Chapter 406: God’s Mercy?

"XIU!" Marius burst in through the door and his gaze immediately landed on He Juan who was sitting on the couch. He had gotten rid of the blood-soaked shirt and was only draped with his suit jacket around his shoulders, while his torso was wrapped in thick bandage with specks of blood seeping through.

Marius took a deep inhale to calm his uneven breathing, then he walked over to He Juan and scanned him upside down with concern. "I came here as soon as I got the call. How is it? Are you okay?"

"I am fine now that you’re here," He Juan showed a relieved smile upon seeing a partner whom he could always rely on. He gestured at Marius to take a seat before he asked, "How is it? Have you caught the sniper?"

"No," a hint of coldness flashed through the man’s brilliant blue eyes, and his lips were twisted into a chilling smile. "When my men got there, the scene had already been cleaned up. That person managed to escape from your radar and lingered around the area long enough to ambush you, so they should be a professional hitman, a very capable one at that. But what about you?" The glacier in his eyes thawed as he gazed at the bandage around He Juan’s torso worriedly. "Are you sure you don’t need to have your wound treated?" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Earlier, the person whom He Juan had called as he was driving away from that place was none other than Marius, because at the moment, he could trust no one but the man to deal with the sniper.

After that, He Juan had decided to head straight to the nearest empty house under his name which he had planned to spend his rut in. Fortunately, the distance was not far and thanks to He Juan’s maniacal driving speed, they reached their destination in less than half an hour – well before Xiao Gu’s manifestation period could fully settle.

The boy had been placed into the confinement room where his pheromones would be contained, and He Juan had also suppressed the bleeding on his wound for the time being.

So far they had managed to bring the crisis under control, but the main problem was... they could not locate the sniper.

Of all people, if there was someone whom He Juan believed could track down their attacker, then it would be Marius. And the fact that Marius had failed to do so must be taken into serious consideration. It seemed like He Juan had underestimated the obstinacy of those people who wanted to get rid of the mutated Alphas once and for all...

"I’m okay. The wound has already been stabilized and as long as I don’t move around, I will be able to keep the bleeding under control. I will ask my doctor friend to pull out the bullet for me later," He Juan let out a faint chuckle as he could already hear Doctor Jia’s furious holler beside his ears.

"By the way, you are wrong about one thing, M. I can tell that the sniper didn’t intend to shoot me. Their target was the children, or Little Miss Ye more specifically. Ah, speak of the devil..." he caught sight of Ye Qiu who appeared from the direction of the hallway and he offered her a warm smile, "Is Xiao Gu okay, Little Missy?"

"Yes, thank you so much. He’s doing very well now," Ye Qiu trained her gaze on the couch, unable to bring herself to look into He Juan’s eyes. The memory from the earlier incident was still fresh in her mind, leaving her shaken with shock and dread.

When they arrived at this house, half of He Juan’s clothes had been drenched with blood, so much that a mere glance was enough to send chills down her spine. Yet the man didn’t even bat an eyelid at all. He walked in as though nothing happened at all, sat down on the couch and waved at them while he took care of his wound, "It’s okay, go and do what you need to do."

Exactly how could someone remain unfazed under such a situation? Ye Qiu believed that there must be an unfathomable and terrifying personality hidden under that warm smile, and she couldn’t help but feel uneasy about it.

This man was dangerous, her Alpha warned. Yet this was also the same man who had taken them to a safe place at the risk of his own life.

It was only with that thought that she could bring herself to take a step forward to where the two superior Alpha were.

"Little Miss Ye, let me introduce you. This is M, the ally I have told you about. I know it’s hard for you to take in, but please believe me when I say that I can trust him with my life."

"Miss Ye Qiu, isn’t it?" Marius stood up with a perfectly measured smile on his face. He took the girl’s hand and brought it to his lips to plant a chaste kiss on the back of it. "Nice to meet you, my lady. Please feel free to call me M."

Ye Qiu felt goosebumps rising on her skin and she hurriedly yanked her hand back and scrambled backward a few meters for good measure. The gaze she directed toward Marius was like she was looking at a madman who did a striptease in front of her, and He Juan couldn’t help but burst into laughter upon seeing this scene.

"Pfft—ahaha!" He laughed so hard only to grimace in pain when the movement jostled his wound. Even then, his shoulders could not stop shaking. "Goodness, M, you should have seen her face!"

All this time, every woman Marius had treated with such a gentlemanly gesture would fall for him in a heartbeat, and this was the first time that someone had shown blatant disgust toward him, despite the fact that Ye Qiu was an underage Alpha.

Marius cleared his throat awkwardly, "Pardon me, it’s a force of habit. I don’t mean anything by that, Miss Ye, so you can stop looking at me like I’m a pervert."

Crimson flush dotted Ye Qiu’s pale cheeks as she quickly averted her gaze away. "I–I’m sorry...!"

"No, no it’s okay, please don’t apologize. Take a seat, Miss Ye," Marius politely gestured for the girl to take a seat, which Ye Qiu obliged after a moment of hesitance.

"You two... are you sure you want to help me?" Ye Qiu fiddled with her fingers restlessly. "Many forces are hunting us down, and being associated with us will bring you more harm than good. Even knowing the risk and danger, you still want to take our side?"

She had been struggling alone for so long that the sudden appearance of these two superior Alphas completely threw her off balance, especially when she found out how they were ready to offer their help without asking for anything in return. Could there be such a good thing in the world? Or was this a trap? Would something horrible happen once she agreed to it?

The more she thought about it, the more anxious she was.

"I understand your concerns," He Juan said helplessly. "But Little Missy, if I want to get rid of you, I would have done it ages ago instead of sitting here with you right now. I could have left you all alone under the mercy of that sniper, but I brought you into my house. Do you think it’s still not enough to show my sincerity?"

Ye Qiu pondered a little more about it, then nodded. "...You’re right."

"What XIU said is right," Marius added. From his pocket, he took out an exquisite token made of hardwood with a silk tassel hanging on it and placed it on the table in front of Ye Qiu. "But if you’re still doubtful, please accept this token from me. This is a symbol of authority that can only be issued by me. With this, you can go anywhere in Myanmar and Canada without fearing that anyone will harm you."

Ye Qiu’s eyes flew wide in shock. She did not expect that the sparkly and courteous man in front of her, who resembled a prince from a fairy tale, would turn out to wield such an extensive authority!

"N–No," she was quick to refuse, flustered. "It’s okay, I can’t accept such a precious thing!"

However, Marius insisted that she take it and Ye Qiu finally caved under the man’s insistence. She reluctantly put the token that felt like a burning potato into her pocket.

As she looked at the two superior Alphas in front of her, an unprecedented sense of wonder sprouted in her heart for the very first time. Both of them were men with great power and authority, yet they were starkly different than everyone she had ever met before.

Had God finally bestowed mercy upon them after the endless suffering they had gone through? Could they have found a sanctuary where they did not have to fear tomorrow?

The rims of Ye Qiu’s eyes reddened, but she gritted her teeth and desperately held back the urge to cry, and if the men noticed it, then they did not say anything at all. It took Ye Qiu a few moments to calm herself down, and when she raised her head, a brand new determination flashed through her eyes.

"If you have really made up your mind," she started in a hoarse, steely voice. "Then I will tell you everything I know... under one condition."
