. Georgia’s not feeling well." Then he turned to Vicky. "Tell Oliver I’ll call him after she’s settled."

Vicky gave a quick nod before walking away, and Nick guided me upstairs again, his arm steady and warm around my waist.

"How about Katie?" I asked weakly. "She’ll look for me if she doesn’t see me."

Nick smiled softly. "I’ll tell Amara and one of the maids to bring her to the guest room once she’s sleepy. Don’t worry."

He opened the door to his room and led me inside. The moment I felt the plush sheets, my body melted into them.

"I’ll have the driver pick up some clothes for you at home," he said, tucking the blanket over me carefully. "You’ve had such a long, nerve-wracking day. You’ve barely rested lately, so it’s no wonder your body’s giving up a little."

His hand brushed a few strands of hair away from my face, and his voice softened even more. "Just rest now, okay? I’ve got you."

I nodded, eyes half-closed. Even though I still want to say something and wait for the antacids that I requested, my vision is spinning, and it was only a matter of time before I completely dozed off.

************************

Unknown to everyone, Sarah was quietly making her way back to the dining room after freshening up in the powder room. The sounds of conversations from the dining room faded as she neared the hallway—until Vicky’s voice cut through, tense and urgent.

Sarah froze behind the half-closed door, her pulse quickening as she listened. The words "Nancy... missing... escape..." sent chills crawling up her spine. She peeked just in time to see Vicky’s grave expression and Nick’s darkening one beside Georgia.

By the time dinner ended, Sarah’s heart was still pounding. She didn’t even touch dessert. The moment she spotted Reagan standing up, she grabbed his wrist and yanked him toward the stairs.

"What the—Sarah?" Reagan laughed, startled, but his tone shifted when she locked his bedroom door behind them.

He leaned against the bedpost, smirking. "Do you really want to do it here while everyone’s downstairs? I didn’t know you liked this kind of thrill."

Sarah glared. "This isn’t about that." She folded her arms, her voice sharp. "I overheard something—something serious. Vicky told your father, Nick, and Georgia that Nancy escaped from prison. Tell me the truth, Reagan. Did you help her?"

Reagan’s smirk vanished. "What?" He blinked rapidly, the color draining from his face. "Nancy escaped?"

"You didn’t know?" Sarah pressed, eyes narrowing. "So, you’re saying you had nothing to do with it?"

"Of course not!" he shot back. "Why the hell would I?"

"Because she threatened to reveal your secret," Sarah snapped.

Reagan exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah, I know what she said. But helping her? That’d be suicide. If she talks, she exposes not only me, but Raymond as well. You think she’d risk that? She’s obsessed with him, Sarah—she’d never do anything that could destroy him."

Sarah frowned, pacing. "You have a point. Then who helped her?"

Reagan’s jaw clenched. "If it wasn’t me, then maybe..." He trailed off, his mind racing.

"Maybe what?" she demanded.

"Maybe she cornered Raymond instead. Or worse—she reached out to the same people who helped Raymond and David before." His voice dropped lower, heavy with meaning.

"Help them with what?" Sarah asked curiously.

"Better you know nothing, Sarah. Don’t get involved, it’s dangerous." Reagan warned her.

Sarah rolled her eyes. "Fine, I won’t ask. But you think she’d go that far?"

Reagan met her eyes, his expression grim. "Nancy’s capable of anything. After what she did—after knowing she’s capable of killing someone—I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s made a deal with the devil himself. She’ll destroy anyone who stands between her and what she wants."

Sarah shivered. The way he said it... It wasn’t just fear. It was knowledge.

Something told her Reagan knew far more about Nancy—and the secrets buried in their family—than he dared to admit.

"So, what are we going to do now?" Sarah asked as she crossed her arms.

"We are not going to do anything. We will not do anything. Pretend you didn’t hear anything. Let them fix it. They have Oliver, and I am sure he can solve it without us getting involved. I just want a quiet, normal life, Sarah. I don’t want to ruin what we are starting now," Reagan said.

Sarah nodded, but something in her tells her that this won’t end tonight.
