Peter Gingery felt defeated after seeing Julie Sampton put on that ’don’t bully me’ pitiable expression again.

Julie Sampton moved, but not to leave.

Especially given James Black’s clear expression of dislike towards her.
Peter Gingery felt that if he stayed there watching a fool go mad, he might get infected too, so he left without paying any more attention to Julie Sampton, who was glaring at him at the doorway.
