Chapter 454: What Do You Think?

This time, they had really hit the jackpot with Jay.

His real name was Xiong Yang, age 32, and his deceased brother was a special forces soldier who had been assigned the mission to eliminate the mutated Alphas, only to end up severely injured.

When Xiong Yang reached the hospital that day, his brother’s life was already hanging by a thread, and the man only had the energy to whisper a few words to him.

Nobody, not even the doctor, nurses and the soldiers present in the room, could have guessed that the man did not utter his last farewell, but he was entrusting something extremely important instead; so important that Xiong Yang had been living in hiding ever since, for fear that he would be silenced.

He had been waiting for the right person to come along, to hand this crucial information to them, to unload the burden he had been carrying for years.

As soon as he discovered Marius, He Juan, and Ye Qiu’s identities, and learned about the actions they had taken against secret facilities across the country, Xiong Yang immediately succumbed to Marius’ persuasion and agreed to expose everything he knew. In exchange, he only asked for protection and a guarantee for his life. This request was nothing to Marius. On the very same day, he arranged a living place for Xiong Yang abroad and also dispatched a few men to escort him safely to his destination.

When He Juan arrived at the address Marius gave him – which was an ordinary house in a certain old district – they had basically wrapped things up and extracted all the valuable information from Xiong Yang’s mouth.

Despite keeping a wooden expression, Ye Qiu’s eyes were glittering in excitement, and even Marius was humming softly under his breath. He Juan raised a brow and knocked on the door to draw their attention. "Care to share the good news with me?"

"You’re here." Marius beamed and gestured to the seat opposite him, while Ye Qiu went to the kitchen to get them drinks. The blonde man continued to say, "I believe we will be able to proceed in a month’s time. We have all the information we need." He handed a few pieces of paper to He Juan.

Flipping through them, He Juan realized they were copies of confidential reports from the army. It was evident that these were the documents entrusted to Xiong Yang by his late brother. The papers detailed the flow of funds and materials to a research institute specializing in Alzheimer’s disease in the suburbs of Yuyang. The sum of money involved was so exorbitant that it was staggering. Not to mention, there were a lot of dubious points left unexplained. He Juan only needed a glance to know that the documents had been carelessly put together in order to maintain a façade.

"Ha..." He gripped the paper so tight that his knuckles turned white, slightly incredulous."I wonder what would happen if we sent this information to the Interpol?"

"Soon," Marius responded. Just as he finished speaking, Ye Qiu returned from the kitchen with three glasses of juice, and Marius thanked her with a gentle smile, causing a slight flush to appear on the young girl’s cheeks.

Of course, He Juan’s keen eyes did not miss this small interaction. Was it only his imagination or had the tension between them intensified lately? Has something happened? Curiosity itched on his heart, and he was dying to know what had happened between his two partners behind his back. But then, he was forced to swallow the questions on the tip of his tongue when Marius turned to him and returned to the conversation at hand.

"After this, we will gather all the evidence and send it to the Interpol. What happens next is beyond the scope of our authority. Our job is done here."

"You’re right." The thought brought a relieved smile to He Juan’s lips. Finally, they could take a rest after the intense investigation for more than a year. He Juan snuck a glance at Marius and Ye Qiu, and unable to help himself, he asked, "Our cooperation will soon be over. But I wonder if the three of us will have time to meet up once in a while? You know, to reminisce about the past?" 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

A playful glint flashed in his silver eyes. Among them, the one who had to leave was Marius, as he had his own territory to take care of. Ye Qiu and He Juan would always remain in this country, but their relationship was not close enough to hang out alone. It was not exaggerating to say that Marius was the bridge connecting them, so He Juan’s question had a layered meaning to it.

Marius sent him a knowing look as he took a sip of his juice. Perhaps due to his good mood, he actually played along with He Juan’s shenanigans, "I find China to be a fascinating country, so I may visit often in the future. When that time comes, we should meet."

Ye Qiu nodded with a serious look, "We should. I will bring the children too."

He Juan barked out a laugh. He almost asked ’Is China or a certain someone in the country that is so fascinating?’ but he held himself back in the end for fear that he would offend a young girl’s maiden heart. It was one thing for him and Marius to joke around, but Ye Qiu was a girl and had a reputation to protect. He trusted that Marius had a plan on his own, so the best he could do was to watch over them from the sidelines.

At the end of the day, he wished for nothing but their happiness.

With that thought in mind, he redirected his attention to the papers. "Have you traced the source of these funds?"

"Of course. Besides the shell companies and foreign investors, I think there’s someone you need to see." Marius retrieved another paper that contained the list of investors, and among them was a name which could not be more familiar to He Juan.

Fang Yazhu

The man who had once sent assassins after He Juan, and the former candidate for the Prime Minister position who lost to Liang Yuanjun.

"Ha!" A laugh escaped He Juan’s lips, this time it was sharp and cold. A layer of glacier formed over his silver eyes as he caressed the name with his fingertips, it was as if he could see the man’s pale and terrified expression behind his eyelids. "Fang Yazhu, Fang Yazhu, I knew I shouldn’t have let him go so easily... Who would have thought he would turn out to be one of the major investors in this damned project?"

"I found it interesting because he is a politician with quite a high rank in this country, but it seems you two are acquainted with each other?" Marius asked, his tone filled with curiosity.

"Of course," He Juan replied with a matter-of-fact tone, his eyes tinged with dark humor. "We are old acquaintances. The last time I heard of him... what was it again? Ah, it seems he has ventured into business now. Perhaps I should pay him a visit later."

Marius and Ye Qiu exchanged glances, and silently lit a candle for this unfortunate man named Fang Yazhu who would meet his demise soon.

The three of them finalized the plan, and in a flash, it was already near lunchtime. Despite keeping a cool and composed appearance, He Juan found his mind drifting to Mu Yuze time and time again, and he could not concentrate unless he made sure the boy had fed himself properly.

As such, when he checked the time and saw that Mu Yuze had not sent him a message yet, he grabbed his car key and stood up.

"I should go. I have an important matter to tend to. I will not join you guys for lunch."

Marius nodded, "Let me send you off."

He Juan raised a brow, as the man had never done something like this before. However, he reckoned that Marius had something private to talk to him about, and thus he nodded. The two Alphas walked out of the house side by side. Alas, even until they reached He Juan’s car which was parked just outside, Marius still had not spoken yet.

He Juan cast him an amused glance and asked, "So, what is it? I don’t believe you would come all the way here just to see me off."

Marius rubbed the back of his neck and sighed, "You see right through me. I just wanted to ask..." He lowered his gaze and pressed his lips together, as if gathering courage for what he was about to say.

He Juan almost could not believe his eyes when he saw the color rising on the tip of Marius’ ears. The great Marius Morningstar, who would remain unfazed even surrounded by the storm of fire and rain of swords, was actually blushing! He Juan’s eyes almost bulged out of the sockets and he couldn’t stop himself from gawking.

Amidst the shock swirling in his mind, he heard the man ask in a hesitant tone that was so unlike him,

"What do you think if I... ask Miss Ye out on a date after we finish this mission?"
