Chapter 93: Chapter 83: Designated Assignment

After hanging up, Chen Chuan said, "Auntie, it looks like I can’t stay for dinner. My teacher needs me back at school."

Yu Wan quickly replied, "Go take care of your business. I’ll be here at home, so don’t you worry."

Chen Chuan grunted in acknowledgment. He got his coat and put it on. Yu Wan came over to straighten it for him, tidying it up before saying, "Chan’Er, you be careful too."

Chen Chuan nodded, put on his hat, and walked to the door. "Auntie, I’m leaving now. I’ll come for dinner on my next day off." With that, he pushed the door open and left.

He grabbed his bicycle from the courtyard and rode straight back to school.

When he arrived at the dormitory, he saw Cheng Zitong standing in front of a car, waiting for him. "You’re here," Cheng Zitong said. "Get in. We’ll talk inside."

Chen Chuan immediately got in. As soon as he sat down, he noticed a radio on Cheng Zitong’s driver’s seat, which was playing a follow-up to the news bulletin from earlier.

After robbing the bank, the criminals had been retreating, engaging in a fierce firefight with responding Patrol Officers from the Patrol Bureau. There were casualties on both sides. The gang had now withdrawn outside the city, with the Patrol Bureau in pursuit. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

Cheng Zitong didn’t start the car. He listened for a moment before saying, "That’s Fang Dawei’s crew."

Chen Chuan had his suspicions, and this confirmed them. He asked, "Robbing a bank? For money, or as a distraction? And why rob a councilor from the Advisory Bureau? Is there something they want there?"

Cheng Zitong said, "You’re right. The ones who robbed the bank were most likely a diversionary team from Fang Dawei’s crew, meant to draw the Patrol Bureau’s attention.

Councilor Fang’s private residence has something they want. The councilor has recently been involved with the approval process for a batch of illegal drugs. Plus, his home security also uses Implants. That crew must have gone there for the Anti-Differentiation Medicine."

Chen Chuan thought for a moment. This was likely a consequence of Scarface’s capture. ’With that connection severed, no one was supplying Fang Dawei’s crew with the medicine anymore, so they had to resort to desperate measures.’

These guys really were desperados. Robbing a bank and then raiding the residence of a councilor from the Advisory Bureau—that would cause a massive stir.

Cheng Zitong said, "I called you back to tell you this not just because you were on this case before. I’ve received word that the Administrative Affairs Hall is determined to corner Fang Dawei’s crew this time. Because of that, the review committee will likely designate this as an assigned mission for the Weapon Permit."

’No wonder,’ Chen Chuan thought.

The selection test assigns designated missions based on important events in this city or others. These missions aren’t mandatory; you can choose not to participate and wait for the next one. They come up once or twice a month until the six-month evaluation period ends.

Of course, if you accept and then decide you aren’t capable enough, you can still back out. However, you will then be barred from participating in any future tests for the Weapon Permit.

Cheng Zitong continued, "Based on their past performance, several members of Fang Dawei’s crew likely have military-grade Implants. They’re armed not only with guns but also with Protective Clothing. They didn’t even lose ground in a firefight with the Patrol Bureau near the bank. They’re exceptionally difficult to deal with. If this really becomes an assigned mission, it won’t be easy to complete."

Chen Chuan said, "Teacher, I’ve been meaning to ask, where did they get those Implants? And the guns—someone must be supplying them, right?"

Cheng Zitong shook his head. "We can’t be certain at the moment, but there is one possible explanation for their origin..." He paused, then said gravely, "A resistance organization."

"A resistance organization..."

Chen Chuan nodded. That organization had been around for many years. It was said to operate outside the city, but it also had secret strongholds within, dedicated to sabotage and overthrowing the Dashun Government. They often attacked key departments and high-ranking officials, and they supposedly had a strong presence in Central City as well.

If it was that organization, they would indeed have both the means and the motive to do so.

Cheng Zitong looked at him and asked, "So, what are your thoughts? If this becomes an assigned mission, it will undoubtedly be very dangerous. Are you willing to accept it?"

Chen Chuan replied seriously, "Teacher, I am not afraid. If this is the assigned mission, I am willing to accept."

Cheng Zitong said, "Good. Let’s wait a little longer; there should be a decision soon. By the way, go up and get your blade. If this becomes an assigned mission, you’ll be granted a temporary weapon authorization for its duration. That blade of yours might finally come in handy."

Chen Chuan’s spirits lifted. "Understood." He immediately got out of the car and took the elevator to his dorm. In his bedroom, he took down the Snow Monarch Blade from its rack, unsheathed it a few inches to inspect it, then sheathed it again. After a moment’s thought, he grabbed a shoulder bag, packed a few things he might need, and quickly went back downstairs.

As he exited the dormitory building, he saw someone talking to Cheng Zitong. The person handed a file to his teacher, they shook hands, and then the person left.

Chen Chuan walked over. Cheng Zitong looked up and said, "The documents are here. Just as I thought, the committee has designated it as an assigned mission." He handed the file over. "Take a look. If you have no objections and you’ve made your decision, sign it. I’ll have someone take it back, and then you’ll be officially part of this mission."

Chen Chuan took it. The document stated that those who accepted the assigned mission were required to cooperate with the Patrol Bureau in capturing Fang Dawei and his accomplices. He asked, "Teacher, if it’s an assigned mission, we won’t be the only ones on it, right?"

Cheng Zitong said, "The Patrol Bureau will certainly be cooperating with some private contractors. As for our school, this assignment comes from the Administrative Affairs Hall via the review committee. Any student who previously applied for the Weapon Permit can accept it. However, to avoid stepping on each other’s toes, you’ll need to work with the senior students who have also accepted this mission.

The review committee will grade each of you based on your performance during the operation. It doesn’t matter if your score isn’t high enough this time. As long as the mission succeeds, you’ll get another chance."

Chen Chuan understood. He signed the document, and seeing that a seal was also required—which he had brought with him—he took out his personal seal and stamped it before handing the document to Cheng Zitong.

As the supervising teacher, Cheng Zitong also signed his name and stamped his own seal on it. Then he said, "I’ll go submit this to the review committee. You head to the main auditorium and rendezvous with the senior students who are also participating in the mission."

Chen Chuan nodded to show he understood. He got out of the car and walked alone to the main auditorium at the front of the campus. Inside, three senior students—two men and one woman—were already waiting. Each of them carried a preferred weapon: the two male students had a bow and arrow and a short-barreled gun, respectively, while the female student carried a special Protective Umbrella.

When they saw Chen Chuan walk in carrying the Snow Monarch Blade, they looked a little surprised. One of the male students asked, "I don’t recognize you. You must be a new underclassman, right? What, you’re also joining this assigned mission? Pretty bold, aren’t you?"

The female student said, "It’s only once every three years. If he doesn’t take the test this year, he won’t get another turn. Since he has the chance, why not give it a shot? Maybe this underclassman has what it takes."

The first male student said dismissively, "What’s the rush? We’re from the Military Combat Department, so we have to get our Weapon Permits as soon as possible. If you’re not in our department, you can just take your time with the tests."

The other male student said, "You guys really don’t know who he is? This underclassman is no joke. Remember that new student who put Zhongwu in a vegetative state at the start of the year? That’s him."

As soon as he said that, the first male student’s expression changed slightly, and the female student also looked at Chen Chuan in surprise.

They knew all too well how formidable Zhongwu was. They would never be able to beat him without weapons. Yet a monster like that had been beaten into such a state, bare-handed, by a new student. That was impossible without innate talent.

’It was no wonder he had the confidence to apply for a Weapon Permit.’

Now, they dropped their previous teasing and joking demeanor, their expressions turning serious and solemn.

Just then, footsteps echoed from outside, and a woman with short hair and a stern expression walked in. She looked to be in her early thirties and was dressed in a foreign-style woman’s suit and wore glasses. Although she had fine features, her rigid, formal bearing ruined her natural beauty, giving off an unapproachable and unsympathetic air.

Following behind her were two more senior students.

She motioned for the two students to stand at the front and then began to speak. "I am Han Guo of the review committee. You may call me Member Han. I am responsible for recording and evaluating your actions on this mission. I must remind you: don’t expect to win my favor during the operation. I’m not the only one recording you, so such attempts are meaningless.

I will ask this once: does anyone wish to withdraw? It’s not too late. Your forms can still be pulled before they are officially filed with the committee."

No one in the room spoke. Everyone who had come here today was already mentally prepared. Their decision hadn’t been made in the heat of the moment, so of course, none of them would back out at the last minute.

"No one, then." Han Guo nodded. "In that case, we depart now."
