Who was dawdling up to the cashier’s counter, then looking around anxiously?
It wasn’t her, was it?
Jane Sampson hadn’t said a word when James Black hummed again softly, completely dumbfounding her.
"What are you humming about?" Jane mimicked James’s tone from just now as she asked in return.
James just breathed out softly without answering, his gaze moving away from Jane’s face and landing directly on the display shelf next to them.
Jane looked in the direction of James’s gaze once more and, with one glance, her heart leaped into her throat!
"You can’t buy that!" Jane almost sprinted over to push James aside, baring her teeth at him with a very fierce expression, "You can’t buy that! You can’t buy that!"
"What’s all the fuss about?" James was stunned by Jane’s sudden explosive temper, he lifted his hand to press down on her head, pushing her face downwards, and then gently led her forward to see what she was forbidding him to buy.
James glanced at the shelf.
Oh, it was condoms.
The last time he had inadvertently taken the ones he bought at the supermarket back to the guard team’s dormitory, they were still there.
Seeing Jane’s up-in-arms demeanor, James lightly curled the corner of his mouth, but Jane only grew angrier when she saw James actually smiling.
"I’m like this and you’re still thinking about beastly things?" Jane pointed to her right hand.
"Mm." James didn’t tease Jane anymore, his hum was an agreement, and that quieted Jane down. Then she finally stood back at his side.
James didn’t explain, though his gaze had been on the shelf, he hadn’t been paying attention to what was on it, his mind was on something else.
"You forgot about me just now, didn’t you?" James’s tone was unfriendly, addressing the matter he had been pondering, "So, you were planning to pay with Kane Forest previously and leave together, right?"
Jane felt her heart suddenly suspended again.
Settling scores after the fact?
She slowly turned her head without uttering a sound.
It was true, but, she didn’t dare say it.
Just thinking about the sight of James’s cold face at the cashier’s counter, Jane still found him terrifying at that moment. His eyes were dark and gloomy, as though knives could fly out from them. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
"Heh, Jane Sampson, you’ve got some nerve now," James said.
"I—haven’t," Jane’s denial came out weak.
James scoffed in response, "Little swindler."
"..." She was also feeling pretty hopeless, okay? It’s not like she wanted this, okay?
So it was her fault?
The supermarket was crowded that weekend morning, so it took a while for the two of them to pay and leave in line.
With a big bag full of stuff, James effortlessly picked it up with one hand, making Jane envious of his strength. If only she had that much strength, she could go to the supermarket alone without worrying about not being able to carry home too many snacks.
After finding the car, James directly took the stuff to the car trunk and placed it there before walking around to the driver’s seat.
Jane was already sitting next to him, from the moment he got into the car until he started it, then arriving downstairs at the home building, Jane was staring at him the whole time, yet she never said a word.
James’s face remained expressionless, only turning his head to glance at Jane as he got out of the car, waiting for her to catch up before pressing the elevator button.
"James, are you mad at me?" Jane hesitated all the way before finally speaking up.
"No." James answered quickly.
