Chapter 324: Chapter 324: Can’t Keep Running Away

Cindy Sterling wasn’t in a hurry to hear his response. Minutes passed, her face still carried a faint smile. Although her cheeks grew warmer, her heart felt quite at ease.

She had originally given up, not wanting anyone to be delayed by this face of hers. But it was he who insisted on coming; he said he would take responsibility to the end, and he helped her gain courage bit by bit. Therefore, she didn’t want to be a coward about this matter anymore.

One must be timid when it calls for timidness, and brave when it calls for bravery.

Finally, Faye Truman moved her lips and laughed stiffly, "Is teasing me amusing? It’s not funny at all, haha..."

Cindy Sterling didn’t flip out as usual. She patiently shook her head, "I’m asking seriously. If you’ve fallen in love with me, just say it."

"What if I haven’t?" Faye Truman ceased smiling, his face froze for an instant, looking worse than crying.

"Then fall in love with me." Cindy Sterling clenched her fist, after saying this, she closed her eyes to stay calm for a few dozen seconds, then opened them again to look at him.

Faye Truman knew this time he couldn’t keep evading. Relaxing his expression, he pursed his lips and asked, "Why... I mean, why would you like me?"

"You said you’d be responsible for me."

"I said I’d be responsible for your depression. When you went to the hospital for a check-up the other day, it proved you were already better." Although it’s quite possible it could relapse... but he really couldn’t concern himself with that now.

Actually, Cindy Sterling had thought about it; he would give this answer. She wasn’t very disappointed at the moment and decided to continue reasoning with him, "You’ve already lost your chance with my sister-in-law, and to my knowledge, your only pursuer is Hannah Ford. If you could like her, you’d be together by now. So why not try with me? Maybe sparks will fly."

She started in the industry early, has always been engrossed in work. Now at 23, she hasn’t had a single relationship. She really likes this man — the first time they met she found a certain roguish arrogance in him to be very charming.

However, Cindy Sterling didn’t know that the first man a young girl falls in love with often isn’t suitable for her.

Because only over time, with maturation, do they realize that only a man who loves them more has true charm.

Faye Truman got up, walked a few steps to her, and found upon approaching that he couldn’t say a single thing. Turning around, he poured a glass of water, downed it in gulps, and only after wiping his lips did he find a bit of courage.

"I came to the Sterling Family and stayed with you not by choice."

This time, Cindy Sterling was genuinely stunned. This matter was almost the cornerstone of her courage, yet with his words, the rock shattered without leaving any debris. She became a vessel of solitary courage, her impulse rather laughable.

She calmed down for a while, finally sorting her thoughts and tentatively asked, "Did... my brother threaten you?"

Every sound quivered, as if once spoken, they’d be blown away by the wind, conveying a fragile feeling born from excessive caution.

Faye Truman shook his head, "Your brother didn’t threaten me. Instead, he gave me a significant amount of money — enough to buy the hospital where I work. For me, living at your place and accompanying you is just a highly paid job."

Cindy Sterling tried hard to calm herself to listen to his words, but still, a fire burned in her throat. The emotions welling up were forcibly suppressed there, yet she couldn’t control the unfeeling hand squeezing her heart, twisting and kneading it...

She took a deep breath, wanting to clarify this matter, "If my depression never improves?"

"Then I’d have to keep staying with you. Your brother gave too much money, so much that there’s no room for complaint with such demands." Faye Truman smiled helplessly, "Actually, I envy Ethan Sterling a bit. If I had been this wealthy, perhaps Ruby Sullivan wouldn’t have married him." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

Indeed, he just wanted her to know that he could forsake this lifetime because the woman he loves became her sister-in-law.

"Just shut up." Cindy Sterling curled up into the sofa, hugging herself like a wounded cat. She tried hard to prevent the tears from falling, "Leave now; disappear from my sight right away."

"OK." Faye Truman turned and went back to his room.

*

Ethan Sterling was somewhat bothered by the online chatter. Originally meant to support his wife, now it seemed like he was stirring trouble, and he specially booked a luxurious restaurant for lunch with her.

Ruby Sullivan burst into laughter directly after hearing his hesitant thoughts, "Mr. Sterling, since when did you start caring about public opinion?"

Ethan Sterling frowned; he truly hadn’t thought about this question much.

Since his grandmother passed away, he no longer cared about these trivial things. One must know that standing at his height without being burdened by reputation allowed for a carefree life.

Therefore, after such a massive incident at his grandmother’s birthday party, he merely conducted simple public relations. Afterwards, unless necessary, he never clarified anything in any public or formal occasions.

But when did he start to care?

It was probably when he discovered that his bad reputation would affect Ruby Sullivan. He wanted the best for her.

"I’ve always cared." After some thought, he answered seriously.

Ruby Sullivan put a piece of lobster in her mouth, smiling, "Then please, similarly to when you cared before, relax. Being criticized is better than silence, and Cindy’s news had a great reaction. Nirvana gained more popularity too, isn’t that great?"

She thought of the advertisement done payingly, almost wanting to treat Dragon Girl to a meal to thank her properly.

However, Cindy Sterling making such a bold public disclosure was unexpected. But that photo was indeed beautifully taken. She was completely captivated by her smile and the light in her eyes, hardly noticing the large scar on her face.

The moment she saw the photo, she realized it — this is genuine beauty, one that’s ingrained in the marrow.

"Hmm." Ethan Sterling nodded, "We should thank Faye Truman."

"Hey, maybe he won’t be a plastic surgeon anymore and can become a psychologist specializing in saving troubled girls." Ruby Sullivan jested.

Just after she finished speaking, Ethan Sterling’s phone rang. It was Faye Truman.

"I told Cindy about our deal. She’s in a foul mood now. You better come home to check on her; I’ve already been kicked out."

"If anything happens to her, I’ll end you," Ethan Sterling said while already standing up, then hung up the call.

Ruby Sullivan paused for a moment, hurriedly running to catch up with him, "Whose call was it? What’s the matter?"

"I have to go to the old mansion immediately."

Upon hearing this, Ruby Sullivan instantly knew something was wrong with Cindy on that side. Jogging alongside him, she said, "I’ll go with you."

They sped all the way to the old mansion. Faye Truman was still standing at the door, but Ethan Sterling didn’t glance at him, going straight inside.

Ethan Sterling drove too fast. Ruby Sullivan dared not ask what happened on the way but rushed in immediately after hearing from Faye Truman, fearing that Cindy might have an accident.
