Chapter 37: The brunch - III

Evelyn did not know what to do. Should she just look away or should she stare at the don? It was really confusing and a matter of life and death because he had not yet asked her to look away nor had he asked her to look at him.

He continued to stare at her.

"Why is she here?" She watched as Salvatore whispered into his mother’s ear who looked back to see who he was talking about before she frowned his way.

"Her? Evelyn?" Alexis chuckled. "Don’t you remember? Your father told you about Carlo bianchi. Evelyn Bianchi, she is his daughter and under your father’s protection."

He grunted out acknowledgement and Evelyn finally managed to look away and at a cupcake. The cupcake was very beautiful. Not only that but it actually had a design over it and there was also some dusted sugar. Such a beautiful cupcake she had never seen.

From here she could still hear what Alexis was talking about because she was not shy or cautious enough to lower her volume.

"You are early. Did you not get the gifts for everyone?"

Salvatore scoffed, "have you ever known me to come without something in my hand for Vittorio and Alessia? Here, this is for you."

She had some rumbling and decided to glance over quickly. Salvatore was giving a huge bouquet to his mother.

"Look at that," Alexis gushed as she looked at it carefully, " it is so beautiful Salvatore. Thank you, baby." Evelyn watched discreetly as Alexis placed a kiss on his cheek before looking away hurriedly.

She could not believe it as now she stared at the cupcake with wide eyes. Someone called Don Salvatore a baby!

A baby!

Was Alexis not aware of the extent of damage Salvatore had caused to countless people?

Evelyn realised that Alexis had married into the family and even a civilian by now would know the extent of what a mafia my family could go to. She, like any other mother, must understand why it was necessary and probably turned a blind eye to it.

Evelyn glanced at Alexis. A quick change came to her opinion. Alexis probably did not know.

She heard footsteps coming towards her and saw Alexis coming with the bouquet in her hands. Was Alexis passing the bouquet to her? Why would she do that?

"Hey," Alexis greeted her again, "do you want to have something before everyone comes? You can speak a cupcake or two then I won’t mind."

Evelyn opened her mouth and licked her lip before shaking her head. "No, no, I am fine." She probably thought of Evelyn as a hungry begger. God!

Alexis chuckled. "The food looks delicious does it not? Don’t you worry, I have had my children sneak in treats all the time." She huffed and reached over to grab a vase. "If you want to have a bite, I have no problem with it but make sure that there is enough left for everyone behind."

Evelyn watched Alexis placed the flowers in the empty vase. She had noticed it before. Why was an empty vase placed on a table? "Why did you place an empty vase on the table?"

"Because he always brings me flowers and since they are fresh, I always place them on the table," Alexis answered with a small smile on her face.

That was nice. Evelyn glanced back to find him already looking at her. She hurriedly looked at the cupcake, the pretty and beautiful cupcake. It should not be eaten. It would be a shame to do so. It looked delicious though.

"Hello!"

Alexis turned around ad hugged the woman, "Nikita, how are you?" Alexis hugged her tightly.

"Good, good," Nikita said as she rubbed Alexis’s back. She opened her eyes and they landed on Evelyn who blushed at the attention immediately. The entire family was weird, to be honest. They looked scary.

Nikita pulled away from Alexis and came closer to Evelyn who just stared at the woman in defenselessness. Why did everyone look like they were going straight for the kill? With Nikita’s cat-like eyes it seemed like she was going straight for the kill and this time, the kill was going to be Evelyn.

"Evelyn bianchi? Nikita questioned as she came closer with an arched eyebrow.

Evely nodded," yes, that’s me." she whispered. She tried to hide her sweaty palms at the attention she was receiving. She gulped.

"Are you married?"

Evelyn quickly shook her head. She was not, not in any way, married to anyone.

"Good," Nikita let out a smile and it scared Evelyn, "you can marry my son."

"What?" Evelyn muttered. Where did that come from?

Nikita nodded, "Dante, my son, would be perfect for you—"

"Stop it," Alexis pinched her arm. "Don’t trouble her." Alexis patted her shoulder, "Just a little more time. My daughter is the only one left to come."

"Where’s Lucas?" Salvatore asked and Evelyn ignored it. If she didn’t look, he wouldn’t be there.

"Oh, him?" Alexis turned around, "He came here last night. Must be getting ready now." She giggled.

Evelyn peeked at the man who glared to the side. Nevermind that, Salvatore D’alessandro was still dangerous even in his house and amongst his family members. She must not look at him. Ignore, ignore, ignore.

"Good morning everyone," Dante walked over but stopped when he saw Evelyn. "Oh, pretty—Hey!" He barked and rubbed the sore spot on his head. "What did you hit me for?"

Salvatore did not reply. He simply walked to the table. Just as Evelyn noticed that he was nearing her, she immediately looked at the cupcake, the beautiful cupcake again.

She watched as a hand came over it and her eyes followed it. Salvatore’s face came over the view as he bit into the cupcake.

He ate, staring at her as he bit into it. The beautiful cupcake that she once admired and he bit into it while staring at her. Evelyn gulped.
