Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Let Go of the Need to Control Her

That same night, Jericho Prescott was summoned back to the old house by the old man.

In the study, the old man looked at him sternly and said straight to the point, "I didn’t originally want to interfere in the matters between you and your daughter, but this time, there are things I must say."

In front of his own father, Jericho Prescott stood humbly, restraining his aura.

The old man earnestly said, "Our whole family is proud and high-spirited; you should know this as well. But with your own family, especially your children, you should put aside your pride and be more patient. I’ve told you this a long time ago, but when you were ill, you refused to listen to anything. Now that you’re better, let it go. Claire is the only child you have with Yuna. If Yuna were still alive, she would never allow you to treat her child like this, nor would she let her be afraid to come home every time."

Mentioning Yuna, Jericho Prescott’s face darkened, and his eyes were cast in shadow.

The old man continued, "Now that Claire has grown up, she has her own thoughts. Some experiences she needs to go through herself to understand what’s best. Only after facing hardships outside will she truly return home. If you really care for her, you should curb your desire to control her and let her navigate her own path. Support her when she’s weary, and be her safety net."

Listening patiently until he finished speaking, Jericho Prescott fell into a long silence, furrowing his brows, "Letting go for so many years, she now walks a challenging and thankless path in medicine. If I continue to not care, how will she cope if she ends up with that boy from the Lowell Family and gets mistreated without even knowing?"

"I’ve already had Finn Prescott inform her about Keane Lowell’s situation. Claire has been naughty since she was a child, but despite that, she’s clever enough not to suffer."

"But..."

The old man interrupted him, "Reluctance is one thing, but you need to let go when the time is right. The mistakes you made when you were ill, what you owe her, those things have already happened. Don’t make her resent you more."

That night, Jericho Prescott couldn’t sleep, contemplating throughout the night.

...

Early the next morning.

Claire Prescott was coming downstairs when she smelled a rich aroma wafting from the kitchen.

She peeked into the kitchen and was instantly stunned.

She saw her father, who usually wouldn’t lift a finger, in the kitchen, wearing an apron and cooking soup.

She seriously doubted she was seeing things, or her father was sleepwalking, or perhaps he was possessed.

Jericho Prescott turned his head and looked at her, asking in a domestic manner, "Is your brother up?"

Claire came back to her senses and replied, "I don’t know."

"Go check on him and tell him to come down for breakfast."

Claire nodded woodenly, her limbs not fully cooperating, and headed upstairs in a daze.

No matter how she thought about it, it seemed incredible.

Her father was actually making breakfast for them?!

She knocked on Finn Prescott’s door.

After a moment, he came out of the bedroom looking groggy, still in his pajamas.

He smelled of tobacco, as if he had just finished a cigarette.

Claire frowned at him, "Dad’s calling you for breakfast."

After saying that, she turned and left.

Finn watched her leave, went back inside to change clothes, and followed her downstairs.

Upon seeing his father busy in an apron, his gaze stalled, quickly returning to normal as he sat across from his sister.

Jericho Prescott took off the apron and sat down, ladling soup bowl by bowl from the pot and placing them in front of them, "I made some soup. Try it and see if it’s good?"

Claire tasted it, her expression unchanged, and under Jericho Prescott’s gaze, she smiled faintly and said, "It’s quite good. When did you learn to cook, Dad?"

"Just learned today."

Finn sipped his soup, his thick eyebrows slightly furrowing as he glanced at Claire opposite him.

Yet she was drinking spoonful after spoonful of the soup, her face unruffled.

He somewhat admired her tolerance at times.

It was so salty, yet she managed to show no expression.

However, when Jericho Prescott tasted his own soup, he frowned deeply, casting a profound look at the two of them before instructing Granny Lee to pour out the rest of the soup.

"Don’t drink what’s in your bowls either."

Today’s father was unusually different, making her feel somewhat uncomfortable, and even slightly anxious, giving her a bad feeling.

She spoke up to ease the tension, "Actually, it’s not that bad. Chinese medicine tastes worse than this soup."

Jericho Prescott’s expression softened somewhat, "How can a rich broth be compared to Chinese medicine?"

Claire noticed his fatigue and broke the silence, "Didn’t you sleep well last night?"

Jericho Prescott offered a pretext, "Just dealt with some work matters."

"No matter how busy work is, you should still take care of your health."

"Alright."

He turned the conversation to Finn, asking him, "What does The Lancaster Family say about the Kystral Amusement Park project?"

"Ethan Lancaster has already agreed to sign the contract, following the original plan without any additional conditions."

Jericho Prescott was somewhat surprised and cautiously asked, "Have you reviewed the contract?"

"The contract is fine. We plan to sign today, and if all goes well, construction in Kystral will also begin soon."

"You take full charge of the project." Jericho Prescott glanced at Claire, "Isn’t your sister also planning to go to Kystral? Let her go with you then."

Upon hearing this, Claire’s eyes immediately brightened, staring at him in a daze.

Every time she came back before, it ended unpleasantly when she was about to return to Kystral. Now, with such ease, such peace, to let her return, she was too moved to speak, fearing she would say something wrong or behave improperly, causing him to change his mind.

Finn was also surprised to see his attitude change so drastically, looking at him incredulously.

Jericho Prescott frowned, "What are you both looking at me for, eat."

Claire stared at the sandwich beside her, cautiously asking, "Did you make this sandwich too?"

Jericho Prescott gave her a glance, and Claire quickly shut her mouth, picking up the toasted sandwich and taking a bite.

Thank goodness.

It tasted normal.

She could also tell that this sandwich definitely wasn’t made by her father.

The family enjoyed a rare moment of lightness.

Jericho Prescott silently watched his daughter.

Even though he had decided to let go, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of restraint and reluctance.

...

Under the pale sunlight, the teapot in the backyard had been emptied and refilled, as the siblings sat side by side to quench their thirst. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Thinking of what her father had just said, Claire was eager to return, and she couldn’t help but ask, "When are we heading back to Kystral?"

Finn turned his head slightly towards her and asked back, "When do you want to go?"

"Can I really go whenever I want?"

Finn looked at her silently, with a hint of helplessness in his eyes, "Of course, I need to take care of things here first."
