Cards Of The Silent King-Chapter 18: Akira Enters the Deck
The shrine stood at the edge of the Grey District. The pavement ended where the forest began. Old wood rested against moss covered stone. A torii gate stood nearby. It had lost its red paint decades ago.
Kaito stood before the steps. The air here was heavy. It was not heavy with danger. It was heavy with memory.
Kuro’s voice was low. He said, This is not a crack.
Kaito climbed the steps. The wood creaked. No birds sang. No wind moved the leaves.
The main hall was open. There were no doors. A figure stood inside.
The figure was humanoid. It was tall. Armor made of blue spirit energy covered its body. A katana rested at its hip. Its face was hidden behind a mask. The mask was white. It was porcelain. It was cracked down the middle.
The figure did not move. It did not breathe. It waited.
Kaito stopped at the threshold. He did not draw a card. He kept his hands at his sides.
Kaito said, You are not lost.
The figure turned. The movement was smooth. It was fluid. It was like water flowing uphill.
The figure said, I am waiting.
The voice was deep. It was resonant. It vibrated in the floorboards.
The figure said, I wait for a worthy hand. Or a worthy death.
Kuro warned, He is old.
Kuro added, He is older than me. Do not underestimate him.
Kaito stepped inside. The shadows lengthened. They reached for his ankles. He shook them off.
Kaito asked, Name.
The figure placed a hand on the katana. He said, Akira.
Akira said, I am the Wandering Blade. I served a king who is dust. I guard a shrine that is empty. I am obsolete.
Kaito looked around. The shrine was clean. It was swept. There was no dust. Someone maintained it.
Kaito said, You stay.
Akira drew the sword. The metal sang. It made a high, clear note.
Akira said, I swore an oath. I promised to protect this place. I will stay until the end.
Akira said, The end has come many times. I am still here. You are the first to walk the steps in fifty years.
Kaito reached into his jacket. He touched the deck. He felt the weight. There were fourteen cards. There were fourteen souls.
Kaito said, Come.
Akira nodded. It was once. It was a gesture of respect.
Akira moved.
He was fast. He was faster than Kuro. He was faster than Fenrir. The blade flashed. Blue light cut the air.
Kaito sidestepped. The sword sliced his jacket. Fabric fell. Skin remained untouched.
Kaito drew the Ace of Spades.
Kaito said, Kuro.
Shadow erupted. Claws appeared. Wings spread. Teeth showed. Kuro materialized. He met the blade with shadow. The steel passed through. The shadow solidified. It gripped the sword arm.
Akira did not struggle. He twisted. He broke the grip. He kicked Kuro in the chest. Kuro dissolved into smoke.
Kuro said, He knows spirit combat.
Kuro added, It is rare.
Kaito drew the King of Fangs.
Kaito said, Fenrir.
The wolf exploded into light. He lunged. His jaws were open. He aimed for the throat.
Akira sheathed the sword. He caught Fenrir’s jaws with his bare hands. Spirit met spirit. Sparks flew. He pushed the wolf back. Fenrir skidded. He growled. He was happy.
Akira said, Strong.
Akira said, But brute force is not honor.
Kaito stepped forward. He did not summon another. He walked toward the blade.
Akira swung. Kaito did not dodge. He raised his hand. He caught the flat of the blade.
It burned. His skin smoked. He did not let go.
He looked into the mask. He looked into the eyes behind it.
Kaito said, Protect.
Akira froze. The sword stopped. The pressure eased.
Akira asked, What.
Kaito said, I protect. I do not conquer. I do not rule. I protect.
Kaito’s hand bled. The blood dropped on the wood.
Kaito said, You protect. It is the same.
Akira looked at the blood. He looked at Kaito’s face. He saw the tired eyes. He saw the scars. He saw the weight.
Akira said, You carry too much.
Kaito said, I am used to it.
Akira said, You fight for others. You do not fight for glory.
Kaito said, Yes.
Akira slowly withdrew the sword. He sheathed it. The blue armor flickered. It dimmed.
Akira said, I have waited for a master who does not seek power.
Akira said, I have refused many. They wanted weapons. They wanted slaves. I am neither.
Kaito lowered his hand. The burn was deep. He wrapped it in a strip of cloth from his pocket.
Kaito said, Partner.
Akira was silent. The shrine seemed to breathe again. The wind returned. The birds sang.
Akira repeated, Partner. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
He tested the word.
Akira said, I can accept this. But there is a condition.
Kaito said, Listen.
Akira’s voice was steel. He said, No dishonorable orders.
Akira said, I will not kill innocents. I will not flee from a worthy fight. I will not serve cowardice.
Akira said, If you ask this. I will break the contract. And I will leave.
Kaito nodded. It was once.
Kaito said, Fine.
Akira bowed. It was deep. It was formal.
Akira said, Then I am yours. I am yours until the end. Or until you break your word.
Akira’s body began to fade. He turned into light. It was blue. It was bright. It was warm. The light swirled. It condensed. It fell into Kaito’s open hand.
A card formed.
It was an ordinary playing card. It was the Jack of Clubs. But the image shifted. A ronin stood in armor. A katana rested across his back.
Kaito closed his hand around it. It was heavy. It was heavier than the others.
Kuro said, He is strong.
Kuro added, He is stronger than me. Maybe he is stronger than all of us.
Kaito said, Good.
Kuro said, Do not trust him blindly.
Kaito said, Trust is earned.
Kaito put the card in the deck. He fanned them. There were fifteen cards now. They glowed in unison. It was a chord. It was a harmony.
He walked out of the shrine. The sun was setting. The sky was orange.
He walked home. His hand throbbed. The burn would scar. He would keep the scar.
Kuro noted, You added a soldier.
Kuro said, Your army grows.
Kaito said, Not army.
Kaito said, Family.
Kuro said, Yes.
Kaito reached his apartment. He locked the door. He sat at the desk. He laid the cards out.
The Jack of Clubs sat in the center. It pulsed slowly. It was like a heartbeat.
Akira’s voice came from the card. It was clear. It was calm. He said, I am ready when you are.
Kaito said, Rest.
Akira said, As you wish.
Kaito gathered the cards. He put them in the inner pocket. He stood up. He walked to the mirror.
He looked at his hand. The bandage was red.
He thought about Hana. He thought about Ryota. He thought about Jin.
They did not know about the shrine. They did not know about the sword. They did not know about the oath.
They only knew he was tired. They only knew he was there.
That was enough.
Kaito turned off the light. He lay on the bed. He closed his eyes.
The deck was heavier. The responsibility was heavier.
He slept.
He slept for six hours.
He woke before the alarm. He stood up. He checked the cards.
There were fifteen.
He put on his jacket. He covered the bandage. He walked out the door.
The city was waiting. The cracks were waiting.
He was ready.
