Chapter 50: Chapter 41: Advisor

Chen Chuan considered it for a moment. He believed it was possible for Exam Hall 4 to be affected at the time, but not necessarily the other halls. ’This must have been deliberately pushed by some people in the school’s Upper Layer.’

Thinking back to what happened that morning, he was able to deduce a few things.

Shen Shao said, "If you ask me, all the candidates who came after you should be grateful to you."

Chen Chuan, however, shook his head. "I only do what I want to do. Being able to stand there was their own choice, and passing the re-examination was a result of their own persistence."

Shen Shao’s interest was piqued when he heard this, and he looked Chen Chuan over. He found himself admiring his junior.

’To be honest, if I’d done something like that, I’d be walking on air by now. But Chen Chuan is so calm. It’s a bit too low-key for my taste, but I can’t help but admire him for it.’

Shu Han, however, thought for a moment before saying seriously, "Chen Chuan, if you want to go far in your combat training, your next step should be to carefully select a good instructor."

Chen Chuan nodded, showing he understood. He’d already learned from the pamphlet that courses at Wuyi Academy were broadly divided into three types: public lectures, instructed courses, and invitational courses.

Public lectures were open to both A-class and Class B students. Invitational courses were only for select students who excelled in their studies or had already built a reputation for themselves, though the conditions for these varied—sometimes they were restricted, and sometimes they were open.

But the instructed courses were the most distinct of all. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

The academy assigned an instructor to each A-class student, who would be personally responsible for that student’s guidance. A student’s ultimate success was heavily dependent on their instructor, and this was one of the main distinctions between A-class and Class B students.

Of course, instructors sometimes took on more than one student. They could choose their students, and students could choose their instructors. It wasn’t a fixed relationship; it wasn’t even uncommon to switch instructors after a certain period. After all, modern combat had long since moved past the traditional master-disciple model. It was all about drawing from various sources to shore up one’s weaknesses.

He said, "Senior Brother Shu, I don’t know much about the instructors. Do you have any recommendations?"

Shu Han was an upperclassman, after all, and the senior assigned to guide him, so he was definitely more knowledgeable in this area.

Shu Han said slowly, "Of course. I know an excellent teacher you should look for. He’s currently at..."

But Shen Shao cut him off. "Shu Han!"

Shu Han looked over and saw Shen Shao’s serious expression. Shen Shao said, "How Junior Chen chooses is his own business. We shouldn’t be telling him what to do. We just need to give him the relevant information about the instructors."

Shu Han took a breath. "You’re right." He thought for a moment. "As for instructors, I personally think there are three good options.

"First is Master Qiao, Qiao Linhu, who is currently retained by the Military Combat Department.

"He’s the grand-disciple of the first principal, Cheng Yunbai, and a martial brother to our current Principal Yan. However, his studies lean toward the old martial arts, and he doesn’t think much of the new styles. It’s extremely difficult to get his personal instruction. Even if you enroll in his course, his own disciples will be the ones teaching. You’d have to truly earn his favor to be accepted as an inner disciple. I recently heard he found a good student, so while the chances of getting his direct guidance are slim, they aren’t zero. If you’re determined, you could give it a shot.

"The second instructor is Sun Yunchun, a lecturer in the Freestyle Martial Arts Department. His personal skill is immense, and he’s ranked near the top of the department. He’s proficient in all sorts of combat techniques with almost no weaknesses, and he really knows how to develop students. Many of the best A-class students over the past decade have come from under his wing. Plus, he’s excellent at networking, so even if he’s not the right fit for you, you can still build a lot of connections through him.

"The third instructor is Yan Xiaojing. He’s Principal Yan’s grandson and the star pupil of Manager Gao from the Recruitment and Preparation Department. He’s an expert in the Military Combat Department, especially skilled with the long spear, but he’s also proficient in Freestyle Martial Arts and Capture techniques. He’s not much older than us and isn’t bound by tradition, so he might be the easiest to get along with."

At this point, he turned to Chen Chuan. "The academy has four major departments: the Freestyle Martial Arts Department, the Wrestling Takedown Department, the Capture Department, and the Military Combat Department. We’ll skip the minor ones for now. The department with the most momentum right now is Wrestling Takedown. For certain reasons, it’s flush with resources, attracts a lot of excellent students each year, and is very powerful. Zhongwu, for instance, is a famous student from the Wrestling Takedown Department. For that reason, I suspect you probably won’t choose to go there.

"As for the Capture Department, it focuses mainly on joint-locking techniques. Like the Military Combat Department, it’s one of the most popular choices for female students. The instructors there are actually pretty good, but most of them are highly specialized in one area and aren’t as well-rounded. Still, the best choice is the one that suits you. In any case, you can get the files on all the instructors just by asking the dorm manager."

Shen Shao added, "The two of us are currently studying under Teacher Chi Youfu of the Freestyle Martial Arts Department. He’s a very decent person. We can help with a recommendation if you need one. And while the Freestyle Martial Arts Department is less structured internally, it’s the largest department in Wuyi. The head of the Affairs Office is even a former instructor from our department."

Chen Chuan thought for a moment. "Thank you, Seniors."

Just then, their food from the cafeteria arrived. The portions were huge, and each of them also received two complimentary tubes of Nutrition Paste. The three of them said no more and dug in.

After the meal, Chen Chuan asked, "By the way, Seniors, do you know where the academy’s apothecary is? I want to buy some Training-Opening Powder for a friend."

Shu Han said, "To get any medicine from the academy’s apothecary, you need an approval slip from your instructor. So, Junior, you’ll still need to find a suitable instructor first."

Shen Shao chuckled. "See? This is why having an instructor is so important. Take assigned missions, for example. If your instructor has connections, they can find plenty for you. But if you pick a bad one, they might just give the assignment to someone else if they don’t feel like it, or they might not have any resources to help you in the first place."

Chen Chuan nodded. "I understand." ’Looks like I need to sort this out as soon as possible,’ he thought.

After leaving the cafeteria, the two seniors gave him a tour of the campus, familiarizing him with the layout and various locations before they parted ways.

On the way back to the training grounds, Shu Han suddenly asked, "Don’t you think he’s a lot like Senior Brother?"

"How is he like him?" Shen Shao said. "I think you’re obsessed."

"I’m not," Shu Han denied. "Actually, when I first heard about this junior and people started comparing him to Senior Brother, I was dismissive. But after spending time with him today, I feel like waiting all morning for him was worth it."

Shen Shao shook his head. "He has his own path. What’s there for us to worry about? He is who he is, and Senior Brother is who he is. They’re not the same person at all, so don’t get worked up over nothing."

Shu Han sighed. "You’re right, we’ll have to wait and see. We’ve only just met him, after all. We don’t know what he’s really thinking yet."

Shen Shao said teasingly, "If you’ve got this much free time, you might as well find another girlfriend. Or go win back the one who rejected you. Oh, right, you were the one who rejected her."

Shu Han suddenly gritted his teeth and started rolling up his sleeves. "Looks like you and I are going to have to go a few rounds today."

There were no classes in the afternoon, as the time was set aside for new students to familiarize themselves with the campus, so Chen Chuan returned to his dormitory building after his tour.

He found the dorm manager and requested the files on all the instructors. He then took the elevator back to his room, where he first unpacked and arranged his belongings. Once finished, he stood by the floor-to-ceiling window and slowly leafed through the documents.

Shu Han and Shen Shao had already given him a pretty detailed rundown. ’I’ll just try applying to a few for now,’ he thought. ’I can always switch later if they’re not a good fit.’

So he returned to his desk, filled out a few application forms with a pen, then walked to the internal delivery box outside his door and dropped them in. The dorm staff would collect them later and deliver them to the respective instructors, who would then make their decisions.
