Chapter 387: Forever An Angel

When He Juan took his hand back, Mu Yuze had no idea whether he should be relieved or disappointed to lose that tender warmth. However, he hurriedly caught himself as soon as the thought crossed his mind.

’Do not be greedy,’ he told himself severely. ’Do not harbor hope. He’s just treating you like usual, so why does your heart flutter so much?!’

"Have you eaten yet? Doctor Jia has given you medicine, right? Are you sure you are not feeling dizzy or nauseous? Remember not to keep it to yourself if you are uncomfortable, okay?" With every question He Juan asked, Mu Yuze either nodded or shook his head in response, not trusting that his voice wouldn’t betray the emotions he was feeling within. There was a slight pause before the man asked again, this time his tone a bit low, "I heard you got a concussion? Ha... those damn bastards."

He raised his head in shock for this was the first time he had heard He Juan curse, albeit it was muttered under his breath as if it had slipped off his mouth accidentally. His heart skipped a beat when he saw a mirthless smile on He Juan’s face, so different from the smile he showed Mu Yuze a few seconds ago. It gave him a cold and sinister air, yet at the same time also made him more... attractive.

Mu Yuze gulped. Snap out of it, you fool! Just what the hell are you thinking?!

He shook his head and asked in a tentative tone, "Those people... how are they?"

He Juan arched a perfect brow and a hint of amusement flashed through his silver eyes, "Xiao Ze, are you seriously asking me that question? I believe you can guess it yourself, no?"

Mu Yuze was rendered slightly speechless when he heard that. Of course, he could. Those people shouldn’t have gotten a good ending in He Juan’s hands. But more importantly, it shocked him how easily he had accepted this new side of He Juan – evil, ruthless, even a little cold-blooded – to the point where they could talk about it calmly as if discussing the weather.

He thought that he would feel a little fear and apprehensive at the very least, especially after the grotesque scene he had witnessed last night, but when he checked in on himself, he found none of the aforementioned emotions.

Was it because he was totally biased when it came to He Juan?

"Ah, I forgot to ask you," He Juan added, but then a slight hesitation showed on his face. Mu Yuze was wondering what could make the man pause so long when he heard He Juan ask, "About Kitty..."

Mu Yuze’s expression darkened in an instant.

He Juan observed him carefully as he asked, "I am wondering if you have seen who..."

"It’s Lao Liu," Mu Yuze gritted out, his hand gripping onto the blanket tightly. The rim of his eyes turned red, as the mere reminder of the orange tabby cat was enough to send a wave of fury and sorrow over his heart. "I saw it, he..." he choked on his words, throat constricted. "The man whose t–tongue you cut off... I saw him firing a shot at Kitty..."

He Juan made a small distressed noise on his throat, then he moved to sit on the bed and gently pulled Mu Yuze into his arms, letting the shaken boy lean on him.

"It’s okay," he murmured softly as he rubbed Mu Yuze’s trembling back in comfort. And though his voice was gentle, Mu Yuze could perceive the ice and steel in his tone that promised a nightmare to his enemies. "It’s okay, Xiao Ze. Gege will avenge her... Gege will definitely make that man regret. I’m sorry you have to witness that. It must be so horrible, huh?"

Mu Yuze nodded as he buried his face into He Juan’s chest, drawing comfort from the powerful arms around him. The man smelled of sweat, exhaust gas, tinged with a hint of bloodlust that seeped out of the pheromones. Yet for him right now, it was the best scent in the world.

See, he told himself. What did he have to be afraid of? He Juan might be a devil in the world’s eyes, but to Mu Yuze, he would forever be an angel.

Embarrassed at himself for sniffing the man like a pervert, Mu Yuze pulled away and murmured a question to mask his wild heartbeat, "And the kittens...?"

He Juan stood up to pour a glass of water and only after Mu Yuze drank it all did he reply with yet another news that struck Mu Yuze’s heart with sadness, "I’m sorry, Xiao Ze. I told my men to check on them after I found you, but one of them was already..." he lowered his gaze in remorse.

Mu Yuze couldn’t bear to see this kind of expression on He Juan and he scrambled to say, "I–It’s not your fault. You’ve had your fair share of things to worry about and also... the weather was so awful last night..." Those kittens were less than a month old – the period when they would need their mother the most. But last night, so many horrible things had happened one after another, and coupled with the harsh weather, the probability of them surviving was indeed a little... low.

It was not He Juan’s fault. If they had to blame someone, then they should blame Lao Liu for taking Kitty away from them.

He Juan shot him a small teasing smile. "Are you comforting Gege now?"

Mu Yuze cleared his throat and pretended to hear nothing, "Then how... how about the other four?"

"They’re fine," He Juan was quick to reassure him. "Actually, I’ve brought them here and left them in Doctor Jia’s office, so feel free to visit them anytime if you’re feeling better later. I’ve also buried Kitty together with her kitten. Gege will bring you to pay a visit after you’re discharged, okay?"

Mu Yuze nodded. He Juan had taken care of everything that he did not even need to move his arms and legs at all. This feeling of being able to share his burden and rely on another person was just so... addicting, he had to tell himself not to get carried away.

"That’s why," He Juan plucked the empty glass from his hand and pushed him to lie down on the bed, smiling. "The only thing you have to focus on right now is rest and recover soon, don’t you think so?"

But Mu Yuze had already slept for half a day. Adding on to He Juan’s presence in the room, he found himself wide awake without feeling the slightest bit of drowsiness.

He watched as He Juan straightened up, rolled up his sleeves and pulled the curtain so that the little light in the room diminished in an instant. The man then sat himself on the chair and took out his phone, presumably to take care of some work.

All the while, Mu Yuze watched, unable to tear his gaze away as if spellbound. He watched the glow of the screen fall on He Juan’s face and highlight his high cheekbones and silver eyes; he watched as strands of long hair slid down He Juan’s broad shoulders as he adjusted his position; he was still watching as the corner of He Juan’s lips hooked up into a smile.

"You’re going to tear a hole in my face if you keep this up, you know?"

Mu Yuze quickly whipped his gaze away, his entire body heating up like a furnace. Stupid! Of course, He Juan would notice it if he stared so hard! Mu Yuze had no idea what he was thinking when he did that. It must be the concussion that turned him foolish!

"What?" The man turned off his phone and shifted all of his attention on Mu Yuze, his eyes curving into a smile. "Do you have anything else to say, little bunny?"

Mu Yuze bit the inside of his cheek and used the pain to sober himself up. Think, think – he had to think of an excuse so that He Juan wouldn’t catch him staring for no reason at all! As Mu Yuze forced his brain to work, a question suddenly popped up in his mind and though he knew that it was not his place to ask, he couldn’t help but get curious. He took a peek at He Juan, hesitated for a while before he decided to bite the bullet,

"May I know why... you decided to become..."

"—a thug?" He Juan easily finished the sentence for him after seeing him struggling to find a suitable word.

Jia Molei had just finished doing his rounds as usual and was walking back to his office to get some rest. Rolling his sore shoulder, he pushed the door open only to halt in midair when he heard a cacophony of delicate cries coming from within.

"Miw miw miw miw..."

Four tiny kittens lay on an exquisite cat bed on his table, their limbs still shaky and weak as they cried out pitifully for their missing mother. The note on the bed said – ’Please take care of them for a while until I return. XIU :)’

"Fuck!" He let out a curse, veins popping on his forehead.

First, it was a brat and now kittens, had XIU taken this place as a daycare or something?!
