Chapter 38: Naya: Questions without answer.

I gasped as the connection broke.

Elon pulled me behind him, shielding me as another group of men rushed in with chains, weapons and strange glowing stones.

More shouts followed, but I was too disoriented to understand what was going on. All I heard was chanting in a strange language followed by flashes of white light.

The monster roared again, but this time it sounded pained.

I peeked around Elon’s shoulder just in time to see it being pulled down by ropes glowing with runes. It thrashed and twisted, its eyes burning as it was dragged away. Finally, the door slammed shut, and the room became silent again except for the pounding of my heart.

I slumped against the wall, shaking. My hands were numb, my throat was dry, and the metallic scent of blood lingered in the air.

Elon turned to his brothers. "Is everyone alright?" He asked.

"Yes, we’ll live," one of them muttered, setting the little children he was holding. I noticed all the men were shirtless, but for the situation on the ground, I would have taken a moment to check out their rippling muscles and toned abs.

Elon then nodded and turned to me. "Are you okay?"

I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out, only a whisper: "What was that?"

But before Elon could respond, Adam Ward came down the stairs holding a bloody finger, and his forehead was bruised too, with blood trickling down his face.

"Adam, are you alright?" Eleanor asked, rushing to him.

"I’m fine," Adam said, brushing past her. "It’s a minor scratch, and it’ll heal soon. Is everyone alright?"

"We’re fine, Father," one of Hansel’s brothers came forward. "Only we lost a Healer in the process. Is this why you asked us to come down here? To put our children and us in danger? If you knew it was going to be a problem, why did you keep it with normal people?"

"Fred, please," Elon sighed and went towards him. "You know this has never happened before. The full moon is in two days."

"Elon, shut up when I’m talking," Fred’s voice rose to a shout. "You want me to calm down? That thing just killed someone’s mate and father, and you want me to calm down? What are the laws binding this pack concerning taking the life of another pack member?"

"It wasn’t intentional," Adam said through gritted teeth. "You know the circumstances—"

"The circumstances don’t matter!" Fred spun around to face the rest of the family, most of whom were still huddled with the children, checking them for injuries. "We all saw what happened! That thing is out of control, and it’s getting worse every time. Imagine if it no longer waits until it’s full moon..."

"The Healers said it was a flare-up and he lost control..." Elon said in a small voice.

"That wasn’t a fucking flare-up! He had full control and, as always, decided to make everything about himself. I can’t believe he had to do that in front of our guest," someone else spat, glaring at me like it was my fault.

"Please, guys!" Elon sighed, raising his hands in peace, but at this point, no one seemed to be listening.

"You always defend him, Elon!" Fred snapped. "You’ve always been his lapdog, both you and Dad. What about the rest of us, huh? What about the family?! You saw how difficult it was to get these children to safety. He’s a monster."

"He’s not a monster!" Adam’s voice cut through Fred’s icy tone as father and son glared at each other. "He’s my son."

"Then keep your son away from the rest of us," another brother muttered darkly. "Look at what he did to you, Dad. Next time, he’ll kill you."

"Okay, that’s enough, Callum," Elon pointed at the last brother who just spoke, then went to stand between Fred and their father. "You’re frightening the children."

"For a good reason," Fred gestured wildly toward the door where the monster had been taken. "How long are we supposed to keep pretending that this is normal? Is keeping that thing around people safe?"

Another of the brothers spoke up. "Fred has a point. This is the twelfth incident this year, and it’s only getting more violent. We must protect ourselves and..."

"He’s not a thing!" Elon shook his head in exasperation. "Stop calling him that."

"Him?" Fred laughed bitterly. "You’re still calling it ’him’? That creature upstairs isn’t our brother anymore, Elon! It stopped being our brother the first time it tried to kill someone!"

"That’s not true," Adam protested. "You’re speaking out of fear and ignorance. All of you. This situation is temporary. The healers are working on—"

"The healers have been ’working on it’ for six years!" Fred shouted. "And it’s only gotten worse! When are you going to admit that there’s no fixing this? That he’s cursed and the only solution is to—"

"Don’t you dare finish that sentence," Adam fumed. "Don’t you dare suggest what I think you’re about to suggest."

"Someone has to say it!" Fred looked around at the other family members, seeking support. "We all know the truth, even if we’re too afraid to speak it out loud. That thing is dangerous. It’s a threat to everyone in this house and in this pack. Sooner or later, someone is going to die because we were too sentimental to do what needs to be done!"

"Get out," Adam yelled, spittle flying out of his mouth as he barked. "Get out of my house. Now."

"This isn’t just your house! This is the pack house! We all have a say—"

"And I am the Alpha of this pack!" Adam’s voice boomed through the room, making several of the children start crying again. "My word is law here. And I’m telling you to leave before I throw you out myself!"

Fred’s face went purple with rage. "You’re choosing that monster over us? "

"I’m choosing my son!" Adam roared. "And if you can’t understand that, then you’re not worthy to be part of this family!"

"But we are your sons too!" Callum cried out with a mocking tone. All nine of us, provided you don’t spring us with a surprise sibling by next week. We’re all your children and we came from your loins, why must that misfit get a better treatment? Oh!" Callum laughed cruelly. "Dad, it’s been twenty-seven years already, don’t tell me you’re still hung up about that Omega."

"I won’t stand here and have you insult me," Adam snapped. "I am your father and your Alpha."

"No!" Fred pushed Elon aside and closed the distance between him and Adam. "You’re an indisciplined man who has no scruples or thoughts for anyone but himself. Who’s still hung up on a 22-year-old slave and her monster son."

Thwack!

A slap from Adam landed on Fred’s cheek, imprinting his hand. Adam’s chest was heaving with agitation as he stared at his son.

"I loved that 22-year-old with everything in me, something you’d never understand. And why didn’t you turn out different, Fred?" Adam scoffed. "Don’t you have kids littered all over the place? Did I put your dick in all the women you fucked?"

"Adam, you slapped your firstborn." Eleanor, who had been observing everything quietly, suddenly walked up to him. "He’s the future of this pack."

"He’s NOT the future of my pack!" Adam turned back to his wife, a mocking glare in his eyes. "I am yet to choose a successor, but be assured, Eleanor, Fred would never become an Alpha of this pack."

"And you think I want anything to do with you and this fucking disgrace you call legacy. We all know you’ve always favoured the children killer..."

"ENOUGH!" Elon’s shout echoed through the entire room, making the words on Fred’s lips die off.

"Enough of this baseless argument! All of you, look around! Ms Rivers is here! A guest in our home! And you’re all shouting about things she doesn’t understand, revealing things that should stay private!"
