Chapter 139: I Messed Up

He Juan listlessly walked out of the police station, his gaze trained on the phone in his hand.

He had been circling through his list of contacts twice but the most reliable person he could find was still the one he did not want to contact the most. Even now, this person was still bombarding him with messages and the notification piled up on He Juan’s phone was already 99+.

He was simply speechless by Jia Molei’s tenacity. It was already close to midnight and he had not gone to sleep yet? Was it so fun to terrorize him with a bunch of threatening messages?!

The lonesome silhouette of Wu Yuan sitting inside the police car flashed through his mind. He Juan gritted his teeth, closed his eyes and finally pressed call. It was connected in the matter of milliseconds.

"You... motherfucker!!" Jia Molei’s roar echoed so loud that the officers bypassing He Juan were shocked. He Juan put on an apologetic look and hastily lowered the volume. He counted inside his heart. Ten, nine, eight, seven... four, three, two, one, before placing the phone to his ear again. As it turned out, Jia Molei was far from having enough. "You still know how to call me, huh?! I thought you’re so busy fucking your omega that you could only send me a goddamn period!"

Ah, that’s right...

Today was supposed to be the best day of his life. Just this morning, he had been so happy to fetch Mu Yuze from his house. Just a few hours ago... he had been so fascinated by Mu Yuze who curled up in his arms affectionately. Just how did such a perfect day turn into a horrible nightmare? A bitter laugh escaped from his throat, hollow and mirthless.

Jia Molei paused amidst his torrent of curses. "...What’s wrong? I heard commotion around you. Are you outside?"

"Molei..." He Juan halted in front of the busy police station’s lobby and stared at his shoes, his lips curling up into a self-deprecating smile. "Molei, I messed up again."

The other side was silent for a few seconds before asking hesitantly, "You messed up on your... date?"

"No." He Juan swallowed past the lump of his throat. He closed his eyes and fought against the burning sting on the back of his eyes. His voice became raspy. "I... I am in the police station now."

There was a loud clatter from Jia Molei’s line followed by a muffled curse, then a disbelieving shout, "Fuck, did you become a murder suspect again?!!"

He Juan could not help it. He burst out in laughter, his shoulders trembling faintly as he tried to muffle it so as to not enrage the other party. Just what kind of image did he have in Jia Molei’s eyes? Was it that easy to become a murder suspect twice in a row? Jia Molei was usually very brilliant yet sometimes, he could be very silly as well.

However, thanks to this little interruption, he found that he could breathe a little easier again.

"No, don’t worry, nothing happens to me this time." He Juan raised his head and saw a very tall and handsome man alighted from the car, carrying a lot of large plastic bags with the spicy crayfish logo. The traffic cop instantly went up to greet him and help him take a few.

He Juan’s mind became a bit distracted. Somehow, he felt like this man looked kinda... familiar, but he just could not remember where he had seen him before. He did not think too much about it though. Due to his terrible memory, he was used to forgetting the faces of people whom he had just met once or twice. Perhaps, he had seen this man in the police station and forgotten it. He quickly threw the matter to the back of his mind and focused on the call.

"Do you remember my student, Wu Yuan? Hmm, it’s the one I have told you before. Just now, he—"

A huge force suddenly grabbed his arm from behind, cutting He Juan mid-sentence with a gasp. His eyes flew wide when he saw Mu Yuze who was breathing heavily with a complexion so ghastly that it resembled a ghost. This was the first time He Juan had seen him in such a disheveled state. Before he could open his mouth to ask, Mu Yuze glanced past He Juan’s shoulders and his pupils abruptly shrunk.

With an urgency that gave no room for rebuttal, he hissed in a low voice, "Follow me!"

After that, he dragged... literally dragged He Juan into the bathroom stall beside the first floor lobby. Mu Yuze’s strength was unexpectedly so formidable that He Juan could not break free – not that he wanted to. Everything happened so suddenly that He Juan was not given any time to react. All the while, the phone was still held to his ear. Jia Molei was shouting something to his ear, but he could no longer register what the man was talking about.

They crammed into a single narrow cubicle. Mu Yuze slammed the door close, turned the lock and heaved a long sigh. And only then did He Juan realize that his whole body was trembling as if... as if he had encountered something extremely terrible.

Shocked, He Juan offhandedly said to the phone, "Sorry, I will call you back later."

"Fuck, wait, I will go—" Jia Molei’s voice was cut off as He Juan ended the call. When another call came in soon after, he immediately set his phone to silent and slipped it into his pocket.

Amidst the narrow space, only the sound of Mu Yuze’s ragged breathing could be heard. The cubicle was honestly too small for two grown men to squeeze inside together. There was hardly any space to move so He Juan had to press his back to the side wall so that he could peer over Mu Yuze’s face.

"Xiao Ze...?" He called out in a soft voice and gingerly reached out to touch Mu Yuze’s hand, finding it clammy with cold sweat. He Juan frowned and took Mu Yuze’s hands in his. At least, his palms were warm enough to dispel the slight tremble on his fingertips. He Juan had no idea what kind of thing Mu Yuze had just encountered, but judging from this excessive reaction, it should be quite severe. It made He Juan’s heart skip a few beats with unease. "Xiao Ze, talk to me, okay? Did something happen?"

Mu Yuze took a deep breath as though wanting to shove some emotions into the bottom of his chest, and his voice was extremely hoarse as he uttered, "Gege..."

He Juan became more worried. "What’s wrong? Where do you feel unwell?"

Mu Yuze’s lips parted, but before he could say anything, a series of footsteps approached them. Steady, calm and light. It showed the person’s innate steadiness and confidence. However, hearing that, Mu Yuze instantly went on great alert and covered He Juan’s mouth with his palm. He put his forefinger on his lips with a grave look on his face.

"Hello?" A pleasant, magnetic male voice echoed in the bathroom. "Is anyone there?"
