Chapter 44: Not wanting to show his other side

"Has anyone seen Valerie from Class Five?" That was Max’s voice.

He was panting like he had run all the way here. Valerie looked up at him. He was Someone she did not expect to see. Someone she did not expect to save her.

Honestly, she had her hopes on Frankie.

Just in case the girls had evil intentions, she scribbled on her desk that some girls wanted to talk to her. So if Frankie came looking for her, she would know that she hadn’t gone home yet and was still in the school building.

Yet, Frankie was not the one who came to her rescue, but rather, it was Maximus, the same guy who was giving her strange feelings.

"I think she’s over there." Someone from the football team said, pointing over at the girls.

They had no idea what was going on and didn’t know that had actually just saved Valerie from being abused.

Max looked over at the end and his eyes met with Valerie’s. For a moment, he thought he had seen a glint of red on her eyes but he was too concerned about what was going on to dwell on that.

He approached them and then caught sight of Valerie’s cheek. It was red like someone had struck her. There was only one explanation for this. He glared at the girls before taking Valerie’s hand in his.

He didn’t want to show his true nature, at least not in front of her. He had been so worried about her, so the least he could do was get her to safety and then decide what to do with these girls.

"Let’s go." He said and she glanced at her hand in his and then his eyes that seems to have only her in them. This feeling... It was coming again.

On a normal day, she would take her hand back but this sticky and sweaty palm actually gave her a sense of comfort and she didn’t want to let go.

"Hey, hold on a minute." Mia said, grabbing Valerie’s hand but Max immediately hit her hand away and glared at her.

"I know what you’re up to. And I’ll make sure to report you for it." He said. His tone was so cold and serious that she felt shivers run down her spine.

The eyes that she wished could look at her warmly at least once were glaring down at her like she was a vermin.

"I...I think there’s been some sort of mis-misunderstanding." she said, sweating slowly dripping down her forehead.

The football guys were already gathering around, wondering what was going on and she chose to deny whatever was on the surface.

"We...we were just talking." She said.

"Hah." Valerie exclaimed and they all turned to look at her.

She had this looming gaze and her eyes were dead set on Mia, as if she wanted to kill her.

"You can try to deny it but it’s all here." She took out her phone and played a part of the recording, starting from when she said the word ’unreasonable’.

"I’ll show you how unreasonable I can be because of the boy I like." Mia raised her hand and struck Valerie across the cheek.

"Why... Why did you hit me?" Valerie asked in a pitiful voice.

"Well, I don’t know, I just did it because I’m unreasonable." Mia snickered. "Ah, why don’t we do this? Since we don’t know why Max likes you, why don’t we give him a reason to not like you?"

"What?"

"Haha, that’s a good idea." Stacy said. "If she looks dirty in his eyes, there’s no way he’ll like her."

"What are you talking about?"

"You girls strip her." Mia ordered. "I think I have a few guys who’d like to take turns with you. Let me call them right away. Max would definitely stay away from you then. In fact, all the guys would avoid you like a plague. Haha, whatever little charm you have won’t work anymore."

She paused the recording and all eyes fell on Mia. They all looked at her in disgust and anger. What sort of girl was she?

Mia’s eyeballs shook in fear. There was so much pressure on her and she just wanted the ground to open up and swallow her. With that recording, she couldn’t even deny it anymore.

"My God, I didn’t think there were girls with such personalities."

"Can she even be called a girl? Who would do such a thing to a fellow girl?"

"She’s so wicked. I can’t believe she wanted to get guys to rape an innocent girl just because of some guy."

"Wait, do you think that’s what she was talking to Dylan about?" Someone asked and Dylan flinched.

"Dude, keep me out of this." Dylan immediately denied it. "We were talking about something else. I didn’t know about any of this."

He was calm in denying it that they had to believe he wasn’t a part of it.

They were all angry about this but the person who seemed to be more and about this was Maximus.

He was so mad that it felt like flames were bursting out of his flesh.

"You wanted to do what to her?" He asked through gritted teeth. "Do you want to die?"

"L-let me explain." She said. "I... I just..." She bit her bottom lip. "It’s honestly not fair. Why do you like someone like her? She’s..."

*Smack*

A slap across her face sent her flying and her mouth was sealed for good.

They all looked to see who it was and saw Frankie. She had just walked in and heard the recording. Her boiling blood could not bear to hear any excuses given for disrespecting Valerie and so she took action.

"If I had used my fists, you would’ve been dead." She cracked her knuckles, glaring deadly at her, and then turned to Stacy and Beatrice.

Seeing this, Valerie finally felt at ease. For a moment there, she thought Maximus would throw a punch at Mia but she clutched his arm tight just before Frankie slapped Mia.

If she hadn’t, he would’ve actually punched her. But why did she care though? It was as if she didn’t want him to get in trouble on her behalf.

Maximus turned his gaze to look at her and she flinched, feeling her cheeks gradually growing red. The tension was snow gone and was replaced with the embarrassment she felt from gripping his arm so tight.

"Let’s get out of here." He said and she obediently nodded.

He held her hand and led her out of there. As they left the auditorium, they passed Lance who waved and Max nodded, thankful that he had told him the location before anything had happened.

"Where are we going?" Valerie asked but Max did not say a word and led her behind the building. There, he pinned her to the wall and kissed her.

She was surprised by the sudden kiss but she did not push him away as he rushed her lips. Rather, she felt something from it. His lips were quivering and his heartbeat was unsteady. It was like he was scared. Scared of losing something.

"Valerie, please." He looked at her with pleading eyes and said, "Be my girlfriend."

She didn’t know why he asked that or if it was the right thing to actually have such a conversation after what just happened but she couldn’t think. And in the heat of the moment with their hearts beating so fast, she agreed.

"Alright."

*******

"Valerie," Maximus called, gently caressing the side of her face, and slowly, she fluttered her eyelashes open. "We’ve arrived." He said and she looked out the window to see they were driving into Stewart’s mansion driveway.

They were finally here.
