Capturing the Young Doctor's Heart: Mr. Big Shot Won't Let Me Go-Chapter 70: Good Riddance—Come With Me
The afternoon sunlight falls through the window onto the heavy solid wood table. The medical book is still open on the second page, but she hasn’t read a single word.
Just then, the sound of a text message breaks the silence.
She picks up her phone to take a look; it’s a message from Lawyer Finn Prescott.
[The auction house returned the full amount to President Prescott’s account after discovering the necklace was stolen property]
Claire Prescott is a bit incredulous: [A full refund already?]
The reply comes: [Yes.]
There’s no reason to doubt the lawyer’s words, nor would he lie to her, but she can’t shake the feeling that things are not that simple.
The auction house was too straightforward; everything proceeded too smoothly.
It feels a bit unusual.
However, the necklace, with its engraved inscription, belonged to a private collection. At the auction, the speaker deliberately avoided mentioning this feature, which seemed like an intentional marketing cover-up.
The facts are as they stand, so she stops overthinking it, leans back in her chair, and closes her eyes to gather her thoughts.
In her half-asleep state, she hears a voice calling her.
Opening her eyes, Zara Leighton’s figure appears before her.
"Surprise~"
Claire is taken aback, "Zara?"
After not seeing her for over half a month, even in casual minimalist attire, the celebrity’s noble and flamboyant aura can’t be concealed.
"I came straight to find you once I got off the plane, haven’t I been a loyal friend?"
Her smile is bright and dazzling, but there’s a strong nasal tone to her voice.
Claire, concerned, asks, "Got a cold?"
"Yeah, I had two underwater scenes two nights ago, soaked for quite a while, and haven’t adjusted well yet."
Claire turns to get her a cup of warm water, "Is it stuffy?"
"Used the method you taught me, using a hairdryer on the Dazhui point, and it’s much better now."
"Do you want me to take your pulse?"
"No need, it’s just a minor cold, two days of medicine will do."
Noticing the fatigue in Claire’s eyes, Zara asks, "Didn’t sleep well last night?"
Last night...
Thinking about what happened with Keane Lowell, waves ripple in her heart, but she calmly says, "Slept well, but just a little emotionally tired."
"Emotionally tired?"
After knowing her for so many years, this free-spirited friend has never spoken of emotional exhaustion. Zara, concerned, asks, "What happened while I was away?"
Claire shares her worries: "I’m considering moving out for a while, but I’m scared to live alone."
"Why move? Living with your grandparents is so comfortable, and there’s no need for commuting."
Claire explains, "My uncle and his family are coming back, and I’ve had some disputes with my aunt. I don’t really want to see her."
"Then move in with me."
"You’re traveling all the time. I don’t even know if I’ll see you once a month. Moving in would still leave me alone."
Thinking about it, Zara teases, "I think you should find someone. Our pure-hearted Chinese doctor has so many suitors but isn’t interested in any. I don’t need to say more about who’s kept you loyal all these years."
The words are as if she saw through her at a glance.
Claire is a bit puzzled, "When did you notice?"
"We’ve known each other for so long, how could I not know you? Back at the villa, when you said ’I don’t know how to face him,’ is that something you would usually say?"
"When Keane Lowell asked me to take you to the hot springs, and only after you entered did I know it was his private place, I thought there was something going on between you two."
"Keane is famously aloof and abstinent in our circle. He would never let anything touch him amidst countless temptations. Letting a girl into his private springs was strange. I hurried away to give you both some time alone."
Zara speaks with great enthusiasm, as if she’s reliving that moment, "Each time I wanted to ask what happened that day, but I figured it’s your first love, and it should be based on your own feelings."
Now, her thoughts remain unchanged.
Keane’s high and unattainable status doesn’t pose a loss for Claire if they just have fun, but she wonders about their current situation.
Claire chuckles, "Your analysis is so clear. Back then, I thought he saw me as a sister. I didn’t dare think what you suggested. Now it seems like I found a treasure."
Found a treasure...
Zara is stunned, "It’s been less than two months, and you’ve secured Keane Lowell?"
"To be precise, he came after me," she says, knowing her own tactics weren’t enough to truly catch him.
For some reason, Zara feels like she’s been flaunted at, looking at her meaningfully, "Seems like you two are quite a match. If you want to move out, why not go to him instead of worrying alone here?"
Claire shakes her head, unable to pinpoint what feels off.
Seeing her confusion, Zara clarifies, "You’re the apple of two elders’ eyes. They won’t agree to you moving out. If you can’t stand your aunt, come stay with me; I’m off for a few days anyway."
Claire hesitates for a moment.
Two days isn’t enough, and besides, her aunt is still at the police station, not in her view.
But going to Zara’s for a break sounds good, so she nods, "Okay."
Zara takes a sip of water, her body weary, "Alright, I’ll go home and adjust to the time zone, and I’ll come back to pick you up in the evening for dinner."
Actually.
Their homes are not far apart, merely a fifteen-minute drive.
Zara’s grandfather’s land has been rebuilt into a new house, but she occasionally stays at home, usually residing in hotels.
However, by dusk.
When Zara arrives on time, a Maybach with a Beijing A license plate enters the alley two seconds ahead of her.
She steps on the brake, pauses for a bit, and quietly follows.
Seeing the Maybach indeed parked at Sinclair Apothecary’s entrance.
Out walks the influential Lowell family head, dressed in a smoke-gray, abstinently chic shirt tucked into his trousers, holding flowers, walking steadily into the clinic.
And so, she watches as the man gets there first, unable to do anything but wait outside.
In no time.
Claire and Keane emerge together from the clinic.
Claire notices her car, says something to her boyfriend, and walks directly toward Zara, knocking on her car window.
Zara rolls down her window, "Go on, have your date. I understand."
Claire frowns, "Understand what? We planned for dinner; open the door."
Zara hesitates for a moment, and seeing the man’s deep gaze, doesn’t dare open the door, "Forget it, I don’t want to get beaten. I can’t compete with a big shot for a woman. Let’s meet next time."
With that, she starts the engine and drives off without a second thought.
Claire stands there, stunned.
Watching the car’s tail disappear, she didn’t react for a long time to what Zara just did.
She turns to look at the man standing there and walks over to him helplessly, complaining, "You scared my friend away."
In fact, he didn’t do or say anything just now.
She doesn’t even know what Zara is scared of.
Yet the man nonchalantly says, "Just as well, come with me."
