Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 686: Did He Die...?
The raging flame was reflected in Jia Molei’s eyes, instilling dread and terror into his heart.
Ku Jin was right – their sole escape route was blocked, so there was no way they could emerge unscathed. Even if they could get out with minor injuries, that was on the condition that they did it now, which was impossible because Ku Jin had no plans to let him go!
"Crazy bastard!" he seethed. "Do you really want to die with me that much?!"
Ku Jin did not even pretend to think before answering in a heartbeat, "What’s wrong with that? I think that’s a pretty good arrangement, no?"
What’s wrong with that, he asked. Pretty good arrangement, he said. Good, your ass! Jia Molei fumed internally, so angry that he felt like spitting a mouthful of blood. He really had no idea what was running through Ku Jin’s mind. The man had always been insane, that’s no longer new. But this time, he had completely outdone himself! Ku Jin might have wanted to die, but he didn’t!
Gripping the man’s arms, Jia Molei exerted all of his strength to contend with the man, trying to flip their position to no avail.
Time was running out. The fire was encroaching on them, and the old building couldn’t sustain for long.
Sweat rolled ceaselessly down Jia Molei’s face, and his back pressed against the window sill felt burning; he wouldn’t be surprised to find it scorched black. Yet under the imminent threat of death, all the pain in his body seemed inconsequential.
"Give up, Molei," Ku Jin grinned sharply, increasing the force pressing on Jia Molei. "Is it so bad to be together with me even in Hell?"
The inertia propelled Jia Molei backward, and a string inside his mind seemed to snap. "Laozi is going to heaven!!!" He roared and grabbed onto the window frame to prevent himself from falling, the sharp glass shards piercing his skin and drawing blood. Yet he couldn’t even feel the pain. The muscles in his entire body bulged in raw power, veins flared up his neck, and his eyes turned bloodshot from the exertion. Every single second seemed to stretch into eternity.
At that critical moment—!
Someone dashed out of the sea of fire, charging toward them!
Jia Molei’s pupils dilated in shock. He only had time to register an unfamiliar face when the man crashed into them with the force of the train wreck, pushing the two of them out of the window, and in return, himself as well.
"DIE, MASTER MANIPULATOR—!" Zhong Yun roared, clinging onto Ku Jin in a death grip as they plunged into the hellish inferno together. He had snuck in after hearing the first gunshot, and upon witnessing the chaos downstairs, he had been hiding, waiting for the right moment to pounce.
In that one suspended frame, as he brought with him the culprit who had taken his lover’s life into the flames, a bright, genuine smile spread across his gaunt face.
The merciless tongues of flames licked his body and burned his flesh, scorching him inside out. Yet for some reason, he felt... liberated.
Almost as if he could already see Qin Zhen waiting for him on the other side.
Ku Jin, who had not expected the presence of the intruder, was caught off guard. The surprise caused him to release his grip on Jia Molei, and he instinctively reached out. Amidst the roaring flame, his voice carried a hint of desperation. "Molei—!"
Everything had happened so swiftly and suddenly that Jia Molei was left dumbfounded. One second he was still clutching onto the window frame for dear life, and the next second, his entire body was hanging precariously outside the window with only his hands bearing his whole weight, gripping onto the burning sill.
"Haa... haa..." his breath came out in ragged gasps, his heart still pounding violently from the rush of adrenaline.
Ku Jin and the stranger who popped out of nowhere had vanished into the fire.
For some reason, Jia Molei couldn’t shake the last look on Ku Jin’s face from his mind. It was a look full of panic, horror and desperation— when he realized that he had accidentally let go of Jia Molei.
"Did he die...?" He mumbled, almost in a daze. Somehow, it was all so hard to believe. "This is the fifth floor, and the fire is so huge, so..."
Realizing the direction of his thoughts, Jia Molei shook his head and gritted his teeth. To hell with Ku Jin! Right now, he should focus on securing his own safety first and foremost!
Clenching his jaws, he tried to hoist himself up, but at that moment, the window sill let out a dangerous creak, and the wooden structure barely sustained itself under Jia Molei’s weight. Not only that, the blood oozing out of his palms turned his grip slippery, and he almost couldn’t hold on!
"Haha..." Jia Molei let out a wry laugh. "Fuck, it seems like I will fall down too in the end..."
Despair began to creep into his heart, and tears welled up in his eyes. During his years in the underworld, he had been involved in countless life and death situations, but this was the very first time he felt like he might not make it out alive.
Jia Molei’s heart trembled when the piece of wood he clung to began to give way. He couldn’t help but curse, "Fuck... fuck my life! I should have known not to get involved with that madman in the first place! Now see what I got myself into?! Fuck, I don’t want to die... I haven’t even gotten the chance to apologize to Old Juan..."
Just as things seemed hopeless, Jia Molei’s ears perked up when he heard faint voices nearby.
"Captain, the path is blocked! The visibility is low, and we can’t see anything past the smoke!"
"What should we do, Captain?!"
Jia Molei’s breath snagged in his throat. Before his brain could process, he instinctively choked out, "Help..." his voice came out weak and hoarse at first, only to increase in volume until he was practically hollering on top of his lungs. "HELP, OVER HERE! I’M HANGING OUTSIDE THE WINDOW—!"
"Captain, I heard someone shouting!"
"Could it be the Manipulator setting up a trap for us?!"
"FUCK!" Jia Molei snapped angrily. Even after death, Ku Jin only brought him nothing but bad luck! "THIS IS JIA FUCKING MOLEI, GODDAMNIT! I WILL REALLY DIE AT ANY MINUTE IF YOU DON’T GET YOUR ASSES HERE!"
"Proceed!" Li Zhi commanded. "Clear the path in front of us first!"
From afar, the sound of an ambulance and firefighters approached, as if signaling the curtain call.
