Chapter 983: Buckbeak

[

Congratulations Contestant Kai D. Stormborn

You have achieved a Milestone

...

Milestone: Ride Buckbeak for the first time

Reward:

— +10% Catch Rate against all Flying-type Magical Creatures

]

...

Wind blasted Black’s face as the Hippogriff flew low over the lake, its foot-long talons brushing against the water.

Then, with a mighty flap of its wings, it gained height, returning to the skies.

Black took a rare moment of respite, bringing his head back to the game. He closed his eyes, patted the magnificent creature, and took a deep breath of the cold wind. When he opened his eyes, they were clearer than ever.

As the Hippogriff circled toward the location where Hagrid was conducting his first class on Care of Magical Creatures in the absence of Professor Villanelle, Black brought the Milestone Notification back.

His eyes narrowed.

The fact that the two Systems rewarded all Contestants individually was known universally.

Forget about the same Milestones, even the same Titles might not hold the same Rewards.

However, it was only now that Black truly understood the depth of that fact, seeing the Milestone and its Reward.

Chaos has stopped awarding me Attribute Points. Black processed. It’s not like the System is not rewarding them to me anymore, but the more my Attribute Points rise above the Set Quota, the less the possibilities of gaining them will become. Hmm... Luck is also a factor. Otherwise, this drastic lessening in Attribute Points-based Rewards should have begun occurring right after I completed my Set Quota.

The total number of Attribute Points Kai had gained after completing his 2nd Set’s Set Quota had already gone beyond 110% of 3rd Set’s Set Quota.

This was such an unprecedented phenomenon that neither Meg nor Red Sun knew of it.

Generally, by the time a Contestant went over +40% to 50% over their Set Quota, either he had died or ascended the Set.

With Kai assimilating his Sets and his unique Privilege of combining the three floors’ worth of Main Missions, he had technically bypassed that limit.

But there seemed to be a limit to even that limit, as was clear by the Rewards’ nature.

The Rewards themselves are not bad, Black thought, dismissing the Notification. It’s more like once a Contestant has hoarded a large number of Attribute Points, the Systems broaden the horizons of Rewards, making them more in tune with the Milestones or Titles instead of turning them Contestant-specific.

A smile surfaced on Black’s lips.

He liked these small moments of contemplation, even if they were a product of his AI mind. Kai had always had an interest in the workings of the two Systems.

With Kai now fully focusing on other crucial tasks, like achieving Bankai, defeating a Timeline-possessed Demon King, and turning himself into a Wand to gain limitless Mana, Black had taken the interesting job on himself.

He also had another job — to take care of Kai’s emotional development.

Emotions were one of the Multiverse’s greatest driving forces, resulting in a splendid rise in power in the most drastic and deadly events.

It was these emotions that had birthed Selfless Breathing, without which Kai could have never created Ad Infinitum.

But it was more common in Prime Characters of timelines.

Still, Kai didn’t want his Ad Infinitum Ability to let him pass on such growths.

That’s why Black kept living the life of a student, with a part of the AI recording and analyzing his interactions, interfering as less as possible.

That’s also why the Ad Infinitum hadn’t suppressed his listlessness, letting him go through emotions like a normal lifeform.

Screechhhhhh!

Black ran his hands through his hair as the Hippogriff dived.

Then, with loud thudding steps, Buckbeak landed on the ground, flapping its large wings.

"There y’re!" Hagrid boomed, lifting Black off the Hippogriff. "I thought Buckbeak wouldn’t let another student ride him after Harry. How was it?"

Arlen Black, third-year Gryffindor student, patted his clothes and smirked. "What’s so special about Harry?" he grinned. "A stupid mark on his head? I’ve got that too, you know."

The eyes of Harry, Draco, and Ron, who were hearing him speak, suddenly lit up, a wide grin flashing across their faces.

"There he is!" Draco hissed. "Who knew riding a stupid chicken was all he needed?!"

"I do regret one thing..." Black said, walking toward them.

The boys exchanged glances. "... What?"

"Not naming Uncle Black — Grim."

Ron and Draco laughed, holding their stomachs, Harry’s lips twitching next to them.

"How long have you been holding it in?" Harry asked, grinning. "Is that why you had been sulking since morning?"

Black’s brows raised as Harry took a jibe at him. "Nice..." he praised. "You are slow at it, but you are making progress. A few more years and perhaps Dumbledore will replace Peeves with you..."

...

Hagrid couldn’t tell tail from head as he saw the boys making fun of each other.

But Harry was laughing, and that had always been a good sign. So, he fed Buckbeak and then headed toward the other children, who were already interacting with their Hippogriffs.

Hippogriffs had gained immense popularity after the Battle of Legends.

The Ministry of Magic had even made it compulsory for all students to learn how to ride at least one Magical Creature that was good at escaping. For Hogwarts, it meant that they could put the herd of Hippogriffs Hagrid had been raising in the forest to good use.

Hagrid walked toward Hermione and Daphne and found the latter gently patting a Hippogriff. "Professor Villanelle told me that ye would be good at it, but..."

"But?" Daphne lifted her right brow.

"Y’re marvelous!" Hagrid praised, Hermione smiling next to him. "So... how’d I do? How was me first class?"

The girls shared a nervous glance, trying not to remember the monster books biting students as Hagrid had forgotten to tell them how to open them safely.

"It was great, Hagrid!" Hermione said hurriedly. "You will be a great Professor!"

Hagrid’s chest swelled in pride.

Not far from them, Pansy Parkinson gnashed her teeth.

"Great Professor, my foot!" she hissed, Crabbe and Goyle stupidly nodding next to her. "If that muggle bitch can tame a chicken, then so can I!"

She rushed past Hagrid, Hermione, and Daphne, heading toward Buckbeak, making sure that Draco was watching her.

"I bet you aren’t dangerous at all, are you?" Pansy shouted at Buckbeak, rolling a lock of her hair and catching eyes. "You great, ugly brute!"

Hagrid’s face paled.

It was already too late.

Buckbeak’s steely talons flashed.

In the next moment, Pansy was down, blood pooling around her, darkening her black robes.
