Chasing The Vengeful Villainous Heiress-Chapter 38: Max, put me down
Gentle waves crashing, warm sand, and a gentle breeze blow away the tension on your shoulder. It was a quiet beach with no one but them.
Also, this was the first place Max had taken her to in the past. She remembered being honest with him and telling him that the sound of the crashing waves had quite a calming effect on her mind.
"Give me your shoes." Max suggested and she turned around, sliding her hair behind her ear but the breeze just wouldn’t let it be so she ignored it.
"What are we doing here?" She asked him but he walked closer to her and slid his hand into hers.
"What? Can’t you have a little bit of relaxation?" He asked and slowly squatted down to take off her shoes.
It surprised her but she could not exactly retaliate and let him take her shoes off, one at a time.
"Everyone should be busy sulking up to the ’victim’ of your murder attempt while also making preparations for her birthday so I’m sure the scene won’t be very pleasant for you." He said, "You’d be distressed but you’re always calm, so how am I supposed to know when you’re feeling distressed?" He asked and got up, holding the shoes in one hand.
"I’m not distressed." She said, attempting to take the shoes from him but he moved his hand, evading her.
"Sure, you’re never distressed. But I am." He said and smiled. "So I dragged you here to relax with me. So take it that you’re cheering your distressed husband."
He walked on and she watched him. He was helping her again, smiling cheerfully like it was nothing. She gritted her teeth and clenched her fists.
It was a sight that warmed her heart but she could not rule out the possibility that he would suddenly change his personality, get mad, and glare at her like she was the worst person in the world. It hurt when he did that.
It hurt when he looked at her like that but she could not even say anything about it. It was what she brought upon herself. And even now, she did not know how to act that would not make him mad and flare up. She was always trying to obey him, do what he wanted but it seemed none of it was working fine.
Compared to when she was with others where she could easily make up her expressions and actions, it wasn’t really the same for him. She wanted to be genuine but her face wouldn’t move according to her wishes and even then, she shouldn’t be enjoying this. Because this was meant to be torture on her part.
But even when it was torture, he was still treating her this well, smiling and taking her to a place that he felt would make her relax.
She rubbed her arms sadly, staring at him as he strode away from her while she took slow steps.
She just didn’t know what his intentions were or how to make him keep smiling.
"Why are you dragging your feet?" Max suddenly asked as he stopped in her tracks and she stopped as well, answering back,
"The sand’s to blame." She said and he returned to her.
"Well, we can’t have that happening. We still have a long way to go before we get there." He said.
"Where are...?"
He suddenly lifted her off her feet, shocking her.
"The only way is to get you across like this." He said.
Valerie’s eyes were widened. She didn’t expect this. She didn’t expect him to suddenly carry her and not over his shoulder but in front of him as if she was a little girl.
Wait, how was that possible? She was sure her weight wasn’t on the light side.
"H-hey, put me down." She demanded but he had already started walking and giving her a deaf ear. "You can’t carry me like this, you’ll fall. ’WE’ will fall."
She said in all certainty that Max laughed.
"Is that so? Well, thank goodness it’s sand, right?" He grinned and she stared at his face in disbelief.
Really, what was going on in his head all day?
Then, her hand groped his chest, causing her head to blow at the feeling of it. They were hard and sturdy like rocks. She knew his form looked good in the uniform but wasn’t this too much?
She wouldn’t dare move her hand around, fearing that if she moved much, he would suspect her of feeling him up.
But she couldn’t exactly stay still either. She had to get down.
"Max, put me down." She said more forwardly and firmly this time and he paused. His smile fell.
"You just need to take it when I decide to help you. You’re honestly too rigid that it gets on my nerves, Valerie." He said with a frown and she flinched.
His eyes were... angry. Of course, it would end like this. She just couldn’t keep her mouth shut, could she? Even if she said those things because she was honestly worried they would fall, it seems she ruined the mood and got him angry.
Max still carried her but it was in silence. He didn’t say anything and all she could hear were the waves crashing and the wing over her ear.
Finally, they got to the spot where he had prepared a picnic and put her down.
Valerie watched his back. She didn’t know if they would be able to get back the light atmosphere since she had already ruined it. She followed and sat next to him but he didn’t even want to look at her, so she put it up on herself to bring his spirit back, even if it meant saying something embarrassing.
"Max," she called and he turned his head to look at her. Thank Goodness he wasn’t ignoring her. "I... I..." She pursed her lips and pressed her eyes shut. Did she really have to say this? "I thought this before but seeing you today, I have to admit. You have a nice body. Do you... work out?"
Max, stunned by what he just heard, stared at her in disbelief. Did she just... Ask that?
He looked back and then looked behind her. Did Valerie get switched out with someone while he was looking away? There was no way she would ask such a personal and direct question. There was no way... Yet, in front of him was that calm face with a tiny bit of red on her cheeks.
Ah... This was her being genuinely flustered, right?
But he didn’t know she would be interested in his body. That was... New. And unexpected.
Well, this was a sight he hadn’t seen in a while and he felt much better, so he smiled.
"You really want to know if I work out?" He asked, leaning closer and she gulped. "Well, I use the gym every Saturday and Sunday, I run around the park on a normal day before breakfast and..." His face was now right in front of her that she felt the tips of their noses would meet. "...I do a few push-ups every now and then. Does that answer your question?"
"Y-yes." She said. "But... Can I ask for one more thing?"
"What is it?" He asked, genuinely curious. What would she ask this time? He was looking forward to it, and then she said,
"I want to touch it."
Max blinked his eyes.
"Eh?"
Now that was even more unexpected.
