Captive Mate BL-Chapter 647: - - -
Jael cocked a brow before he could help himself, wondering if the gang boss had managed to trail him all the way here without him noticing.
"Lost?" It was more of a threat than a question.
"Yes!" Rae replied far too enthusiastically for the context.
Jael just slammed the door shut, only to open it a few minutes later because it was time to leave.
The sight of Rae still standing outside his door didn’t surprise him - whatever teen crush the gang boss had was bound to fade away pretty quickly.
He simply went off to find Asher, and he met up with his Mafia King in the hallway that led to the other’s bedroom.
Asher was ready to leave and seemed to have been coming to get him, so they just changed their trajectory, heading for the foyer.
"Is that kid always going to be with you?" Asher asked curiously, glancing at Rae, who was practically attached to Jael’s arm.
There was no judgment, just honest curiosity because this was the first time he had ever seen Jael let anyone get close. Even his relationship with Lucy hadn’t been this openly shown.
Jael followed his gaze, looking at the enamoured Alpha by his side like he had genuinely forgotten he was there. "No. He’s leaving tomorrow." He said flatly like the topic held no importance.
"Plan to stay till the end of the event?" He changed the conversation, refocusing his attention on Asher.
Asher made a face that showed his opinion, "I plan to leave as soon as I get the chance to."
"Fair enough," Jael agreed.
He actually missed the time they were nightdwellers, sleeping when the sun came up. It had been much easier to fall asleep when he was dead tired.
Now there was too much time on his hands, a shitty combination with everything that he had going on.
The club where the event was happening was in Central Area, 1st District. It was the perfect location for all the high-profile guests.
It was a high society club, and it looked the part, with perfect white gates so bright they seemed to glow from all the lights they reflected.
A chauffeur was right at the gates to park the car and lead them to the entrance.
Jael only planned to scan the interior and then remain on standby until Asher called for him. It was one of Asher’s clubs, so the men there already reported to him, he didn’t have to go through the trouble of stationing men.
Going into the club with Asher meant that he was dragged into a handful of conversations he would rather avoid.
"Didn’t think you would make it, Mafia King Asher," A man with a demeanor too severe for club settings was the first to stride up.
The middle-aged Alpha was an incredible estate attorney. He worked with most of the biggest names in Haines, and he didn’t hide that he was gunning for Jael’s position, confident that he would handle it better.
It was hilarious, so Asher paid him no mind. After all, Jael was everything but his estate attorney. The Beta was his guardian, bodyguard, emergency contact, everything else really.
Jael didn’t pay attention to the estate attorney, although he was blatantly throwing himself at Asher, trying to convince the Mafia King to hire him.
What the estate attorney didn’t know was that he would gladly hand over his job to anyone competent enough; the only hitch was that he had yet to find anyone qualified.
Looking after Asher was a full-time job, with no sick breaks and no vacations; he wouldn’t advise it.
Jael glanced around, expression hidden behind his dark shades. He noted a few people of consequence, making mental notes to put them under surveillance.
He endured the mindless chatter two more times before slipping away, Rae sticking closer than his shadow.
The group Asher had been talking to instantly noticed Jael’s absence, the silent Beta had as much influence as his Mafia King.
"Is that Jael’s little cousin?" One of the bejeweled and done-up Omegas in evening gowns spoke up behind a perfectly manicured hand.
Her gaze was sharp despite her harmless words, her devious calculations showing on her sharply beautiful face.
Asher looked over at her and shrugged. "Could be. You could ask him."
The Omega’s eyes gleamed at the chance. She could use Jael’s cousin to get closer to him, she would use every weapon in her arsenal; she wasn’t below seducing some teenager.
Asher swallowed back a smile at the trouble he had sent Jael’s way, settling in for the familiar night.
This club, filled with a mix of pheromones and expensive alcohol, where men in suits made dangerous deals while wearing charming smiles and drinking aged whisky, was a scene Asher knew well.
He was perfectly at home at the event, his mischievous nature shining unfettered. His wild hair was backlit by the dim lighting, making it look like glowing embers.

At the back of the club, Jael was doing a sweep of the club surroundings, Rae sticking to him like a duckling learning by watching a parent.
Jael had quickly learned to completely ignore the kid; he was responsible for the gang boss until he got rid of him, but that didn’t mean that he had to pay attention.
Rae was pretty smart, so the kid kept up without a single word from him, perfectly staying on the periphery.
The fact that he was quiet and listened to instructions meant that he was already a much better upgrade to look after than his boss.
The patrol was over in no time, leaving Jael with nothing to do as the men did everything else. So he drifted to the gazebos overlooking a backlit pool.
There were two women in one of the gazebos, no doubt coming out of the club to get some air.
Jael took the furthest gazebo from them; it looked like a giant, gilded bird cage. It caught the pool lights and the landscaping lights, making it a dazzling show.
