Chapter 424: It’s Your Turn

The corner of Liang Yuanjun’s lips twitched into a smile. She looked far more relaxed compared to their last encounter as if a heavy weight had been loaded off her shoulders, and He Juan was glad to see this change in her.

"Good to see you too, Mr. Xiu. You may address me however you please. I believe we have no need to concern ourselves over formality any longer, right?" she offered her hand, which He Juan accepted with a firm shake. With a gesture towards the suite behind her, she beckoned for him to follow, "Please."

The door closed behind them, sealing off their conversation from prying ears and eyes. Out of habit, He Juan swiftly swept through every nook and cranny of the room to make sure that there was no listening device or hidden cameras installed. He moved with such ease that by the time Liang Yuanjun settled on the couch, he had already completed his thorough inspection over two bedrooms and was now checking the bathrooms.

When he finally returned to the living room, Liang Yuanjun could not help but interject, "Please rest assured, Mr. XIU. I’ve had my team check the room beforehand."

"You never know," He Juan chuckled. Compared to last year, the number of people who wished for his demise had doubled, and he could not afford to take any risks. He sat himself down on the couch opposite her and crossed one long leg over the other. "I suggest that you learn this skill too, Miss Liang. Don’t rely on your bodyguards too much, especially now that you are in the limelight. So many malicious eyes are waiting for you to make a slip, to pull you down from your pedestal."

Liang Yuanjun was not offended at all at being lectured by a man twenty years younger than her. Instead, she nodded with a thoughtful look and took the advice to heart, "I understand. Thank you for the reminder, Mr. XIU."

"So," He Juan beamed at her with a light and playful tone, trying to lighten the atmosphere. "How does it feel to be the prime minister and slap those politicians who looked down on you right on their faces? It must be quite exciting, huh?"

A glint of amusement flashed through Liang Yuanjun’s eyes as she took a sip of her coffee. "I must admit," she said. "The sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that comes with this position is worth every challenge I’ve faced along the way. It’s quite ironic, really. Those who once underestimated me now suddenly shower me with flattery. It reminds me of how shallow and vain those people are."

He Juan scrunched his nose in disgust, "Hypocrite." This was why he loathed dealing with politics. It was akin to murky quagmire; once you stepped on it, the stain was very hard to get rid of. "How about Fang Yazhu?"

"Mr. Fang has taken a huge blow since the corpse of a politician was found in one of his properties. I have no idea how he is doing now, but I heard he intends to venture into business." She paused for a beat, then asked gingerly, "That politician..."

"Yes," He Juan flashed her a grin, not at all bothered to admit his crime. "It’s my doing." His keen eyes observed the woman in front of him, trying to find the slightest hint of fear or horror like any others. But much to his surprise, Liang Yuanjun merely nodded as she expressed her understanding,

"I see. I have my own doubts, but thank you for confirming it."

He Juan was taken aback for a second, and then he could not help but chuckle. He had gotten so used to people fearing him or treating him with caution that encountering people who exhibited different reactions would always catch him off guard. Like this woman... and also Mu Yuze. He shook his head in amusement, before he finally delved to his main purpose of coming here. "I have fulfilled my part of the deal to bring you to this position, and now it’s your turn. I believe you haven’t forgotten it, have you, Miss Liang?" he stated, his tone weighed in gravity.

Liang Yuanjun swallowed subtly as she felt the intensity of those silver eyes on her. It had been more than a year, but the sense of awe and apprehension she felt in the presence of this man remained unchanged. Until now, she still could not quite determine if it was due to who this man was, or simply the natural response of an Omega in the face of a superior Alpha.

She tightened her grip around the coffee cup and tried her best to meet He Juan’s eyes, "I have submitted the revision of the law. If everything goes well, then it will officially be implemented at the end of this year. But there is a problem..."

"A problem?"

Liang Yuanjun nodded with a troubled look, "Despite the new law, people will continue to disregard it for the low authority of its enforcers."

"Ah..." He Juan grasped the essence of her worry in an instant. "You’re afraid that nothing will change, that people will still take the police lightly for their inability to mete out punishments." It sounded more like a statement than a question, and Liang Yuanjun’s nod confirmed his understanding.

"I– I need more allies in the police force. A person who shares my vision, who can uphold my law and punish the evildoers, who can change this twisted system from within..." she gazed at him solemnly. "Do you... happen to know such a person, Mr. Xiu?"

As He Juan approached the red traffic light, he lightly stepped on the brake, resting his head on his knuckles with his arm on the windowsill. He could not help but feel amused when he recalled Liang Yuanjun’s question a moment ago. It seemed like the woman had some kind of misconception toward him, thinking that he was an omnipotent being who had a solution to any problems.

The truth was far from it. He Juan knew all too well that he had no connections within the police force. In fact, they were all after him, each eager to have his head for themselves.

Shaking his head, He Juan let out a helpless laugh. It seemed like he had to tell Liang Yuanjun to rely on herself for this one. There was little he could do in such a situation.

His phone buzzed on the dashboard, and he reached out to pick it up. He raised an eyebrow when he saw Jia Molei’s name on the screen. It was rare for Doctor Jia to seek him out on his own accord. Was there a problem?

"Hello, this is XIU speaking." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"XIU..." He Juan sensed something off with the doctor’s voice. He sounded gloomy and troubled, totally unlike his usual self. "Can you drop by the clinic for a while? It’s okay even if it’s very late."

He was not cursing, and he even said some considerate words! Something was definitely wrong here! He Juan flicked on the car signal and made a decisive U-turn. "What’s wrong?" He asked, a sliver of concern slipping into his tone. "Did you take in another troublesome patient? Or is someone causing trouble?"

"That..." Jia Molei hemmed and hawed, his hesitation apparent. "Nothing is wrong with the clinic. It’s just... can you come to see A-Mu for a while?"

He Juan’s brows furrowed when he heard that name. Hadn’t he already ceased all contact with the Omega once he finished their last deal? He had also clearly told Jia Molei that he was not interested in getting into a relationship. So why would the man still make such a request to him? The words of refusal was ready on the tip of He Juan’s tongue, only to be stuck halfway when he heard Jia Molei say,

"His tumor suddenly relapsed," he released a heavy sigh. "I am not confident he can live past this year."
