He Juan clenched his fists, the line of his jaws tense. Each second seemed to crawl at a snail’s pace as he waited for an answer from Luo Xuan’s mouth, but in the end, what he received was a sigh. Luo Xuan’s expression did not even change much as he replied helplessly, "What do you want me to say? I think you must have come to a conclusion inside your mind, haven’t you?"
"What do I want you to say?" He Juan forced out each word through gritted teeth, veins bulging on his forehead. "I just want you to tell me the truth! Was it all a coincidence? Or have you set me up all along? Huh?!"
He could find no ripples in Luo Xuan’s serene eyes, as if he was an indifferent superior being who only watched as the ants beneath him squirmed and suffered.
Once, He Juan admired him for this trait, as Omegas were notoriously known for their fragile emotions and sensitivity. But Luo Xuan was anything but that. Even amidst life-and-death perils, even when being held at gunpoint, he would always maintain a calm and composed demeanor. But now, He Juan only felt sick down to his guts. How could he still remain so calm? How could he not show even the slightest bit of reaction? Did these things even matter to him at all?!
"You’re right," Luo Xuan admitted lightly, though his tone was akin to saying ’I’m fine’ or ’I’ve eaten’ and not something that caused He Juan’s mind to go blank. "That day, I arranged for Ku Jin to lead you to the Queen of Spades. I let you in on the existence of mutated people in this world, but after that, what you do is out of my control."
He Juan couldn’t help but scoff when he heard that. He couldn’t even begin to describe his current feelings— incredulity, sadness, disbelief, anger, all of them rolled into one. "Out of your control? I’m sorry to be blunt, but we have known each other not only for one or two days, Boss. You know me. You know what kind of person I am. You know what I’m going to do once I found out about this..." he closed his eyes and let out a weary sigh. "Once I stepped foot into that bar, I was already caught in your and Ku Jin’s scheme. And now, you still claim that it’s out of your control?" 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
"Scheme?" Luo Xuan’s eyes darkened as he retorted, "There’s no such scheme, XIU. Don’t overthink it. I just want to let you know that there are countless people like me in this world, people who need our help."
"Okay, fine," He Juan nodded with a wry smile. All of a sudden, he felt too tired to question why Luo Xuan didn’t just tell him outright instead of taking such a roundabout way. Was he that unreliable? "So you admit that you expect me to give them a hand. Then..." he gestured at the half-burned and crumpled paper that was still on the table, akin to a skeleton that had been dug out of the closet. "What about this? Did you expect me to discover this too? Do enlighten me, Boss. Why did I find this signature..." he seethed, his emotions grew turbulent again. "...the signature you signed with your own hand, in the archive room of a secret facility that did not even contain a single mutated Alpha? Tell me!"
Luo Xuan lowered his gaze, obscuring his light colored eyes. Just in time, a staff member knocked on the door and brought in a pot of freshly brewed tea, exactly as Luo Xuan had ordered. Taking a sip of his chrysanthemum tea, Luo Xuan waited until the staff left before speaking,
"Now that you have uncovered so much, I suppose there’s no need for me to hide anything more. Yes, I am one of the ’products’ from the experiment. But as you can see, I didn’t manifest into an Alpha, but an Omega." He raised his eyelids and stated, "I am one of a kind, XIU. The only mutated Omega in the world."
He Juan sat frozen in place. He stared at Luo Xuan in shock, forgetting to even breathe.
"Do you think only Alphas can mutate due to the drug AX–03? Apparently not, and I am the living proof for that. But nobody knows about me because my mother sacrificed her life to hide my unique pheromones. I was labeled with code F, a code for those who failed to manifest as an Alpha. Those researchers are greedy, they were not even willing to let a failure like me off. Do you know what they had planned for me, XIU?"
Without giving He Juan a chance to respond, he continued with a tone so calm that it sent shivers down He Juan’s spine, "They wanted to throw me to someone’s bed. I was eleven that year, yet to get my first heat. But they already wanted to train me, so that when that time came, I would have amassed enough ’experience’ to get pregnant on the first try. Surely, a child born from a carrier of AX–03 in his body would have a higher chance to mutate as well. Do you understand, XIU? Such is the fate of Omegas in this world. We are not seen as humans; we are treated even worse than animals. We are only tools for others to achieve their goals."
He Juan’s emotions boiled over, his jaws clenched so tightly that blood filled his mouth. His chest felt stifled as if a ball of cotton had lodged in his respiratory tract, making it nearly impossible to breathe. His body trembled uncontrollably from anger, frustration and regret. He should have killed them all... when he raided those secret facilities, he should have killed every single one of those damn researchers without mercy!
He had not even thought of a response yet when Luo Xuan continued, "So I thought of creating Xuanlong. I want to build a place where people like me can live without fearing tomorrow, but..." he abruptly trailed off.
He Juan urged, "But what?"
Luo Xuan suddenly lowered his head and chuckled softly. For some reason, He Juan had an ominous premonition about what he was going to say next. "I realized that everything is futile. Even with Xuanlong, I couldn’t protect every single one of them. Omegas continued to be enslaved, tortured and exploited. Nothing has changed. People still looked at us as if we were objects of possession. Then do you know the brilliant idea I came up with, XIU?"
His smile bloomed akin to a delicate flower, yet the words he said caused He Juan’s blood to run cold,
"What if every Omega in this world mutated like me?"
