Chubby Mommy: Scheming Daddy, Surrender Now!-Chapter 127: A Bit Too Strict
Ruby Sullivan always thought that giving Honey a complete family would make her happier than before; at least, she wouldn’t be bothered by the issue of her father anymore. Moreover, after moving into the Sterling Family’s house, Rachel Lawson tirelessly watched over the two children, allowing Ruby to focus more on her work and make sure to take care of Seth’s emotions. Unintentionally, she began to neglect Honey.
Honey was a sensitive child, and she could definitely feel these differences very clearly. Yet every night after Ruby finished telling her a story, Honey would always say, "Mom, you need to take care of your health and not work too hard."
The more Ruby Sullivan reflected, the more upset she became, feeling that she really needed to apologize properly to her daughter.
She sighed as she gently rocked on the chair, her brow furrowing with concern.
After returning to Meridia, the pressure was indeed enormous. Honey’s condition, exacerbated by two major accidents, was the last thing Ruby expected and was something she regretted most.
If she had known earlier that Ethan Sterling’s bone marrow was not suitable, she might have chosen to continue living a life depending on each other with Honey. Perhaps Honey would have eventually waited for a matching bone marrow.
But now...
She sighed again.
Clearly, Honey is the person she cares about the most, yet because she didn’t handle her issues properly, she neglected Honey’s feelings. Even though she always wanted to be a good mother, she still committed many mistakes that adults often make.
She looked up at the bookshelf in the study, suddenly recalling many past events.
Ethan Sterling’s study was the best room in the whole villa, facing the family’s small garden. In spring and summer, sitting at the bay window offered a great view. It was a genuine study, with bookshelves nailed directly to the walls, filled with a wide range of books.
It was said that there used to be many books on economics and management, most of which were imported in their original language. After he took over The Sterling Group, he sorted out some, with a few taken to the company, some given away, and others thrown out.
Then, in the cleared space, he placed some martial arts novels he loved but couldn’t read during his youth. In the most prominent spot was a set of hardcover Jin Yong complete works, still wrapped in plastic. It seemed the owner didn’t intend to open them after purchase, perhaps never to open them.
Ruby Sullivan also loved this room. When Ethan Sterling was home, she wasn’t allowed in, but since he was rarely at home, she would daydream in this room when he was away.
Five years ago, she thought she would become a ghost of the Sterling Family, with all her grievances having nowhere to be vented.
Unexpectedly, now she was back in this room, and because of her daughter, she was daydreaming again.
She thought about Ethan Sterling, about herself, and about their childhood.
After thinking through all this, she jumped up from the chair, trying to boost her spirits. She had overcome so many difficult problems already. At least, she didn’t have to worry about Rhonda trying to harm Father Sterling anymore, and Ethan Sterling had shown a stance regarding having children. Clearly, everything was heading in a positive direction; it was just her worrying too much.
She was just about to go downstairs to find Honey when suddenly someone knocked on the door.
Soon, Honey pushed the door open, poked her head inside, and asked somewhat shyly, "Mom, can I come in?"
Ruby Sullivan smiled and welcomed her, "Of course." They exchanged a smile, and Honey took Ruby’s hand to look around the study, finally choosing the bay window to sit side by side.
"Mom, I want to apologize for what happened earlier." Honey lowered her head, her chubby little legs swinging shyly, "Brother Sterling said Dad hasn’t been home for dinner lately. There must be urgent matters at the company. You were working overtime all the time before you went to Meridia, and it must be you squeezed out time to come home and cook for us today. Mom works so hard, I shouldn’t have upset you."
Honey’s organizational skills weren’t as good as Seth’s, although she liked to chatter, she rarely spoke such lengthy and coherent words. Clearly, Seth had a big influence on her.
After she finished, Honey sighed, bowed her head even lower, her double ponytails drooping to her shoulders, "I also apologized to Brother Sterling. I must have made him sad when I said that today, right? But he said it’s okay, he doesn’t blame me." After speaking, she sighed again.
Ruby Sullivan was surprised, Honey’s demeanor seemed somewhat unfamiliar, as if she had become half-possessed by Seth.
"Honey, first tell mom, why do you keep sighing?" Ruby gently stroked her head, truly worried.
Suddenly, Honey burst into tears, choking as she spoke, "I’m a little scared, afraid that Mom and Dad don’t like me, and eventually, even Brother Seth won’t like me."
Children are like this; whoever spends more time with them is whom they like more.
Even though Rachel Lawson watched over the two children, the small details of care were always done by Seth, and Honey was already very trustful of her brother.
Ruby Sullivan’s heart broke seeing her daughter cry, and she quickly held her and explained, "Mom and Dad have never not liked you. Mom was really worried about your health today and didn’t want you to eat too much meat. I promise you, once you’ve had your bone marrow transplant, Mom will cook for you every day, and you can eat whatever you want, okay?"
Honey looked up at her mom, her big eyes still spilling tears, yet she raised her little finger, "Pinky swear."
Ever since she saw the pinky swear gesture on TV, she felt that no matter how unbelievable something seemed, as long as two people hooked pinkies and sealed the deal, it wouldn’t change.
Smiling, Ruby Sullivan extended her little finger, secretly hoping this day would come soon. At that time, she would willingly give up her career.
That evening, Ruby borrowed a science book from Seth, intending to tell Honey about the harms of gaining weight before bed. Honey’s situation was very special; even if not for external reasons, reducing red meat consumption was necessary.
"Mom, don’t worry. I’ll make sure Honey goes out for walks every day so she won’t get fat." Seth handed her the book, suddenly solemnly assuring her.
Ruby Sullivan thought about what happened at the dinner table and apologized to him, "Thank you for helping Mom take care of Honey. In Mom’s heart, you and Honey are the same; you are both my children."
Seth pursed his lips. Although he liked hearing this and believed she truly thought this way, he still wanted to express his viewpoint, "Mom, I know, Honey is the child you gave birth to after ten months of pregnancy, unlike me. That’s why you’d be nicer to me. But Honey doesn’t understand this. You could be a little stricter with me; uh, just a bit." He seemed worried Ruby wouldn’t grasp the right degree, thus he pinched a tiny gap with his fingers, "This way, Honey won’t be scared and think you don’t like her."
Ruby Sullivan watching her understanding son, felt heartache yet again.
Were the two children planning in advance today to let her overwhelm with maternal love?
She hugged Seth, tears truly welling up in her eyes, feeling like she had to exert a lot of effort to swallow them, "Seth, although I didn’t birth you, my feelings are the same. You don’t have to be so understanding; you can also act like Honey and be a bit spoiled. You like this, Mom absolutely feels heartbroken for you."
He heard the tremble in her voice
, paused for a moment, leaning sideways to rest on Ruby’s shoulder, "Mom, I’m really okay. Who asked me to have a silly sister? I just want to make her a bit happier."
Ruby laughed, "Mom is happiest when she has such a thoughtful son. Alright, I’ll go lull Honey to sleep. If you’re still awake, shall Mom tell you a story later?"
Seth shook his head, "No need, you should get some rest after soothing Honey to sleep. By the way, you should call Dad and remind him to drink less. I happened to wake up in the middle of the night yesterday and saw him come back smelling like alcohol." He said this while wrinkling his nose, as if the scent from last night still lingered.
