Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 494: How Can He Be So Cool?!
In the face of that million-watt smile, He Juan found himself utterly speechless.
Throughout his life, receiving such genuine goodwill from a stranger was a rarity – well perhaps it was the norm before the tragedy of his parents struck. But after that, He Juan had grown accustomed to people fearing him, fleeing at the mere sight of him, so much that he’d start doubting whether they had a hidden agenda when they showed him a smile.
However, now that he knew A–Yu’s – Kang Guanyu’s – real identity, a piece of distant memory floated to the forefront of his mind.
The details of the year and location had become a blur to him, but he recalled that he had been at a warehouse, issuing commands to his Beta men to ensure the safety of the kidnapped children and young Omegas. He had kept his distance because he knew very well how his mere presence could terrify them.
Unexpectedly, a small figure broke from the line and trotted towards him. The child was small, scrawny, and covered in grime, making his face barely discernible beneath the mess of unkempt hair. Wearing tattered clothes that were more suitable to be called rags, he approached He Juan gingerly and tilted his head, revealing a bright gummy smile tinged with nervousness. "T–Thank you," he stammered out. "Thank you so much for saving me. I will not forget you."
Before He Juan could react, the child turned back and joined the line again, swiftly disappearing from sight. He Juan was merely caught off guard for a second before he continued to seize control of the warehouse, and in the end, the little exchange was tossed to the graveyard of his mind.
Who could have guessed that...
He Juan blinked, and the look in his eyes softened. "You have grown up well."
It took a while for Kang Guanyu to register the meaning behind his words, and as soon as he did, his hand flew to cover his mouth, his eyes widening in delight and disbelief. "Y–You remember me...?" He asked in a small voice, as though trying to suppress the burgeoning hope within him.
He did not seem to realize that he had made quite an impression in He Juan’s mind. With a hint of amusement, He Juan remarked, "I remembered you just now."
Even so, those words were already enough to make Kang Guanyu all teary-eyed as if he had won a lottery. "Teacher, did you hear that?!" He turned to A–Mu, his excitement bubbling over. "XIU remembered me! Oh God, he said he remembered me! Can I record it and pass it down as a family heirloom?!"
A–Mu clicked his tongue with mock annoyance. "Look at him. You have broken my disciple, XIU. Okay, enough with the dramatic reunion. Where’s my mung bean soup? It will soon go cold if you keep fanboying over him!"
"Right, right!" Kang Guanyu snapped out of his reverie and immediately sprang into action. He retrieved the food he had brought, set up a table for A–Mu, and handed him the warm soup. "Here you go, Teacher!"
Noting how sensible and filial he was, He Juan couldn’t help but comment, his lips hooked into a faint smile. "I didn’t know you’re receiving disciples."
"Only one disciple," A–Mu corrected as he brought a spoonful of the soup into his mouth. "Do you think I have the energy to handle more? This bear child alone is already enough to make my hands full!"
"Easy now, Teacher. Don’t choke," Kang Guanyu attempted to flatter him. "Are your shoulders sore? Do you want me to message them for you?"
Apparently, Kang Guanyu was an orphan which made him a prime target for the child traffickers. He was born with frail health and when he manifested, he ended up becoming an Alpha whose pheromones were so weak that they were almost negligible. However, weak did not mean that it was not there. The traffickers could sense the pheromones on him and thus mistook him as an Omega, abducting him from the orphanage.
He spent two long months locked in that warehouse before He Juan and his team finally located and rescued him, along with numerous other children. Back then, He Juan’s men had kindly returned him to the orphanage where he came from, but unfortunately, he discovered that the institution had shut down and all the children had been sent elsewhere, leaving him alone with nowhere to go.
In such a weakened and malnourished state, he would have died if not for A–Mu picking him up.
To A–Mu, Kang Guanyu was no different than a stray kitten. Just provide him food on time and he could already take care of himself just fine. Low-maintenance, not fussy, very easy to raise. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺
Living alone, A–Mu had no shortage of money and he thought that this kind of company did not sound too bad. As time flowed, their relationship naturally grew closer and upon noticing Kang Guanyu’s fascination with electronics, A–Mu finally decided to teach him one thing or two in his spare time.
Just like that, Kang Guanyu began to call him ’Teacher’.
Kang Guanyu was obedient and he picked up things very fast. Aside from his happy-go-lucky and easy going personality, his faint pheromones also made A–Mu comfortable around him. For years, Kang Guanyu had not stopped reminiscing about the time when he was kidnapped, starved and almost died, only to be saved by a hero. He had recounted the story so many times that A–Mu could recite it backward without a single pause.
He had always thought that the person who saved Kang Guanyu was a random good Samaritan. Who could have guessed that it had been He Juan all along?
Upon learning the past from A–Mu and Kang Guanyu, He Juan could only marvel at how mysterious destiny worked. He glanced at his watch and noted how it was getting close to the time when He Xie would usually wake up. Hence, he finally decided to take his leave. "I still have some matters to attend to, so please excuse me. I will visit again soon."
Kang Guanyu perked up with enthusiasm and thrust his hand up to the air, "Me, me, me! Please let me send you off!"
True to his words, he really walked He Juan outside the door, rendering him somewhat helpless. "It’s alright now, you can go back first," He Juan told him. However, Kang Guanyu remained rooted in place. He fiddled with his fingers, looking as if he had something to say. He Juan raised a brow and waited for him to continue, and after taking a few deep breaths, Kang Guanyu finally braced himself to ask,
"Is there... is there something I can do to assist you?"
He Juan had not seen this coming and thus, he was genuinely taken aback. "...What?"
Kang Guanyu’s brows knitted. His cheeks puffed up slightly, making him look like an indignant hamster. "The media has been talking nonsense about you, and the issue about the mutants has also been getting out of hand. My skill may not be as good as Teacher, but I’m pretty useful when it comes to tracking and erasing digital footprints. So I’m just wondering if you’d like to use my help?"
He assumed that He Juan had come here to seek A–Mu’s aid, and in concern for his Teacher’s declining health, he decided to offer himself instead. There were also his ulterior motives to assist his ’idol’. This was simply killing two birds with one stone!
He Juan could practically read his thoughts with a single glance, and he couldn’t help but release a chuckle. Too bad, he had not reached the point of asking a minor for help. Or else what would have become of his image as a functioning and highly capable adult? He responded with an amused yet helpless smile, "No need to worry, I’ve got things under control for now. By the way, how old are you this year?"
"Huh?" Kang Guanyu’s attention was instantly diverted by the sudden change of topic. Nonetheless, he still answered honestly, "I’m turning eighteen in a month. But why are you asking?"
"Eighteen..." He Juan echoed with a faint smile. Only one year younger than He Xie, and one year older than Mu Yuze. It would be great if they could all become friends someday. But of course, He Juan did not voice the thought out loud. Instead, he reached out to pat the teenager’s head. "Study well for your university entrance exam. Thanks for seeing me off. I will be going now."
Kang Guanyu remained in a daze even as He Juan walked away, leaving only the image of his straight and broad back. Somehow, the sight overlapped with the scene from all those years ago, when he glimpsed upon a dazzling radiance emanating from this person’s back after two months of starvation and captivity that felt like eternity. Everything seemed unchanged.
Shaking off his trance, he covered his blushing cheeks with his hands. "Oh my God, we’re both Alphas, but how can he be so cool?!"
After that, he hastened back to A–Mu’s room, eager to gush about his hero once more.
