Chapter 294: Chapter 294: Julian Lowe Recants His Testimony

In the evening, Ruby Sullivan eagerly discussed her decision with Ethan Sterling in bed, somewhat proudly, "Do you think I should win an award for being the best boss in Celestia or something?"

Ethan Sterling, the angel investor, had only received an IOU note along with a few sweet smiles and a kiss from his wife. From a businessman’s perspective, this deal was a blood-curdling loss.

Now, hearing his wife being so generous to her employees, he looked up from his iPad to glance at her and gave a thumbs-up, "Impressive!"

Ruby Sullivan burst into laughter, "Right, right, I think so too." She lay down to sleep happily, willfully ignoring the strange glint in Mr. Sterling’s eyes.

Ethan Sterling noticed his little vixen’s feigned ignorance but didn’t mind. After all, the money given to her was withdrawn from his personal account, unrelated to The Sterling Group. His money was her money; as long as she was happy, there was nothing to fuss about.

He lay down beside her, pulling her into his arms, feeling that being able to sleep soundly holding the one he loved was the most valuable reward.

The Yates couple, taking the opportunity to visit their daughter, also tried to establish some connections in Ariston, but the results were not optimistic.

The Sterling Group had abandoned The Yates Clan, such a reliable partner, and instead chose to collaborate with a company less than a third of The Yates Clan’s size, which had already negatively affected them. Moreover, with Aidan Sinclair inadvertently issuing a boycott against them, there were now very few people in Ariston willing to collaborate with them.

After a week, the Yates couple had faced many rejections, returning from each dinner party with furrowed brows, pinning their hopes on their daughter’s marriage to Skylar Aldrin.

If Gwen Yates could become the Aldrin Family’s daughter-in-law, even if the Aldrins did nothing, those who wanted to work with The Yates Clan would form a long queue, making it unnecessary to work painstakingly to establish connections as they did now.

However, Gwen did not want to discuss this matter with them; whenever they opened their mouths, Gwen would retreat to her room, closing the door and refusing to come out.

How could she bear to marry someone as dumb as Skylar Aldrin? That would be no different from selling her!

Even if she couldn’t marry Ethan Sterling, it must be someone like Aidan Sinclair, a man who could stand shoulder to shoulder with Ethan Sterling—definitely not an idiot like Skylar Aldrin!

That morning, Gideon Yates went out early to play golf, leaving only Megan Vaughn and her daughter Gwen at home. Megan, afraid of angering her daughter, kept her words in check and prepared a couple of simple dishes for lunch, maintaining a relatively harmonious atmosphere between them.

While eating, someone suddenly rang the doorbell. Megan went to open it and found a young girl standing outside.

Julie Jewel didn’t wait for her to speak, showing her ID, "I’m the officer in charge of the Julian Lowe case, and I need Gwen Yates to come with me to the police station." She bypassed Megan to peer inside, "Gwen, come with me."

Megan froze, "Officer, have you investigated thoroughly? Our Gwen is the victim! That Julian Lowe, he must have taken money to make false accusations, trying to slander our Gwen."

Julie glared at her, "You’re aware that Julian Lowe recanted his statement? I haven’t mentioned a word till now."

"I guessed, I guessed..." Megan’s face turned even more unsightly, retreating to the side.

Gwen glanced at her with a frown, said nothing, and followed Julie.

Unlike last time, Gwen was taken to the interrogation room this time, no longer the victim but a suspect, accused of maliciously slandering Ruby Sullivan.

Upon first learning that Julian Lowe had recanted his statement, Julie also suspected he had taken money from Ethan Sterling, until she found surveillance footage of Gwen wearing a hat and sunglasses delivering money to The Lowe Family, and the transaction of a full three hundred thousand in cash from Gwen’s bank account.

"Speak up, if you tell the truth now, there’s still a chance for leniency." Julie looked at her, feeling exceedingly disgusted, having initially believed she was wronged and was dedicated to getting justice for her, yet the reality was this dramatic!

Gwen looked at her with a timid face, tears falling before she even spoke, "Officer, what do you want me to say? That I was raped by Julian Lowe?"

Julie frowned, finding it hard to believe her words now, "Didn’t you say earlier that you weren’t raped?"

Gwen lowered her head, gripping her hands tightly together, choking, "I was afraid... I haven’t even married yet, nor dated. How...how could you expect me to say something like this?"

Julie pressed her lips, "Are you changing your statement now?"

Gwen shook her head, "No...I don’t want to change...I..." she covered her face, crying uncontrollably.

Julie let out a long sigh, slightly irritated, walked over, and handed her a tissue, "Calm yourself first, even if you speak now, it’s still hard to prove. So much time has passed, evidence has been destroyed, and there’s not even surveillance; filing a case is difficult."

"I know." Gwen was silent for a moment, then continued, "I just want to tell you, I wouldn’t make such a huge sacrifice to slander someone unrelated to me."

"Then why did you give money to Julian Lowe’s family?"

"Because I’m afraid Julian Lowe will spread the word, I...worry about my reputation."

Julie stared at her, unable to judge the truthfulness of her words, "Now Ruby Sullivan has sued you for defamation, and the case has been filed. Technically, having this conversation with you is no longer part of my job. I wanted to help you, so let me ask you again, is what you’re saying true?"

Gwen nodded, "I swear."

"Then you’d better prepare a good lawyer, the evidence now is very unfavorable for you." Saying so, Julie let her go.

On the way back, Gwen thought about Julie’s words, and searched online for the possible penalties she might face. If Ruby Sullivan seized this opportunity to ruin her, she’d definitely end up in prison, and even a mere detention that left a criminal record would tarnish her life forever.

The more she thought about it, the more terrified she became, panicking in the taxi.

"Driver, to...not to The Sterling Group...no, to Plum Creek Road." She quickly changed the destination, finding it necessary to apologize to Ruby Sullivan and have them drop the charges.

However, she was a bit out of luck; Ruby Sullivan had confirmed samples today and went out with Howard to a factory in the afternoon. Though Nirvana was still cooperating with the previous Sterling Group’s proxy factory, it had now become an obscure small workshop, demanding a good discussion with the factory director, and additional materials were also needed to be sourced.

Claire and Tina didn’t know this young lady but seeing that she was quite pretty, inevitably became favorably inclined, suggesting she call the boss to inquire.

It was at this moment that Gwen hesitated; such matters couldn’t be discussed over the phone, and she might just get mocked off, leaving no dignity intact...
