Chapter 382: Let Me Stay

Upon hearing that, all the words Mu Yuze had been prepared to say became stuck in his throat. His eyes snapped to the back of He Juan’s head, wide and bewildered like a deer caught in headlights.

He Juan told him to... leave? Did he, perhaps, not notice that the one who was standing behind him was Mu Yuze? Had he mistaken Mu Yuze for someone else?

That was the only reason Mu Yuze could think of as to why He Juan ordered him to leave. But the next second, he heard He Juan say again with nary a fluctuation in his tone, "Doctor Jia will take you back to his clinic. Stay there for a few days until you feel better and after that, I will arrange some people to help you move. That house is not safe anymore, and now that you have dropped out of school, it’s a good opportunity to start anew in another city. Don’t worry, I have been searching for a suitable teacher for you. I will let you know once I decide."

He Juan had spoken faster than usual, without a second of pause. It was as if he wanted to get the words off his chest and be done with it sooner. As if... he wanted to get rid of Mu Yuze, the sooner the better.

Mu Yuze parted his quivering lips, yet not even a word came out of his mouth. His fists were clenched by his side and a severe pain burst out from where his heart was, making his entire body tremble. And it felt a hundred– no, a thousand times worse than when he was kicked by Injured Man earlier.

He could feel the stinging burn on the back of his eyes from the tears that threatened to spill out, but he desperately tried not to let them fall.

He was no stranger to being rejected and unwanted. His birth father despised him, his peers shunned him, the strangers on the street cast him looks of disgust when they saw him digging through scraps. But why... when it came to He Juan, when it was He Juan who did not want him anymore, he’d feel so awful as if his heart would shrivel and die the very next second?

"Leave," He Juan said again, a hint of weariness and fatigue slipped into his voice this time. "It’s better if we don’t meet again, Mu Yuze."

Each merciless word the man uttered struck him like a poisonous arrow, eroding the tender flesh of his heart and turning it bloody. Unable to hold back anymore, a lone crystalline tear slid down his cheek. He whispered in pain, "Why..."

Why, he wanted to ask. Why would you want me to leave? Why are you speaking to me in such a distant tone? Why are you not looking at me? Why are you pushing me away? Why... do you not want me anymore?

Apparently, that one word was enough to stir the emotions He Juan had so badly tried to tamper down. And he broke down, just like a fragile dam under the force of mighty flood.

"Why?" He barked out a laugh, sharp and cold. He tightened his fist and the glass in his hand shattered to pieces; the sharp fragments fell to the ground while some were embedded into his flesh, dripping blood. "You’re asking me why... after everything you have gone through today? Haven’t you seen it yourself, the consequences of staying by my side? Haven’t you seen me—" he turned around sharply and the lightning flashed outside, giving Mu Yuze enough light to see the dried blood on He Juan’s face and clothes which he had not changed out from. He growled, as the thunder resonated with his rage and sorrow, "Haven’t you seen what kind of monster I am?!"

Mu Yuze stood frozen with widened eyes, his mind still reeling from the horror of He Juan gouging that man’s eyeball out before torturing him to near death. He could almost hear that man’s agonizing cries that grew fainter and fainter beside his ears...

Whatever He Juan saw in his face, it was enough to turn him ashen and he spun to face the window again. "LEAVE!" The windowsills seemed to shake and rattle along with the intensity of his voice. The line of his body was tense and blood kept pouring from the cuts on his palm.

Mu Yuze flinched in shock. He realized that he had made a mistake, an extremely grave mistake by letting the silence brew for a second too long. And now, He Juan had misunderstood him. He had no idea what He Juan had interpreted from his expression, but it was not what Mu Yuze wanted to tell him. At all.

"No..." a choked sob slipped off his trembling lips, his voice as small and weak as the whisper of the wind. "I won’t leave... I don’t want to..."

But He Juan did not give him a chance to say anymore. With brisk steps, he walked to the long mahogany table and grabbed the telephone, placing the handle beside his ear. He pressed on the speed dial and said to the person on the other side of the line, "I need you to come up here..."

Mu Yuze stared at him in utter dread and terror. It was happening. He Juan was really going to drive him away and make him leave. In that split second, his mind whitened out, ringing noises filled his ears and his body moved on instinct as his feet brought him forward and crashed onto He Juan’s back, holding him tight. He fisted on the man’s damp shirt so hard that his knuckles trembled.

"Ge..." he let his tears fall and seep into He Juan’s shirt. The words he had only dared to repeat in his mind again and again, to whisper in the silence of the night where he knew that nobody could hear him, now poured out of his mouth like a floodgate. Unstoppable. "Gege... Juan-gege... please..."

He Juan. It was this man’s name – the name which he claimed that only two people in the world knew. First, his little brother and second, Mu Yuze.

Mu Yuze had always cherished this knowledge, had always reveled in it like a child who took out his one and only favorite candy to play with, unwilling to open it and taste the sweetness for fear that it would be gone too soon.

But perhaps, this might be the only way to make He Juan listen.

"Don’t... Don’t send me away," he cried out softly, letting all of his fear, dread and grievance melt into tears that wet He Juan’s shirt. "I want to stay. Juan-gege, please... let me stay..."
