Chapter 9: What Jin Knows

The rooftop door clicked shut. The lock engaged. The wind here was stronger. It carried the scent of rain and distant traffic. Neo Ashford spread out below, a grid of grey and green.

Kaito stood by the railing. His hands rested on the cold metal. He did not look at Jin. He looked at the city.

Jin sat on a ventilation unit. A book lay closed on his knees. He was not reading. He was watching Kaito’s back.

The lunch bell had rung ten minutes ago. The school was noisy below. Voices. Laughter. Chairs scraping. Up here, there was only wind.

Kaito’s jacket moved slightly. The cards shifted against his ribs. Kuro was quiet. Unusually quiet. Even the entity knew this moment was not for commentary.

Jin stood up. He walked to the railing. He stopped beside Kaito. Not too close. Not too far. Arm’s length.

They watched a bird circle the sky. A hawk. Or a crow. Hard to tell from this height.

Jin said, "You haven’t slept."

Kaito did not turn. He said, "Fine."

Jin’s voice was calm. Low. No accusation. Just fact. Jin said, "Your eyes are red. Your hands shake when you think no one is looking. Yesterday. You cleaned the classroom in three minutes. No one cleans that fast. Unless they are trying to erase something."

Kaito tightened his grip on the railing. The metal bit into his palm. Kaito said, "Nothing to erase."

Jin looked at him. Jin said, "Maybe. Or maybe you are hiding the evidence."

Kaito turned his head. He met Jin’s gaze. Jin did not blink. His eyes were dark. Deep. Like water over stone. He had known for months. Maybe a year. He had never asked. Until now.

Jin asked, "Why."

Jin looked back at the city. Jin said, "Because you leave. Every day. Same time. You come back different. Sometimes tired. Sometimes hurt. Yesterday you had blood on your cuff. You washed it off. But I saw."

Kaito looked down. His sleeve was clean. He had burned the stain away with Ember’s heat before homeroom. Kaito said, "Imagination."

Jin shook his head. Jin said, "No. I know what I see. I know what I feel. The air changes when you walk into a room. It gets heavier. Like pressure before a storm."

Kaito looked away. He watched the traffic below. Cars moved like beetles. People moved like ants. They were safe. Because he was here. Because he fought. Kaito paused. He searched for the words. Kaito said, "If you know. Say nothing."

Jin said, "I have."

Kaito asked, "For how long."

Jin said, "Long enough."

Kaito exhaled. The breath misted in the cold air. He felt the weight in his pocket. The Ace of Spades was warm. Hot. Kuro was listening. Kaito said, "Dangerous."

Jin said, "I know."

Kaito said, "Could die."

Jin said, "I know."

Kaito turned fully toward Jin. He searched for fear. He found none. He found resolve. Steady. Unmoving. Kaito asked, "Why stay."

Jin pushed off the railing. He walked to the center of the rooftop. He sat down on the concrete. He crossed his legs. He looked up at Kaito. Jin said, "Because you are my friend."

Kaito stood still. The wind whipped his hair across his face. He did not brush it away. Kaito said, "Friend doesn’t help."

Jin patted the ground beside him. Jin said, "Friend doesn’t leave. Sit."

Kaito hesitated. He looked at the door. He looked at Jin. He walked over. He sat down. The concrete was cold. It seeped through his pants.

They sat in silence. Five minutes. Ten. The wind died down. The city noise faded into a hum. Jin’s voice broke the silence. Soft. Certain. Jin said, "You are fighting something. Something big. Something bad."

Kaito looked at his hands. Kaito said, "Yes."

Jin asked, "Can I help."

Kaito said, "No."

Jin asked, "Why."

Kaito said, "Can’t protect."

Jin nodded. He accepted the answer. He did not argue. He did not push. He just sat. Jin said, "Then I will wait."

Kaito looked at him. Kaito asked, "Wait for what."

Jin picked up a small stone. He turned it over in his fingers. Jin said, "For you to be ready. For you to trust. For the day you cannot do it alone. Everyone breaks eventually. Even you. When you do. I will be here."

Kaito felt something in his chest loosen. A knot he had carried for two years. Tight. Painful. It did not vanish. But it eased. Kaito said, "Thank you."

Jin smiled. It was small. Rare. Genuine. Jin said, "You are welcome."

They sat together. The sun moved across the sky. Shadows lengthened. The cold deepened. Kaito’s phone vibrated in his pocket. He ignored it. He knew who it was. Hana. Checking if he was eating. Ryota. Asking about homework.

He did not answer. He sat with Jin.

Kuro’s voice whispered. Faint. Distant. Kuro said, "This is risky. He knows too much. Knowledge is a liability."

Kaito tapped his pocket. Once. Silent command.

Kuro said, "Do not silence me. I am trying to keep you alive."

Kaito whispered so quiet Jin did not hear. Kaito said, "Alive."

Kuro said, "Exactly. If he talks. If he slips. The wrong people hear. The Architects. The Devourers. They will use him."

Kaito said, "Protect him."

Kuro said, "By pushing him away."

Kaito said, "No."

Kuro was silent. The shadow in Kaito’s mind receded.

Jin looked at him. Jin asked, "You are talking to them. Again."

Kaito nodded. Kaito said, "Yes."

Jin asked, "Do they agree with me."

Kaito said, "No."

Jin stood up. He brushed the dust off his pants. Jin said, "Then they are foolish. The bell will ring soon. We should go."

Kaito stood. He brushed off his own pants. He checked his jacket. The cards were secure. The notebook was hidden. The secret was safe. For now. Kaito said, "Jin."

Jin stopped at the door. He looked back. Kaito said, "Thank you."

Jin nodded. He opened the door. The noise from the hallway spilled out. Voices. Laughter. Normalcy. Jin said, "Do not thank me. Just survive."

Jin walked through the door. He held it open. He waited for Kaito. Kaito walked through. The door closed behind them. The lock clicked.

They walked down the stairs. Step. Step. Step.

The hallway was crowded. Students rushed to class. Teachers shouted. The world was chaotic. Loud. Messy. Kaito walked through it. He felt different. Lighter. He was not alone.

He had a secret. Now Jin shared the weight.

They reached the classroom. They sat at their desks. Ryota turned around. He started talking about a video game. Hana passed a note. It said: Are you okay? You looked sad at lunch.

Kaito wrote back: Fine.

He put the note away. He opened his textbook. He picked up his pen. Jin sat in the corner. He opened his book. He looked at Kaito. He nodded. Once. Kaito nodded back.

The teacher walked in. He started talking about history. Dates. Wars. Empires falling. Kaito listened. He wrote down the notes. He kept his hand near his pocket.

The cards were warm. The city was quiet. The count was forty eight. But now there were two of them.

He looked at Jin. Jin was reading. Calm. Steady. Kaito looked back at the board. He wrote down the date.

He survived another day.
