Chapter 84: She was lost

Following that incident, the confession and clearing up of their misunderstandings, Valerie no longer tried to hide her feelings and was straightforward with Maximus, thus, not doing anything that could get Max angry.

Even if she did, doubt that he would actually get angry because as of late, the only eyes he had on when staring at her were that of love.

He’d also want to jump her from time to time and act like a beast, leaving bite marks all over her body and marking his territory. (He still didn’t go all the way, mind you)

He even started feeling jealous when his mother pulled Valerie to herself.

"Jeez, you’re making me jelly." Tiana said, watching with knowing eyes as Max held on to Valerie tight with his arms around her waist. "Has the storm finally cleared up?"

"Yes, mother." Valerie answered with a bright smile, bright enough to blind her that she wore sunglasses to shade her eyes.

"Good grief, you two are unbelievable. Don’t burn the house with the brightness though. It’s too much if I’ll need to find a new place to stay all of a sudden." She said and they laughed. "By the way, about your sister."

Valerie looked at her. She was talking about her own daughter, Mariam. She was younger than Max by six years and had been studying overseas.

Valerie wondered if it was a sensitive topic to Tiana but it seemed she didn’t worry about her daughter as much as she worked about Max. She didn’t know if to call it preferential treatment but it wasn’t like Tiana didn’t care for her daughter either.

She was just a lot more sensitive with Max because of what happened.

"You said your sister will be arriving tomorrow, right?" Tiana asked. "Will you go to the airport to pick her up?"

Valerie looked at Max who was on cloud nine, sniffing Valerie’s neck and ignoring whatever was being asked of him. She cleared her throat and elbowed him.

"What?" He asked.

"Ahem." Tiana cleared her throat and Max raised his gaze to look at his mother. "I don’t even want to ask anymore." She said. "If it’s too much, your grandfather will go to pick her himself."

"If you knew that, why’d you bother to interrupt me?" Max asked, staring at his mother with scrutinizing eyes.

Tiana shook her head and clicked her tongue a few times. She needed to teach this son of hers that he needed to give his wife space to breathe if he didn’t want her to feel suffocated.

"It seems Jeremy is here." She said and smirked devilishly. "Now, off you go. You need to go to work and make your pretty wife proud."

"Ugh." Max grunted in dissatisfaction.

After the misunderstanding was cleared up, there was this. Max would have to leave for work because he still had his responsibilities to take care of, and could only daydream about Valerie while he worked on loads of files.

He tried his best to finish them so he could go back to her early but they just wouldn’t end, like the more he worked, the more they multiplied, and they were getting on his nerves.

He even attempted to burn them all up one time, frustrated that the workload wasn’t reducing and he wanted to get home and have dinner with Valerie.

It was thanks to Tom’s timely intervention that they were able to save those important documents.

"I’m glad you’ve finally found happiness but do not take it out on the documents." He said with beads of tears hanging at the corner of his eyes.

The expression on his face screamed out, ’I’m not getting paid enough for this shit’.

"You’re the one who ignored them for too long so you have to finish them now." Tom said, hoping there would be no more drama.

Max grumbled but there was nothing he could do about it. He just had to sit back and continue working. This was the path he chose, after all.

"You’re right." He said, twisting his pen on his fingers. "I’ll have to be the kind of man she can rely on for the rest of her life so I can’t slack now." He said.

Tom watched him as he once again regained his fire to finish the workload in front of him.

’Not what I said, but I guess it works either way.’

The next day, Valerie leaned her body on the railings at the top of the stairs, watching Max as he got ready to leave for the airport. He was dressed simply with a hoodie and a pair of jogger pants.

’He looks good in everything.’ she thought and Max looked up to see her staring at him.

Their eyes met and he smiled, raising his hand to beacon her down. Seeing this, she slowly descended the stairs, unconsciously lasciviously swaying her hips till she got down and he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her to himself.

"Were you born with it or are you just doing it to test me?" Max asked quite vaguely and Valerie looked at him confused.

"What’s that?"

He stared at the oblivious look on her face and shook his head.

"Let’s just say playing the Villainess for so long actually made you one. What would you do to me at this point?" He asked yet another vague question.

She was lost. What did acting the villainess have to do with seeing him off?

"Um," she didn’t know what he was asking of her so she simply wrapped her arms around his neck and her expression turned sultry. "I don’t know. Is this right?" She said and slowly fluttered her eyelashes. "Does my husband want a goodbye kiss?"

"Do you need to ask?" He asked, leaving his face closer to hers.

"Um, I don’t know. My kisses aren’t free." She said and chuckled. "But, I could give you a discount." She smiled and his grip on her waist tightened.

"Name your price. I’ll pay whatever." He said and they were just about to lock lips when Tiana hit his back and shook her head.

"Tsk, tsk." She clicked her tongue. "When will you stop harassing your wife? You should be on the road but here you are."

"Mom, you shouldn’t interrupt a couple’s sweet moments." Max said, letting go of Valerie while she secretly laughed. "Besides, if Mariam walks in through that door, don’t you think it’ll save me the hassle of going straight to the airport?" He asked and drew Valerie close again.

"Jeez, when did my son become such an insensitive person?" She shook her head in wonder. "Now, you only have eyes for sweet pretty Valerie. Anything aside from her is worthless, eh? Including me, your mother." She started acting dramatically. "I’m heartbroken."

"Come on, Mom. Don’t make a big deal out of it." Max said, feeling his mother was over-exaggerating. "I’ll go now."

He turned to Valerie and once again pulled her in to get his kiss before leaving.

But just as they locked lips, Mariam walked in through the front door and seeing what was in front of her, the bags in her hand slipped and fell to the ground.

"What the...? What is going on here?"
