Chapter 202: A red stain - III

"What?" Evelyn muttered under her breath as she felt herself being scrutinized by Michelle.

If he could see the fire in her direction or perhaps have the lazy eyes from Superman, he would definitely kill her on the spot.

Michelle his eyes at her in return. "Follow me to the Don’s office." He sent a curt nod towards Dante before turning around and leaving.

"You heard him." Dante pointed out before he started following Michelle leaving her the only one standing behind.

Slowly, she started to work as well, maintaining a distance of 10 steps at least between Dante and her. The moment his office appeared in front of her, Evelyn could feel her heart pounding so quickly in her chest, that she considered running away and hiding into her room.

She was the last one to enter and when she did, Michelle closed the door behind her, locking the four then inside.

Evelyn stood in the middle of the room and her eyes were on Salvatore whose stare was at the screen in front of him.

"Come here darling," he beckoned her without lifting his eyes from their screens. "Let me give you your answer by the camera recordings."

Still wary of the entire situation, Evelyn slowly moves to stand beside him.

He clicked a button, and there she saw the entire thing unfolds.

The camera was angled at the end of the hallway. It was on the opposite end of where she had seen Salvatore along with the members of his inner circle.

There was nothing there as Evelyn continued to see.. but after sometime when Salvatore fast forwarded the footage, she saw herself coming out of the room and then going over to the edge with the balcony started to to spy on the three because that is what exactly looked like.

It looked like she was listening into their conversation even though Evelyn knew that nothing was audible to her.

"That is all I could find," he told her before he clicked a few more times.

Then on the screen she saw—

Evelyn came back to her room, stepped inside before, maybe it was two seconds that had passed, she came back out screaming like she had done when she had seen the hand, and ran into the balcony where she knew she had found Salvatore.

Her feet took a step back on its own.

"What?" She stared at the scene which Salvatore had allowed to replay on its own because they had asked for a certain footage. "No.." Evelyn shook her head, denying what had happened, what had been shown.

In the video, it was clearly shown that at first had their conversation before going into the room and yelling, to come out and run into Salvatore’s arms.

That was not the truth. She had never entered the room because when she turned around to leave, that was the moment that she had seen the Red handprint making yell and runaway.

So she had never entered the room in the first place!

And to think of eavesdropping on them, their words were not at all audible from the other end of the balcony.

"I will tell you what it looks like," Michelle’s voice interrupted her thoughts. "It looks like you ever heard what we were talking about and just to make sure that you will not doubted, you went to your room and run back to the Don, faking an attack."

He leaned on the back of the door as he continued, "perhaps checking the camera was supposed to make us trust you, but you did not think that we would end up doing it." Michelle smirked, "Did you?"

Evelyn stared at him in disbelief before shaking her frantically. "No!"

"No?" He repeated her words in a taunting tone.

"Ye—No!" Evelyn stammered almost falling into a trap before she caught herself. "That is not what happened!"

Michelle chuckled and ended up shaking his head. "You suggested that we check the cameras and that is what the camera show."

As in, you try to set us up in a trap and you end up getting trapped in it itself.

Evelyn made an uneasy fact about that. It represented the exact feelings that she was feeling inside.

Torn, she turned to look at Salvatore who was already looking at her, scrutinizing her silently with an impassive face.

"I did not do it." Evelyn whispered to him, asserting every word because it was the truth. "I did not overhear any of your conversation. I swear to God, I had gone there for a midnight snack, The chef had baked cookies and I saw three of you three there which is why I walked away and then I saw the Red hand print there and that was the time when I yelled and ran into you!"

The lie easily slipped off her tongue along with the truth and the water down version of the entire story.

That was exactly what happened except the fact that Evelyn had not gotten out of room for a piece of cookie, but because she had had some disturbing news.

She stayed at Salvatore waiting for his reply but he continued to scrutinize have without uttering a word making her panic more on the inside.

"I really don’t understand Salvatore.." Evelyn felt the familiar describing building up inside her out of helplessness and desperation. "It was there and I do not know why the camera shows something completely different.." she whimpered slightly.

How the hell was all of this happening? What was the reason behind this? What game were people playing at?

Salvatore finally looked away. He turned his eyes to the screen and closed it shut, before looking at her and standing up.

"I believe your words Evelyn, I have to consider what the cameras are showing me." Salvatore sighed lightly before he scratched the top of his left eyebrow with his index finger. "However, I will consider what you said. It has been a long night for you and us; maybe you should go back and retire for the day."

It was dismissal in simple words that he had twisted and turned around into beautiful statement.

Salvatore just wanted her to get out of his office while he thought of what she had said.

He did not believe her and that was all she had to know.

****

The moment Evelyn left Salvatore pulled onto another feed, live feed from the cameras, he watched as Evelyn went into her room, looking days out of her mind before the door finally closed.

He did not shut away the feed right away. Her next course of action for going to determine what kind of game was she playing at.

"Salvatore," Dante took his name signifying this was on a personal level, "you have to believe it. Something must be going on otherwise, I do not think she is an idiot o lie at this point."

"She is an idiot who killed Giovanni Rosario." Michelle scoffed. "She is Lucky the underboss saw her there otherwise, neither was she coming out of that town alive nor was her daughter."

When no one intervened and told him to stop Michelle only took it as a sign and continued. "It was obvious that she had been there. What was he thinking of attacking someone, an Ally of her father and her husband?"

"If the Underboss had not covered up the remains, we would be on the brink of a war and she would be the price—"

A little flick of salvatores finger silenced Michelle.

"As much as I understand your concern," Salvatore spoke to words through a clenched jaw, "I would appreciate fucking some silence."

Dante silently moved forward and took a seat in front of Salvatore’s desk. "I understand the need for silence but we need to discuss what happened." He gulped, "she looked.."

"What?"

"Crazy? Deranged?" Dante threw the words out in the open. "I would love to trust the words of a family member but my eyes judge for me. She looked like she was thoroughly convinced of what had happened instead of what was going on in the cameras."

Salvatore had to agree on that. Evelyn looked like she was thoroughly convinced by the fact that this had happened even though, in front of their eyes, it had not.

"It might contradict what I said earlier, but why would she insinuate on checking the cameras? With the way she was so sure and the body language she showed, it did look like she was framed." Michelle added from far away, still standing next to the door.

Even though he did not particularly like the woman that was married to the don, the respect had to be given to her and she was innocent until proven guilty.

"So it might have happened," Dante added from their side. "Then who raised the cameras? Because from what I know, given the technology we use, it is not easy."

Salvatore agreed on that as well. The technology they used, was not easy to have edited out unless needed to.

Also by her body language, it was clear to him that she was not lying.

He sighed before getting up from his chair once again. He needed a drink.
