Celestial Human Diagram-Chapter 147 - 131: Camp 2
He, Ren Xiaotian, and Wei Chang’an had discussed it and concluded that this person was likely on par with Duma. As for someone a tier higher...
After all, the entire country of Maka had a population of just over a million. Yangzhi City, along with its six surrounding counties and peripheral towns, had a population of over ten million—ten times that of Maka. The average standard for a Wuyi instructor was around the Second Limit, and many instructors and assistants couldn’t even reach that level.
After all, how far one could advance depended on talent. Without it, no amount of strenuous training would allow most people to break through their limits. Only a sufficiently large population could produce a sufficient number of talented individuals.
Therefore, anyone of a higher caliber would be considered a national treasure in Maka. The loss of even one would be significant, so it was unlikely they would be sent to another country for such a mission. Furthermore, once a Fighter of that level put on Protective Clothing and armed themselves, their destructive power would be immense. The moment they set foot on Dashun soil, they would undoubtedly draw attention.
In truth, even if someone like that did show up, they wouldn’t be able to withstand a Crushing Rifle, so there was no need to be overly concerned.
The road conditions in the wasteland weren’t good, and they also had to avoid other roaming convoys. As a result, the team drove for over three Hours before finally nearing their destination.
The outpost had a wide, open field of view, and the sound of vehicles carried clearly in the night air. So, as they drew near, everyone disembarked ahead of schedule. They parked the vehicles in a concealed location, leaving two technicians to stand guard while the rest proceeded on foot under the cover of darkness.
The wind howled across the wasteland, kicking up sand and fine gravel. Everyone donned scarves and masks. After they had stealthily crept closer, a camp finally came into view.
As planned, Ren Xiaotian and Wei Chang’an split off to scout from two other directions. Chen Chuan, meanwhile, took out a pair of binoculars and began his own observation.
He saw that the camp’s structures were scattered about haphazardly. The camp was situated on high ground, however, making it impossible to see the entire layout at once. Several bonfires burned near the entrance, and lights powered by algae-oil generators dotted the darkness like faint stars.
The camp was surrounded by winding trenches. Just inside them was a layer of rope nets adorned with various metal scraps. Two tall, semi-open watchtowers stood on the north and south sides, while two shorter guard towers flanked the entrance. He could occasionally see figures moving about, presumably the guards on patrol.
After observing for a while, Ren Xiaotian completed his circuit and returned. He reported to Chen Chuan, "Both armored vehicles are here. Looks like everyone’s inside; they haven’t gone out."
Chen Chuan nodded.
’Normally, this would be the peak activity time for an armed group like this, with only a small number left to guard the camp. If that had been the case, it would have been simple to just pick them off individually.’
’The current situation wasn’t surprising, though. If they had something important to do in the next day or two, they certainly wouldn’t go out looking for trouble. Staying in the camp was the logical choice.’
A direct assault on this kind of camp was out of the question; they didn’t have the numbers. Their only recourse was to sneak in close and launch a sudden attack, which would play to their strengths.
Before that, however, they needed to eliminate the watchtower guards.
Once Wei Chang’an returned from the other side, Chen Chuan conferred with him and Ren Xiaotian. He then gathered the rest of the team to brief them on the situation. Finally, they settled on a plan: he himself, Ren Xiaotian, Wei Chang’an, and Cai Si would infiltrate first. They would find a way to take out the men in the watchtowers, deal with the patrol guards as the situation allowed, and then signal for the rest of the team to enter.
If everything went smoothly, they would split up and systematically eliminate the people inside the camp while also destroying the vehicles. If they were exposed, they were to throw Smoke Bombs and immediately launch a full-on attack.
Chen Chuan looked at them and said, "I’ll take the slightly taller watchtower on the north side. Senior Brother Ren, the one on the south is yours."
Ren Xiaotian nodded.
Chen Chuan then turned to Wei Chang’an and Cai Si. "Brother Wei, Brother Si, the patrol post and guards nearest the main entrance are up to you two."
"As long as you can take care of the people in the watchtowers, the others won’t be a problem," Wei Chang’an said with confidence. Judging by the guards’ posture, it was obvious they were just regular people. ’With our speed and reflexes, they won’t even have a chance to retaliate once we’re in range.’
"Then let’s get ready to move," Chen Chuan said.
Each of them took out a small box and began applying an ointment to their bodies. The oil served to mask their scent, a precaution against any potential guard dogs.
Once they were ready, the team split up.
Chen Chuan, for his part, slung the Snow Monarch Blade across his back. He took a few slow steps forward, then burst into a sprint. Powered by the potent Mutated Organization in his body, he practically skimmed across the ground at an incredible speed.
Though some of the outer trenches looked wide, he cleared them with a single, light leap. As he passed over, he could see they were filled with sharp spikes. A foul stench also rose from them, leading him to surmise that the camp’s inhabitants likely used the trenches as latrines.
Throughout the approach, he stayed in the shadows. He avoided the miscellaneous junk scattered on the ground—broken glass, metal nails, aluminum cans—whenever possible. When he couldn’t, he wasn’t afraid of getting hurt, simply planting a hand on the ground to push himself over. Only the innermost layer presented a bit of a challenge.
Rope nets and wire were crisscrossed in several layers, leaving no openings. They were hung with all sorts of objects that would make a noise if disturbed and were positioned so close to the inner edge that there was almost no room to land. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
He considered for a moment before leaping directly over it. He dug his hand into the earthen retaining wall, his body hanging suspended. He then shimmied sideways to the main entrance. With a push from his hand and a light tap of his feet, the distant campfire barely flickered as he shot inside. The guard in the gatehouse was completely oblivious.
Once inside the camp, Chen Chuan quickly moved past the bonfires and light sources. He carefully circled around to the base of the watchtower. He waited for a moment, and the instant he saw the guard in the opposite tower turn away, he burst from the shadows. Within the space of a few breaths, he had scaled the tower without a sound.
He placed his hand on the doorknob, turned it, and walked inside. The guard was intently focused on trimming his fingernails. He froze when he saw the door open, and upon seeing the silhouette of a stranger, he instantly reacted, snatching the pistol at his side and aiming it forward.
Before the guard could pull the trigger, however, Chen Chuan was already in front of him. He seized the man’s wrist, and with a gentle squeeze, the bone shattered into pieces. A scream died in the guard’s throat as Chen Chuan twisted his head a full one hundred and eighty degrees, leaving him to slump limply back into his chair.
Chen Chuan glanced at the man’s neatly trimmed fingernails. He thought about the abysmal sanitation he had encountered on his way here and offered an assessment: "That’s a good habit."
