Chapter 679: Horrible And Devastating

Mu Yuze had forgotten the last time he’d run with such desperation.

Agony seared through his entire body that even the tips of his fingers were screaming in pain, but this time there was no longer anything that could soothe him. Nothing, except seeing He Juan with his own eyes and making sure that he was okay— really okay, instead of forcing himself to live through day by day like a lifeless zombie.

"I’m telling you this out of concern and anxiety from the bottom of my heart. Please... please take good care of yourself. Don’t let anything happen to you, Officer Mu, or else... I’m afraid that Boss will not be able to go on this time. You’re the only one he has left, so please..."

Mu Yuze had been preparing himself for the day when he learned the darkness hidden in He Juan’s past. He was aware that it would not be an easy pill to digest, but he kept telling himself again and again that he would listen. He would listen to whatever He Juan wanted to tell him, and when the Alpha finished, Mu Yuze would give him a big hug and tell him how proud and grateful he was for He Juan to have made it up until this point.

At least that had been his plan, but then he ended up having to hear it from Chen Youzhi’s mouth.

Finally, Mu Yuze learned everything that had happened to He Juan seven years ago. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

And oh, it was so much, much darker and sorrowful than Mu Yuze could ever prepare himself for. Just the mere reminder of it, of what He Juan had gone through, squeezed his chest with so much pain that dying felt like a blissful mercy.

"Judging by his temperament, I’m sure he will never tell you about it with his own mouth. Or at least, he will try to downplay everything and mix in reassurances for you. For that, please allow me to become the villain."

"Seven years ago, Luo Xuan and Ku Jin got their hands on his little brother. It happened on the day Boss cooperated with the police to ambush Luo Xuan, but something went wrong and the one who appeared on the scene was his little brother. The young man ended up dying in Boss’ arms and since then... Boss seemed like a changed man."

"Doctor Jia and I were extremely worried about him, but we didn’t expect him to resort to such a desperate move. We had no idea how horrible the state he was in back then."

Amidst the blur of tears clouding his vision, Mu Yuze failed to notice a block of wood in his path and stumbled over it, crashing to the ground with a resounding thud. He gasped, though it was uncertain whether it was due to the fall or the intense pain gripping his heart. Instead of immediately getting up, he spent a few seconds lying there, his tears pitter-pattering to the dusty ground, leaving trails of water behind.

"Gege..." he choked out in between the sobs, his voice as soft as the kitten’s mewl. "Gege... Gege..."

The puzzle pieces finally fell into place, allowing Mu Yuze to see the full picture. It was nothing but horrible and devastating.

All of a sudden, Mu Yuze felt like he could understand everything— the distant look he sometimes caught in He Juan’s eyes, his reluctance to reveal the truth, the thick aura of melancholy enveloping his body, and his smile that was tinged with a hint of sadness...

"He drove the car down the cliff, determined to die with Luo Xuan. And even after Doctor Jia saved his life, his condition continued to deteriorate. As I mentioned, he... was truly resolved to die. Doctor Jia and I had no choice but to make a difficult decision: force him to consume Golden Sand to erase his memories. At that time, we believed it was the only way to save him."

"I thought... I thought everything would be fine from then on, but he recently regained his memories, which raised my concerns again. I assure you, Officer Mu, he has not exhibited any suicidal behavior since waking up. But I still can’t help but worry."

"I have a strong hunch that you, Officer Mu, are the only one keeping him grounded to reality right now. Without you, he will revert back to how he was seven years ago. That’s why I beg you... don’t ever get hurt. Please take care of yourself well. It’s the only way he can be okay."

Delicate silence lingered in the air after Chen Youzhi finished his narration. Then without a warning, Mu Yuze stood up and marched to the exit, his shoes stepping on the puddles of blood.

"Officer Mu!" Chen Youzhi blocked his path, alarm etched on his features. "Did you not listen to anything I said? You are injured right now. Please let me take you to safety!"

"Thank you for sharing all this with me, Mr. Chen, but..." Mu Yuze raised his head, revealing a pair of reddened eyes brimming with agony. "I have to go to him. I must. Please don’t stand in the way, or I will have no choice but to fight you. I know it..." large droplets of tears streamed down his cheeks as he clutched his chest. "I can sense it – he’s waiting for me. That’s why, I have to go."

Chen Youzhi looked conflicted for a moment, before he eventually heaved out a drawn-out sigh. "Take this," he said, handing a dagger to Mu Yuze.

Mu Yuze nodded in gratitude and slipped it into his boots. He proceeded to walk forward, but as he reached the doorway, he halted and turned to address Chen Youzhi, "I forgot to say this. Thank you for coming to my rescue. I owe you my life, Mr. Chen. Please go and find somewhere to hide before the police arrive."

The wails of police sirens echoed in the distance, snapping Mu Yuze out of his stupor. The reinforcements had finally arrived!

Mu Yuze roughly wiped his tears away, not caring that he had added another smudge of dirt on his face. Gritting his teeth, he summoned strength into his weak and sluggish body and rose to his feet. Now that he was freed from the oppressive influence of the Alphas’ pheromones, his mind gradually sharpened, though the passive heat still caused weakness to linger. If anything, it only intensified the visceral urge to see his Alpha.

Hurry, I have to find Juan-gege!

With that resolution in mind, Mu Yuze broke into a run, determination blazing in his black-blue eyes.
