Chapter 154: The car exploded

They got out of the hospital and Valerie finally took off her nose mask, breathing in the fresh air of the atmosphere.

She sighed.

"You good?" Max asked, and she nodded, smiling at him in response.

Max parked his car not too far from the hospital, so they walked a few steps before getting there.

Max was just about to open the door when he paused, feeling something was strange.

There were extra fingerprints on the door handle and they were quite visible. Like, whoever did it wanted them to know the car had indeed been tampered with.

"Valerie, would you mind stepping back a bit?" He asked.

"Yeah, why?"

"I feel the car’s been tampered with." Max said, and Valerie’s eyes widened in shock.

"What?" She looked at the car and then at him.

She didn’t ask how he knew or if he was mistaking it. So many crazy things had been happening as of late, it wouldn’t be a surprise if his car, which he left a few minutes ago, was suddenly tampered with.

It was parked in an open spot but nothing was certain.

"Then we shouldn’t even go near it. Let’s leave it." She said, grabbing his arm, but he shook his head.

"It’s just what I feel. Besides, we don’t know how it’s been tampered with, so for your safety, step back while I take a look inside." He said, but Valerie stubbornly shook her head, refusing to let him do anything dangerous.

"No, Max. A hunch or not, let’s just leave it and have experts come to examine it later." Valerie insisted and Max gave it a thought. He really liked that car. What a waste.

He sighed.

"Alright. Let’s leave it." He said and took out his phone. "I’ll call someone to come take a look." Valerie nodded but still kept her eyes on him.

"Come here, hun, let’s just flag a cab." Tiana said, and Valerie nodded.

So many bad things were happening and so many traps were being set. She couldn’t risk Max taking chances like that. What if it had been indeed tampered with, and there was a bomb? She couldn’t risk losing him.

"Max, let’s go." Valerie said, and Max nodded.

He turned to start leaving and after confirming he was leaving the car as it was, she also started walking away.

They were a few feet apart because Max was a bit slow, typing on his phone. He looked like he was trying to contact someone.

Just then, as Max walked into a ten-step radius away from the car, something triggered the bomb that had been strapped underneath the car, and a beeping sound was heard.

As soon as Max heard it, he turned his head back and saw the red light blinking from underneath the car and his eyes widened.

He quickly faced his front and yelled,

"Valerie, get down." He said, but it didn’t take a second more and the bomb exploded, destroying the car and sending Max flying with the explosion blast.

Valerie’s eyes widened as she stared at Max lying lifeless on the floor and she yelled,

"Max!"

She immediately ran towards him and Tiana did too. The first thing Tiana did was check his pulse, and luckily, he was still breathing, but his heartbeat was low.

Valerie stood in front of them, her eyes widened in doubt at what she was seeing.

"Max! Max, this... This isn’t real." She muttered. "Its... It’s a nightmare. Yes, it’s just a nightmare."

She told herself this, but the fire in front of her, the rapid beating of her heart, and the commotion all around her were as clear as day.

She couldn’t deny it any longer. She couldn’t deny what had unfolded in front of her eyes.

"No!" She yelled. The horror in her eyes as she stared at his body was vivid.

Her entire body began to shake but she tried to calm herself down. She knelt down and slowly reached out to touch his face.

"Stay with him while I get help." Tiana said and Valerie looked up at her.

"How... How are you so calm?" She asked and Tiana said,

"I’m not. I’m just being quick-witted because there’s no way I’d let my son die in front of me. No way." With that, she rushed towards the hospital.

Valerie looked down at Max. He looked so lifeless.

She slowly dropped her head on his chest and listened to his slow heartbeat. He was still alive but... For how long?

No, those thoughts needed to disappear. He was going to be alright. He had to be alright.

"It’s... It’s going to be okay." She said but then saw the blood that was gushing out from his stomach.

The sight of it made her nauseous, and she felt like throwing up, but she managed to contain herself, fighting the churning in her stomach and holding on to Max with all she had.

"It’s... It’s going to be alright, Max. I know it will. I..."

His head was bleeding and so was his stomach. A piece of the car had stabbed him during the explosion.

If that piece wasn’t removed and his bleeding wasn’t stopped on time, he would definitely die.

He would...

Tears rolled down her cheeks. How did it come to this? What did she do to deserve this?

She couldn’t lose him. She couldn’t.

While Valerie stayed with Max, Tiana wasted no time in calling for a stretcher.

Surely, the people in the hospital had heard the noise of the explosion, so as soon as they saw Tiana yelling that there was an emergency, they felt it had to do with the explosion and gave immediate support.

They rolled a stretcher out right away till they got to where Valerie was hugging Max’s body.

"We have to get him to the emergency ward right away. So, ma’am, please let go of him." They said but was so out of it that she couldn’t hear them.

Tiana gently patted her shoulder and said,

"Valerie, dear, let them take Max to get treated." She said, and Valerie raised her head.

"Yes, he needs treatment." She said, loosening her grip on him. "Get him treated, please." She faced the nurses. "Please, save my husband."

"We’ll do our best, ma’am."

They put Max on the stretcher and rolled him inside the hospital.

Valerie managed to stand but her eyes were unsteady.

"Max will be... Alright." She muttered and Tiana held her.

"It’s going to be alright." She said, and Valerie nodded.

But not soon after she nodded, she lost consciousness and Tiana held her tight, preventing her from falling to the ground.

"Valerie. Valerie, dear. Open your eyes. Valerie."
