Chapter 49: Chapter 57: Getting Tough

Jane Sampson’s face was flush with embarrassment. How could she forget such a humiliating experience, and yet why did others remember it so clearly?

Old Master Black glanced at Jane Sampson, who had calmed down again, and chuckled, "Just now you had the guts to complain, so why don’t you have the courage to let me help you get it back? A girl like you, with such little courage, deserves to be bullied. Against him, you need to stand your ground. He can’t hit you or curse you. If you stand up to him, what can he do to you?"

Jane Sampson was taken aback, wondering why Old Master Black was suddenly talking to her about all this.

Was he teaching her how to resist James Black, the overlord?

What to do? She suddenly felt that Old Master Black made a lot of sense.

However, as logical as it might be, when she actually faced James Black, she still felt scared. It wasn’t a fear of James hitting or yelling at her, but a fear rooted deep within, a lingering emotional shadow from her childhood.

Some people don’t need to lift a finger or raise their voice to dominate others. Their mere presence can be overpowering, suffocating others with their aura.

Clearly, James Black was one of those people.

Seeing that Jane Sampson remained silent, Old Master Black shifted the topic back to the matter of her mobile phone.

After thinking for just a few seconds, he gave Jane Sampson a tactic, "That kid was raised entirely by my hand. I understand how he operates. Let me tell you, if you want your mobile phone back, following him around won’t do any good. His car key is in the entryway; take it to the garage, open the car, and search inside. Maybe your mobile phone is in the car."

After speaking, Old Master Black suddenly burst into laughter, "Go on down, I’ll call James Black up here to help stall him for ten minutes."

Jane Sampson uttered a "huh" and then looked back three steps at a time as she walked out. Seeing Old Master Black’s stern look return as he sat back down without a smile, she went downstairs, filled with curiosity.

Indeed, as soon as she went downstairs, James Black was summoned to the study by Elder Black. Once James entered the study, Jane Sampson quickly went to the entryway, snatched his car key, and dashed toward the garage.

The garage was just in the corner of the courtyard, and she spotted James Black’s car at a glance. Unlocking the car, she started searching from the driver’s seat. She didn’t need ten minutes—within two minutes, she found her mobile phone under the tissue box on the ground.

Having retrieved her precious mobile phone, Jane Sampson didn’t dawdle. She locked the car, returned to the house, placed the key back where it belonged, and then scampered back to her room.

After thinking it over, Jane Sampson closed her room door and sent a text message to Old Master Black, informing him that she had found her phone. She also complimented him on his clever strategy, and sweetly thanked her grandfather in the text message.

This was the first time Jane Sampson had realized, after knowing Old Master Black for so long, that he could be so endearing. The stern, untouchable image of Elder Black in her heart seemed to instantly change into that of an adorable old man.

James Black was unaware of the reason behind Old Master Black’s sudden hearty laughter after glancing at his mobile phone. Because of that laugh, all the wrinkles on Old Sir’s face became prominent, yet he held the phone, laughing so hard he could hardly close his mouth.

"Alright, I’m done with this game; I’m going downstairs to watch TV," Old Master Black, putting his phone into his pocket, stood up, leaving James Black and the chess game behind as he cheerily went downstairs.
