Chinese Medicine: Starting with Daily Intelligence-Chapter 43: A Turn for the Better
Ten minutes later, Wang the Third’s son, Wang Youhe, was called into the doctor’s office.
Wang Youhe’s eyes were red-rimmed, his voice hoarse. "Doctor, are the transfer papers ready?"
"There’s a new development." Guo Yu motioned for him to sit down and pushed his phone, displaying a research paper, toward him. "A top team in the country just published a new treatment for tick-borne disease, and it uses traditional Chinese medicine."
Wang Youhe was stunned. "Traditional Chinese medicine? It can cure tick-borne disease?"
"It’s stated very clearly in the paper," Miaoli said, pointing to a key section. "The formula is called the ’Clearing Qi and Stabilizing Blood Formula.’ It’s made of five herbs, all of which we have here at the hospital. Judging from the experimental data, it’s highly effective when administered in the early stages."
"But you just said my father is already in multiple organ failure..." Wang Youhe’s voice trembled. "Can we still use it?"
Guo Yu was frank. "Your father has indeed suffered organ damage, so the results may not be as good as in early-stage cases. But compared to the risks involved in transferring him to another hospital, we believe trying this new protocol is the more prudent choice."
"And... it’s the only effective treatment available."
That sentence was the final straw.
Wang Youhe didn’t understand research papers, nor did he know what the "Clearing Qi and Stabilizing Blood Formula" was.
He had a gut feeling that this might truly be the only way to save his father.
Wang Youhe wiped his face and nodded firmly. "Then let’s not transfer him! Let’s treat him with this formula!"
After he signed the consent form, the entire hospital began to operate like a well-oiled machine: 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
The pharmacy department gathered all five medicinal herbs within five minutes and began an emergency decoction.
The nursing department immediately adjusted the monitoring plan, focusing on platelet count and liver and kidney function.
The Traditional Chinese Medicine department, based on the paper’s data, refined the medication schedule and dosage.
When the first bowl of medicinal liquid was brought before Wang the Third, Miaoli silently glanced at the clock on the wall—
Only 37 minutes had passed since Li Xu posted the link to the paper in the group chat.
’Crap!’
She suddenly remembered something.
’I think I forgot to reply in the group chat.’
’And I didn’t call Li Xu, either.’
She hastily pulled out her phone and dialed Li Xu’s number.
"Li Xu! Where are you?" Miaoli’s voice was apologetic. "I was busy preparing the medicine just now and forgot to get back to you!"
Li Xu let out a sigh of relief on the other end. "It’s good you saw the message. I was worried you’d miss it and the patient’s treatment would be delayed. I rushed over to the hospital; I’m on the first floor of the ward building."
"You came?" Miaoli said in surprise. "I’ll come down to get you right away!"
Hanging up, she hurried to the elevator, deeply impressed.
’This patient at our District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has nothing to do with Li Xu.’
’Yet, driven by his responsibility as a doctor, he had come all the way here in person.’
In the first-floor lobby, Li Xu was standing in front of the information desk.
Miaoli walked over quickly. "I’m so sorry to make you come all this way for nothing. We’ve already started treatment according to the protocol in the paper."
Li Xu shook his head. "It wasn’t a wasted trip. It gives me a chance to see the patient’s condition."
’He was curious. Just how effective was this formula developed by Jinmen University?’
As they rode the elevator up, Miaoli briefly explained Wang the Third’s condition.
The elevator stopped on the fifth floor.
The two of them walked toward the ward.
As they opened the door to the hospital room, Li Xu suddenly froze—
Lying on the hospital bed was none other than Wang the Third, the man he had spoken with on the phone just yesterday!
"Uncle Wang?" Li Xu walked to the bedside in surprise.
Wang the Third had just finished drinking the medicine. Hearing a familiar voice, he weakly opened his eyes, just as surprised. "Doc- Doctor Li? What are you doing here?"
His son and wife also looked at Li Xu.
"You know each other?" Miaoli asked, surprised.
Li Xu explained, "A while ago, I went to the market to buy medicinal herbs, ran into Uncle Wang, and bought his Daqing Leaf."
"Oh, I see."
Miaoli’s expression cleared with understanding. She said to Wang the Third, "Uncle Wang, it’s because Dr. Li found this new treatment that we were able to administer the medicine to you so quickly."
Wang the Third tremblingly extended his hand, and Li Xu quickly took it.
The old man’s rough palm was cold and weak, but his grip was unusually firm. "Tha- thank you..."
Li Xu reassured him, "Uncle Wang, there’s no need for thanks. This is what we’re supposed to do. You just focus on resting up. Once you’ve recovered, I actually have a favor to ask you."
When Guo Yu heard that Li Xu had arrived, he came over specifically to thank him.
"We’re indebted to you for providing this paper so quickly," Guo Yu said with sincerity. "Otherwise, we would have had to just stand by and watch the patient get transferred, essentially to wait for death."
Li Xu smiled modestly. "I just happened to see it."
Guo Yu looked serious. "No. Only someone who’s constantly paying attention to professional medical journals could have seen this paper the moment it was published. That shows real dedication."
The three of them stood in the hallway and began discussing the treatment plan.
Li Xu asked in detail about the dosage and monitoring indicators. Guo Yu and Miaoli were surprised to find that Li Xu’s understanding of the paper’s details was even more thorough than theirs.
"Have you studied tick-borne diseases before?" Miaoli asked curiously.
Li Xu shook his head. "Just what I learned in school. I’ve forgotten a lot, but after I found the paper, I’ve been reading it nonstop."
Miaoli nodded. After they’d seen the paper, they had been swamped with consultations and arranging the treatment, leaving them little time to study it.
That was why Li Xu’s understanding of it was more thorough than theirs.
"Doctor Li, if you’re not busy, you could stay for a while. We’re running a test on the patient now, and the results will be out in an hour," Guo Yu said.
"Okay, I’ll stay and see."
"Miaoli, you keep Doctor Li company."
"Don’t worry, Director. Leave it to me."
...
Li Xu and Miaoli chatted in her office.
At the same time, he replied to the concerned messages in their old class group chat.
"The patient has been given the medicine. Preliminary results will be out in an hour."
"@Miaoli, once the results are out, post them in the group."
"No problem."
An hour later, the latest test reports came out.
Miaoli got the lab report. "His platelet count has stopped dropping! Liver function indicators have stabilized!"
"That’s great. The patient is out of immediate danger."
Wang the Third’s wife grabbed his hand, tears streaming down her face. "Old man, you’re going to be okay, you’re going to be okay!"
His son, Wang Youhe, also secretly wiped away his tears.
This matter even reached the ears of the director of the Guanghe District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The director came over personally to inquire about it.
After learning the situation, he laughed heartily and said, "Doctor Li, thank you."
Tick-borne disease is an infectious disease. Successfully treating a patient with an infectious disease was considered a great performance indicator for the hospital. For an individual, it could even lead to honorary and material rewards.
Li Xu stayed at the District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for a while longer, then said his goodbyes and left.
"Li Xu, the District Health Commission and the hospital will probably reward Director Guo and me. When that happens, I’ll treat you to a meal."
Miaoli personally walked Li Xu to the hospital entrance, her face full of gratitude as she spoke.
"Haha, okay, I’ll hold you to that."
Li Xu said with a laugh.
...
On the way back, the group chat was buzzing with discussion.
"The team from Jinmen University’s School of Life Sciences is just too good."
"The Clearing Qi and Stabilizing Blood Formula will soon be famous worldwide."
"Their team will probably receive a commendation from the Ministry of Health."
"Probably? They definitely will! Especially with the country promoting traditional Chinese medicine in recent years. They used TCM methods to solve an infectious tick-borne disease. They won’t just get fame, they’ll get more research funding too."
"After the Clearing Qi and Stabilizing Blood Formula hits the market, their team will also receive a continuous stream of royalties... Just thinking about it makes me jealous."
"Sigh, if only I had been the one to develop this formula."
"Heh, Hu Qiming, in your dreams."
