Chapter 152: Then, should I call Maximus?

Valerie finally made up her mind to visit the hospital and run a real test on her body to make sure she was pregnant.

Max’s birthday was the coming week, and she had to be sure the present she had for him was actually there and not something she speculated on.

"Are you sure you’re okay with this?" Tiana asked on their way to the hospital.

"I’m fine." Valerie said. "We’ll just run a few steps and... It’s not like I’m scared shitless by hospitals. I just... Get paranoid, that’s all. I’ll be okay."

Tiana nodded.

"Alright. But if you change your mind, just let me know."

They got to the hospital and Valerie walked in with a nose mask. She was popular, yes but that wasn’t her only reason for wearing a nosemask.

The smell of disinfectant triggered her so she needed to keep the intake as low as possible. That’s where the mask comes in.

The doctors ran the test after they had succeeded in taking her blood sample. But it wasn’t easy.

As soon as Valerie sighted the syringe, her entire body froze up and she gradually began to shiver.

"Are you okay?" Tiana asked. She was holding Valerie’s hand and felt her shivering.

"I... I..."

"Should we stop?" She asked and turned to the doctor. "I don’t think she can go through with this."

"What’s the matter? Is she ill?" The doctor asked, but Tiana shook her head and wanted to explain that Valerie just had a little past with syringes but Valerie held her, stopping her from going any further.

"It’s... Alright." Valerie said. "I’ll be alright so... Let’s continue."

She was already sweating profusely and she looked like she was short of breath.

Tiana looked at her worriedly. She was there when Valerie passed through those things. But that was just for a moment. After she was transferred to her own tiny ward where all the madness continued, she couldn’t be of much help.

All she could do was exchange small talks with her in hopes that she wouldn’t lose her mind as anyone would do in that situation and bring her bread to fill up a little portion of her stomach.

Other than that, she didn’t do much. She... Wasn’t of any good help, and Valerie suffered.

She watched Valerie shut her eyes as the doctor gently pierced the needle into her skin and drew out blood.

Once it was out, Valerie let out a relieved sigh, panting heavily like one who had been restricted from oxygen for five seconds.

"Are you okay? Do you want to take off the mask?" Tiana asked but Valerie shook her head.

"It... It’s fine." She said.

And all this, she was doing so she could be sure that there was indeed a baby in her stomach and that they were not mistaken.

They walked out of the hospital, hoping to get some fresh air while the doctors analyzed the test samples they had collected.

"What would you like to drink?" Tiana asked as they stopped in front of a cafe not too far from the hospital.

"Just a can of soda would be fine." She said and they both walked in.

Valerie waited for a while but then Tiana came back right away without buying anything.

She took Valerie’s hand and quickly hurried out of the cafe.

"What’s wrong?"

Tiana glanced behind her shoulders and then pursed her lips. It took a while to make and she needed to be sure she was certain before saying,

"Someone’s following us."

Valerie’s eyes widened but she did not look back as experience had told her looking back would only alert the person following them.

"So, what do we do now?" She asked.

"Let’s get the test results and get out of here."

"And the person following us? We can’t just let them go." She said.

"I know." Tiana said and took out her phone. "Max doesn’t know we’re visiting the hospital and if he finds out, he will definitely suspect that something is going on. You don’t want him to know you’re pregnant yet so we can’t tell him."

"So, who are you calling?"

"My dad." She said, and Grampa Leo picked up.

"I get called out of nowhere. Should I expect good news?" He asked but Tiana gave him the opposite.

"It’s not." She said. "Dad, I’m with Valerie right now. We’re at the hospital but I feel someone’s following us."

This immediately got Grampa Leo alarmed.

"Following you?" He placed his fingers on his forehead, not getting things straight. "And hospital? What are you doing there? Are any of you hurt?"

"No, we’re not."

They walked into the hospital’s building and tried all they could to lose the spy.

"Then...?"

"I’ll explain later, Dad. For now, I need your help."

"Then, should I call Maximus?" He asked but Tiana strongly refused.

"Don’t disturb the boy. He’s probably cramped with work." She said and he nodded.

"I’ll send Oscar right away." He said, and cut the call.

But just as he was about to give Oscar instructions, Max walked in.

"Hey Gramps, is Valerie with you?" He asked and glanced around. "Guess not."

"Wait," Grampa Leo said. "I know where she is."

In the hospital, Tiana turned to Valerie and said,

"The test results should be ready by now. Let’s get it and leave right away." She said.

They hurried to the doctor’s office and got the test results.

It was positive. Valerie was indeed pregnant and it was over a month already.

"In the coming months, you’ll feel the baby’s movement." The doctor said to her. "During the first trimester, it’s advisable to reduce the intensity of intercourse to avoid losing the baby, as it is still in a fragile state."

"You hear that, kiddo? You guys need to tone it down a bit." Tiana said, and Valerie darted her eyes aside, pretending to be oblivious to her words.

"And refrain from rigorous activities as well." The doctor added. "If you feel belly aches, come to the hospital at once and get a check up. It’s not normal."

Valerie thought back to the accident. Was that why she felt that churning?

"Beware of morning sickness as well. It varies from woman to woman, but if you’re the type to get disturbing morning sickness, note that you’ll throw up every now and then, and you may lose your appetite for food. Throwing up after a few bites is also normal. But for the sake of your growth and your baby’s growth, you’ll need to eat well and healthily so come to the hospital and get medicine that will help you with it."

Valerie listened intently and nodded at every word the doctor said.

She cared for the baby in her womb and would do anything to protect it, including heeding the doctor’s words.

"That will be all for now." The doctor said and Valerie nodded.

She got up, ready to leave, when she recalled something.

"Um, doctor, I need a favor from you." She said and he looked at her, wondering what she was going to say.

Valerie and Tiana left the doctor’s office and decided to walk around a bit before going out. There was no place safer than a crowded environment.

Soon after they left, someone walked into the doctor’s office and he raised his head.

"Yes? Do you have an appointment?" He asked and the person who walked in, a lady, smiled.

She had a black shawl around her head, was dressed in all black, and huge sun shades covering her eyes well, if not the entire upper part of her face.

"No, I don’t. But..." She glanced back. "I’m related to that lady that just walked out."

"Oh, the one who came for a pregnancy test? Is there something I can help you with?"

"Yes." She got closer. "You see, I’m worried about her. She’s been hoping for a child for so long and even got depressed. Today, she came to the hospital and I was sure it was for a pregnancy test. So, I just wanted to know, did she finally get the child she was looking for?"

The doctor stared at the lady for a while and asked,

"Is that what your whole get-up is all about? If I didn’t know better, I’d mistake you for a celebrity trying to hide her identity while in mourning." He said and the lady chuckled.

"I just didn’t want to let her see me. If she did, she’d get mad."

"You sound nice. But unfortunately, that lady’s pregnancy test was negative. She just ate some bad food and the worms in her stomach were acting up. She’ll be fine after taking the medicine I prescribed." He said with no hint of a lie and the lady floated a bit.

"But she was having growths. I mean, her breasts were getting bigger and..."

"That’s a natural growth for people who have sex recently." The doctor calmly answered again and the lady fell silent.

"That... That’s sad to hear." She said. "Well, I’ll get going now. Thanks a lot, doctor."

As she walked out, her face contorted in anger and she clicked her tongue.

To think she came to this place, only to find out Valerie was not pregnant. What a waste.

The doctor looked at the door and then sighed.

"She was right." He muttered and recalled what Valerie said to him.

"Doctor, I need a favor from you. After we leave, there’s a possibility that someone will come to you and ask about me. Please, whatever you do, do not let them know I am pregnant. My life, as well as my baby’s life, is at stake." Valerie pleaded. "Do not let anyone know I am pregnant."

It was true.

Though he was not obligated to do so, he didn’t mind keeping a secret or two for a pregnant woman. After all, his goal as a gynecologist was to make sure both mother and child were safe before, during, and after delivery.

’If that lady didn’t come in right away, I might’ve just mistaken her worry for a pregnant woman’s paranoia but she did.’ he got up, taking the report that was with him.

He lit it up with a lighter and dumped it in the trash to burn to flames.

"Don’t worry, lady. Your secret is safe with me."
